What in the absolute hell happened in this thread?

People defending loli stuff claiming it's just art? Alt Right comics?

    What the hell?

What, it's just someone defending provocative drawings of underage girls by posting a racist comic depicting child rape. What's so hard to understand about that?

I mean, I've seen some real Neckbeard style posts from that poster, but this one just takes the cake.

    great argument there rob.....

So FYI that's a joke based on the infamous (in FGC circles) thing that happened during an EVO Japan stream.

Basically 2 bubbly idols started groping each others boobs / spanking each others butts, which you can just chalk up to "Japan being Japan" I guess.

But EVO (Americans) cut off the stream immediately, then defended their actions as the girls' conduct was "incompatible with our core values".

So people gave them flack for being against sexuality (in any form) while turning a blind eye to Mortal Kombat's frankly sickening levels of violence.

Also what's with all the cries of "oh no this isn't video games!"?
Video game culture is a large part of "video games".
If it wasn't, we wouldn't have this gigantic thread.

Yeah the pass that Mortal Kombat gets is weird. It feels like that because it came from cartoony blurry digitised graphics with a few red pixels to what it is now, people just accept it's a game about pulling faces off realistic looking people.

I mean Jesus, people working on the game were diagnosed with PTSD - https://kotaku.com/id-have-these-extremely-graphic-dreams-what-its-like-t-1834611691

That's funny, was only watching some clips of MK11 yesterday, maybe it's cos there was a skin pack released. Had a look at the footage to see where it's all at.

Have neither played nor really thought about the series since the 16 bit era , having watched said footage ... ...

    Jesus Christ.

Look, it's clearly exaggerated and yes, fictional and I'm sure many can differentiate, but holy hell its vicious and extreme to a degree that does shock a little; it's hard not to imagine it's desensitizing people at a minimum. Could well believe developers had to have therapy afterwards.

I'd be slow to call it outrageous, but depraved? Lordy, maybe.

    Yuck TBH.

It's so bad, SugarPunch is completely sick of the studio.

Yeah the MK11 stuff makes me feel old tbh. Here I am playing super violent video games for years and years yet turns out there is still stuff that feels a bit too much.

I think it's the hyper real looking destruction of faces and skulls that does it. Maybe in 15 years it will all feel as quaint as the 16bit stuff does now...

At this point though, where else can game violence go? Seems like MK11 has hit the "high" watermark of just how detailed and exacting you can display graphic violence against the human body - X-rays n' all. Seems like at this stage the only place to go is to start openly breaking taboos.

It doesn't make me feel old, makes me feel like a certain innocence, even from those days of the original MK, has been irredeemably lost.

Is video game culture really a large part of video games? It wouldn't be for me. Beyond finding out about possible games I'd be interested in, I wouldn't normally engage in other aspects of gaming culture beside brief discussions on threads like this. The gaming humour thread frequently goes over my head unless I google whatever the image or meme is dealing with. I genuinely don't have the time or inclination to get sucked into the minutiae of what goes on in the world of gaming and only read about it if somebody decides it's important enough to mention it here.

Lollichan and the other tawdry aspects of anime and manga wouldn't be any part of any gaming I'd want to play - I'd actually have very little interest in 99% of Japanese games. Not dismissing them, just my personal preference. I'd be the same when it comes to something like heavy metal or fantasy novels.

First of all, it's "lolicon" (from Lolita Complex). So you can see it has its roots in something unsavory and not-Japanese.

Second, if you don't like Japanese manga art, heavy metal, or fantasy - that's like 1/3 of all games, right there.
Plus don't forget that many Japanese games were influenced by American culture (e.g. Dungeons & Dragons, Disney) so it's not like they came up with the concepts on their own.

Well you could have this level of fidelity, but in VR with realistic physics simulation.

I just get annoyed at ignorant dismissals of genres wholesale, carry on :)

I guess? Like, it's to the point where I'm now wondering if indeed games might have some negative psychological effect on people. Not all games obviously, but some specific cases like, yes, MK11.

I never would have thought I might type that, but that violence is kinda sick if I'm honest. Feel sorry for those devs having to work on that.

There's millions upon millions of albums, books and games out there and I'm starting to look at a more and more limited time to take everything in. I've enjoyed some fantasy books, heavy metal albums and Japanese rpgs and the like but there's a hell of a lot more I've found tedious and uninteresting. Unless something in those genres does something interesting enough to break out into the area of mass appeal, I'm not going to bother if I'm totally honest. Plenty of stuff out there in books, music, films and games in the areas that I'm interested in to keep me entertained.

Yeah I'm not sure why people are trying to align underage cartoon porn with all this other stuff.

The people here aren't the people over at EVO and it's possible to think there's problems with the stuff in Peacewalker and MK11 at the same time while recognise that the two are completely separate issues.

tbh some of the posts ITT are like

Not sure that's right. "lolicon" is in a Japanese term AFAIK. I've never seen it used to mean anything other than Japanese or Japanese-inspired content. It's often used in anime and games as a way to cause misunderstandings for comedic appeal if they're into youthful or petite types. 小児性愛者 is the more serious word for pedo. Never/heard seen that in a game.

I'm sure that nonsense means something on the Gamergate forums, but all I can see is some dudes with facial hair and maybe....Will Wheaton?

One pic is Sean Murray from Hello Games when they took a pic of No Man's Sky going gold.

So I guess that means it's okay to post a purposefully racist comic which depicts a child being raped.

Does being 2 years behind the curve count? Cos I'm only just playing Breath of the Wild now :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 91 ✭✭GhostofKNugget

Started trying to play the Wolfenstein in single player mode and it is absolute scutter. It probably suffered doubly from me just finishing off Control which I thought was brilliant. Trying to get into Vampyr but I'm not feeling all that compelled to play it at the moment either. The daughter got a Switch for Christmas and she's just finished Breath of the Wild so I might give that a spin shortly.

Breath of the Wild is the curve that everything else is behind :)

The Japanese term is derived from the novel Lolita.

Really enjoying it. Early in the game but kinda stopped playing when theres a lot of horseback action involved. After Red Dead 2 its a little too much. Will get back into it over the weekend.
