20 years is a ridiculous length of time for a county like Cork to go without winning a senior hurling All-Ireland. It's embarrassing in fact. But no excuses, we haven't been good enough to win it so it's nobody's fault but our own.

Of the hurling big three (KK,Tipp, Cork) it's the longest gap any of them have gone without winning it. 18 years is Tipp's longest stretch (1971 to 1989). KK are currently in their longest stretch (2015 to 2025). They also went ten years without winning it from 1947 to 1957.

It would be an unreal kick in the teeth to get beaten on Sunday but it could happen; Cork lost two AI finals in a row in 1982 and 1983.

I suppose Kilkenny and Tipp didn't have to go through something like we did with the strikes, especially that most recent one in 2008/2009. It left a horrible aftertaste that took at least a decade to fully get over imo.

What a load of nonsense,,no one is entitled to win an all Ireland and the rest of the country have an input,, there's been some very strong teams,, hopefully this time,it seems like our best chance pre match but....

I didn't say we were entitled to win an All-Ireland, in fact I said we had no excuse for not winning one for twenty years.

It " embarrassed" you,,I got the impression of entitlement from that, sorry if I picked it up wrong.

looking at those results between the 2 teams.. it will take a superhuman effort from Tipp to derail the cork train…

I'm always wary about that sort of talk when it comes from Kerry folk! Ye did it often enough to us in football the 2009 all Ireland final was the ultimate example of it along with Micko and his second best team in the country guff! There was a headline in the Examiner on the Friday before the game with a quote by Kieran Donaghy saying it's Corks to lose!🤣 Although fair play Kerry have won an all Ireland in hurling albeit all the way back in 1891. Of course i remember Kerry beating Waterford in the championship down in Walsh Park all those years ago as well.

Even on a week like this i still haven't forgotten about the pitiful shambles that is gaelic football in the county. 2012 was our last semi final appearance in that. Monaghan for example a county with such small playing resources in comparison to us, have been to the semi finals twice since then 2018 and 2023 and guess what they have a lot more recent exposure to division one football as well.

They did get promoted ahead of us in the league this year after all! For a county like Cork to only be in single digits in terms of senior all Irelands in football is embarrassing. Of course we've been unlucky at times as well 1988 and 1993 being two obvious examples there!

Anyone unable to make the match last minute, please keep me in mind. Looking for 2 for myself and son. Went to every single league and championship game

Mark o'shea that is playing midfield for Kerry footballers the last couple games.. his father sean o shea played with Kerry hurlers the day they beat Waterford in 1993..

Last year Cork may have been a little too confident... that won't be an issue this year... I was there in 2003 when a lucky lucky goal from Martin comerford was the difference.. I was there 12 months later when Cork made no mistake... I'm thinking Sunday will be the same. .

    Will Harnedy start?

They played Kerry in an all Ireland final once in either 1929 or 1930. They scored on the day a grand total of two points.🤣

I had two tickets but I am not going because I'd only go with my father but he can't go to matches anymore, he's too old now. I gave them to a genuine supporter. I'm not disappointed to be not going, I feel nervous about it anyway. I know it's only a game and if Cork don't win we will still get up for work Monday morning.

But it would be so upsetting to be beaten again. I don't want to dare to dream; does anyone else feel that way?

    No.

Im out of the country on hols and priced flights back for a day trip but they were outrageous!

If I was at home I would be going, if we lose, we lose. The whole point of sport is the engagement in the process where possible. There isn't really a better feeling than being there when Liam is won. Been there when we brought Sam back but Liam is a different story.

    Weather doesn't look great unfortunately.

Yeah it's been 20 years so I won't believe it til I see Downey with the cup. Followed them all year and got two tickets for me and the father for Sunday.

Build up has not been enjoyable, you'd be jealous of Limerick of the last few years who almost knew they'd win every final !

If Cork win on Sunday it will be some feeling for you and your dad. I was there with my dad in 2010 when the footballers' won Sam and it was some feeling.

It might be a bit early to say but my lot (Kilkenny) are looking down the barrel of a 20 year famine…bit of hope in that with Leinster being so awful we only have to get our **** together for two games, but without the quality it's not that easy.

So we should be hoping for the Cork famine to continue so we don't have the record in 11 years time.

In reality, I wouldn't begrudge either Cork or Tipp the win, but once the ball is thrown in I'll probably struggle to shout for Tipp…

The last time i felt this nervous about an all Ireland was in 2010. It's a weird mixture of confidence and nerves i'm feeling. Cork did come good despite the team being riddled with nerves that day. We were by far a better team than Down. We should have wiped the floor with them which we did when we played them a year later.

In last year's final we kept pucking the ball down on top of a dominant Clare half back line. Of course when we last won the all Ireland in hurling Galway were expecting us to play the short passing/possession game. We completely threw them off their game though by opting for a more direct style of play. We need to be smart enough to try a few short ones on Sunday if the long puckouts aren't working out.

As for the weather possibly being bad on Sunday i see that as a good omen for us.1999 and 2004 were two miserable days weather-wise but we still came up trumps on the day regardless. They were saying before that final in 1999 that Cork teams aren't capable of winning in the rain. I think nearly every pundit going beforehand predicted Kilkenny to win that final.

Every pundit is saying that the wet weather will suit Tipp more than Cork on Sunday!

    Pure magical thinking.

As if it never rains down here in Cork.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,286 ✭✭✭lukin

I seriously doubt that Kilkenny will go twenty years without winning an AI. I remember when Cork won it in 1999 we hadn't won it since 1990. We considered that a famine. But now we have gone over twice that length of time without winning it.

    it sucks big time

In fact Kerry won that hurling 12 years before they won their first football all Ireland!
