Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

if they could be 8 mins faster in the 80s, having only added GCD since then why are they so much slower now? It's the same all over the network...

I suspect the network is carrying far more trains and passengers now than it was in the 80s. That means more dwell time in stations, more clearance needed between trains and more conflicts at points. Heath and safety rules have changed a lot since then too. All of those will have an impact on speed and throughout.

Although they can't win really though can they with padding? On this thread you have people unhappy with too much padding and a few posts down in the forum there is one about DARTs always being late which indicates they don't have enough.

I travel DART to and from Greystones 5 days a week.
DARTs running late is not due to padding or lack of. I have given my opinion on this in the past and it was unpopular, I won't go there again. Some regular users will have seen the many inefficiencies.

but balance that with improved signalling and systems reducing the headway required. Newer stock with better acceleration and braking profiles, more carriages meaning more doors meaning more entry points for faster loading...

Doesnt change the core issue though: 4 lines, one chokepoint.

So DART drivers not happy about tea breaks then?

I'm sure the disruptive behaviour doesn't have the company or customer in mind!

The major problem with DART today is the now permeant TSRs in place on the route, 10 minute schedule could work more efficiently if speed restrictions were removed and those level crossings closed but they should start with the TSR.

One example the 10mph into 5/6/7 at Connolly causes trains to slow down much sooner than they should and holding up those departing Tara.

There's a bit more to this than "tea breaks" (we shall leave that argument to the LUAS drivers :)) and in fairness I would not call it disruptive behaviour either, there are two parties at play here and indications (from the WRC perspective anyway) is blame is not always one sided.

Yep. From what I heard they may be some merit in their grievance.

Heard from a good source that Drivers havent even been given so much as roster information as to whos working what when this kicks in and they havent even agreeed to all this yet. For such a significant change to things alot of grief is over the lack of information.

    They have been given rosters.
The “issues” have arisen after receipt of these rosters.

I know I previously said you have perfect hearing, but I can't say the same for your eyes WCH :)

Currently we have black smoke in Landsdowne Road and plenty of it, white smoke in time for Monday is looking increasingly unlikely.

Monday could be an interesting day...

I must say I haven't heard positive things about Monday. They may have to defer the timetable to prevent a dispute arising and a disruption to services.

Is this dispute possibly going to delay these timetable changes?

I'm highly biased on this given that I would have been losing my express trains from Portmarnock into Connolly... So I hope you're right

Talks are concluded, and there is mainly white smoke, 10 minute DART should commence Monday, but, it is possible there may be some industrial unrest.

All trains will run or no trains will run unless there is a sudden illness in driver grade.

Unions should be ensuring full compliance tomorrow.

Believe it or not they actually tried to, however the issue is with their members, not the union and it has caused severe division between drivers.

So I use the Dart every week day and there has been zero station information or publicity on this. Going to be a lot of confused commuters tomorrow.

It was displayed on the real time boards between the current train and station calls, the following two trains and all of the broken lifts from Rosslare to Dundalk.

    Surely that was enough, no?

While I would kind of agree, they really should have made some PA announcements, even if automated on repeat, especially Thurs, Friday and Sat.

I thought Maynooth lines were going to be increased, especially on weekends?

Still seem to be hourly services.

They have not tried hard enough! They were successful last year after the unofficial unrest.

Immediate dismissal from the union and IE actually taking legal action to recover financial loss, appears last years apparent action was quietly swept under the carpet?

I still think full service will run but we shall see.

They don't print out timetables anymore these days. You have to download the PDF off the website now for a timetable.

Right but what percentage of commuters are aware that there's a new timetable in place....particularly those who are about to experience a significant change such as entirely losing a commuter service at peak times.

You'll never get everyone no matter how much you try to be fair. Some people are idiot's unfortunately you can have a big sign up telling them about it and they don't even LOOK at the damn thing half the time such is their lack of awareness of their own surroundings.

Very significant onboard and in station announcements on the Maynooth line particularly in relation to specific trains with big time changes

Maynooth services are running to 4 today which means they're crossing all active paths. Really isn't gaining anything operationally

While everyone was looking at the new DART timetable last week; was that through the IE or TFI journey planner?

IE have the new timetable released in PDF format here if you haven't looked at it yet.

    http://www.irishrail.ie/media/dart__commuter_-_090918.pdf.pdf

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,671 ✭✭✭✭L1011

I used the IR journey planner as everything was point to point. It is useless for suburban transfers as it is based off protecting intercity revenue and hence gives huge transfer times - TFI planner is needed for those.

IR planner will make you leave Maynooth about a quarter of an hour earlier to get to Eastpoint for 0900 than the TFI planner due to padded connection time - the connection in this case being 6 to 7 and requiring seconds, not the 8 minutes or so IR expect

Malahide service is busy. I'm currently on the 8:16 from Clongriffin. But that's to do with colleges being back today. It was always going to be busier.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,059 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

No room from killester onwards on my 8.00 southbound DART, they only have to wait 10 mins now for the next dangerously overcrowded DART to arrive. My DART is running at least five minutes beind schedule due to combination of delayed commuter arriving at howth junction and people running up the platform trying to squash themselves onto a carriage

As easily predicted irishrail have made a complete disaster of this schedule

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,409 ✭✭✭✭gimli2112

Got down to the station at the normal time, next Dart 17 minutes away. It's a first world problem but a two track rail system isn't rocket science, is it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 69,671 ✭✭✭✭L1011

0545 Sligo hugely late without explanation, but due to the ridiculous recovery time it's not going to be much late to Conolly. Almost came in to Maynooth at its old time
