Great first half, full of intensity and fast moving hurling, some great goals too.

Great to see Cork stand up to Clare's physicality.

Was a lovely day for game.

Thought off the ball we were far more hungry and lively.

Players really looked up for it. Good to see.

    Good cork crowd too

We got a small measure of revenge for last July there, but Clare are obviously not taking the league seriously this year. I'm still delighted that we won and scored six goals in the process, but i expect Clare to be back in top form for the championship. Still though to come to Ennis and beat Clare by a margin like that, is a very satisfying days work indeed.

Ah come on now Brian get down off the soap box! Your team was on the end of several lucky refereeing calls in last years all Ireland

    https://www.irishexaminer.com/sport/gaa/arid-41590075.html

Clare manager Brian Lohan hit out at the manner of the officiating this weekend after his side had two players sent off in their heavy defeat against Cork.

It finished 0-23 to 6-20 in Ennis after a clash that saw 10 yellow cards and three reds. Peter Duggan was sent off for a tackle on Cork goalkeeper Brion Saunderson. David Fitzgerald and Cork’s Cormac O’Brien also received red cards before the final whistle.

"I think that game was refereed differently to anything we've seen so far,” said Lohan post-match. “The word I'm getting is that there was a big meeting with the referees during the week and they laid down the law, but nobody told us and nobody told the players. To get all this information second-hand or third-hand and have two players sent off as a result of it, it is just not good enough."

On Friday, the Irish Examiner reported that r eferees were told to “tighten up” on the rules. Lohan said referee Liam Gordon did not speak to him about stricter enforcement before the fixture. When asked if he warned his players, he pleaded for official communication.

"Of course, but if they're going to change the way the game is refereed, the least you could do is tell us. So, four red cards in Kilkenny, three here and one last night (Conor Cooney). OK, last night there was no debate, it should have been a red. But I don't know, I thought Peter's was a harmless tackle. I thought the goalkeeper kind of ducked his head to get around the tackle and it was harmless."

He continued: “It looks like the game was refereed completely differently to how the games have been refereed so far this year. A little bit of notice is, I think, what we deserve."

Meanwhile, Cork boss Pat Ryan said he sought out the referee before throw-in after hearing about the red cards in the earlier game.

“We heard about it [the red cards in Kilkenny-Tipperary] an hour before the game and I asked Liam about it,” he said.

“He said it would just be as normal. There’s a duty of care and I think that’s the way we should be going – there’s a duty of care on each player to look after it.

“But, look, it is a really fast game we’re playing and we don’t want to take the physicality out of it, but we don’t want anything malicious.

“There are incidents that happen that are malicious but there are also incidents that are just about players getting carried away with the passion that is in the game.”

The attendance was 11,410 for the contest. Ryan said the clash felt like a championship fixture.

“You are going to get those things and that is what we want. That is what hurling is all about.

“We just have to be careful because these are amateur players – when you’re sending them off, you have to make sure that you’re doing the right thing, because they have to go to work the next day. They’re not like Premiership footballers that can go away to Dubai for two weeks and enjoy their break.

“Our fellas are going back to work in the morning and we just have to be careful from a mental-health point of view, making sure that when fellas are sent off, it is the right thing to do.”

how did rob downey stay on the field? Fierce bad blood during the game

Clare tried to bully Cork physically on their home patch and it backfired spectacularly.

Cork stood up to them and they had no answer to Cork's power and pace

Cork effectively relegated Clare yesterday who were practically at full strength.

It's a bad sign when a manager like Lohan complains about refereeing decisions.

Of course it's early in the season but Cork will take massive confidence from this performance.

i can't cant believe he is blaming the referee in a game where his side concede 6 goals at home , I expect a much better challenge from us in 6 weeks time but Cork have improved on last year with the options of Mullins an ever improving brian hayes and O'Brien at wing back

i think lohans approach to the game yesterday was terrible putting in lads just recovering from injury that are no where near fully fit and leaving David Fitzgerald on for as long as he did before his completely stupid sending off , the pressure is all on him now and not Cork Easter Sunday

In regards to football i think we should bring in someone from outside the county, to just analyse and overview our entire football development structure from underage all the way up to senior level.

Let them decide on the new senior manager as well and if he's from outside Cork then so be it. I couldn't care less if he was from Kerry if it gets Cork football winning again.

U20 challenge also against Louth at beforehand at 12

personally i dont agree , there is 3 divisions of cork football at club level that is on par with most senior club championships across the country , its piecing the jigsaw that's the problem i feel

we got peter keane because there were a number of factors involved . eventually colm collins went down to kenmare to convince peter keane to take the job, it has not worked out as well as first thought either

cork need to do whats right for cork ,

not making excuses but , a lot of clare supporters are far from happy in how we approached the game last week

we needed to win yet lohan insisted on two training sessions that weekend , cork approached the game in the right direction knowing there was training week coming up after the game were lightly trained and full of beans

this is how davy fitz used to approach league games back in the day and it didn't work either , its lohan thats under pressure now to make sure it works in munster ….

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 131 ✭✭JoyceDavenport

So you're saying that Lohan deliberately got Clare effectively relegated to lull Cork into a false sense of security before the championship rematch?

I know Ger Loughnane did something similar in 1998 league semi final and it worked but that was a long time ago.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,452 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

yep , they trained saturday and sunday morning , i will go back to 2001 where there was no back door in hurling bar the munster final , we played the league final the week before we played tipperary in the first round of munster

we lost to tipperary in the league final and everyone thought thats fine dont give anything away for two weeks time , we didint , we thore into tipp and lost by a point , they won the league munster and all ireland that year something no clare player has done in there career but every clare supporter seems to think its ok

daly and fitz came after and done the same thing , there is a completely different mindset between clare and cork supporters, and everything is based on championship ,if we lose to ye at home on easter sunday we are seriously behind the 8 ball

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,452 ✭✭✭windy shepard henderson

sorry not we , but the management are behind the 8 ball in the county

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,296 ✭✭✭Straight Talker

Well we are the largest county in Ireland with the most clubs and we've only won seven football all Irelands in our history.

We've only won three senior all Irelands after 1973. We haven't won a league or Munster title since 2012 and it's been almost a decade since we last played in division one of the league.

If all the above are not compelling enough reasons, to open ourselves up to some new ideas from outside the county then what is?

U20 footballers beaten by Louth 5-14 to 0-12. Serious serious issues in Cork football

does that guarantee us Sam Maguire football this year?

I think it still depends on all the other results but we are looking good.

Thankfully we should avoid dropping down to division three now. Nice to get a bit of revenge on Louth for last years defeat to them in the championship as well.

Seems to be a problem in the young footballers production but none in our camogie teams.

A win today for Cork Camogie Minors and it means they now have a home semi final on April 12 or 13

    Cork 3:10 (19) Kilkenny 1:13 (16)

We also beat Kilkenny yesterday in the U16 camogie championship

    Cork 4:13 (25) Kilkenny 1:08 (11)

Shocking coverage of the footballers on the league Sunday programme. A total of 1 min and 20 seconds of the game shown.

They show 2 scores from Cork and 3 scores from Louth! Then they say Louth had some fine scores. I'm sure they did but Cork won by 8 points!

Really strange coverage. And games at least should get 5 mins of a round up in my view. Though I suppose they always fly through the non top division games.

So sad another member of the 1990 team has gone to his eternal reward. RIP Ger Fitzgerald. He of course was captain of the Cork team that won the 1992 Munster final as well.
