Just had my first proper look at a possible team and I'm already going round the twist!

Thought I'd throw this up here to see what people thing, even if I'm not sure I'm happy with it myself. I have set the team up with heavy emphasis on the first 3-6 weeks as I will have used my WC by GW6 at the latest.

De Gea (5.5): Man U will have a tight defence and, coupled with their opening fixtures, defensive cover is needed. I'm unsure who the back 4 will be, so I'm going safe and picking De Gea
Elliott (4.0): Won't play with De Gea in my team but may as well have a playing 4.0 just in case.

Trippier (5.5): Spurs will be strong defensively and Trippier has a great cross on him so there is the potential for assists.
Dawson (5.0): Excellent opening fixtures if Pulisball kicks back in. Also a threat from corners
Alexander-Arnold (4.5): Should play with Clyne out, great going forward. There is a fear of the Liverpool defence not being completely solid, but for his price I think hes worth the risk
Dunk (4.5): I think Brighton will be tight defensively. Hes a guaranteed starter with good fixtures from GW3 (when TAAs turn)
Gamez (4.0): Bench fodder who may start with Yedlin injured. Low ownership so hopefully won't lose value

Alli (9.5): Spurs cover. Toss up between him and Eriksen
Salah (9.0): Liverpool will score goals. Toss up again between him and Coutinho
Fabregas (7.0): Assist machine for the champions. I see many going for Willian, but I'm leaning towards Fab.
Ramsey (7.0): Arsenal usually start slow, but I think the game on Sunday will help them. Ramsey has more freedom since Arsenal went to 3 at the back.
Carroll (4.5): Will only be used in emergencies. Guaranteed starter, who may have dead ball duties.

Lukaku (11.5): I'm not convinced Man U will pile up the goals, but fixtures and ownership levels mean I'm going with big Rom.
Jesus (10.5): City attacking coverage. Who knows if its the right one! His ability to play wide makes me think his game time is more secure than some others.
Benteke (8.0): Guaranteed starter, good fixtures, regular (enough!) goalscorer. Also I'm not confident in any one below this value (Austin, Gayle etc)

I do think KDB and Kane is a better combination than Alli and Jesus, but that 2.5m gives me Ramsey and Benteke instead of (say) Walters and Austin.

    All criticisms gladly accepted!
All looks well thought out, I'm not sold on Ramsey/Fabregas myself, hoping the game Sunday gives us a better idea. Both could be dropped IMO.

looking like this. one or two positions are changeable depending a number of things - transfers, etc

You've a few punts in there, too many players new to their teams or new to the league for my liking. Like the Loftus Cheek/Ince combo though - every year there's some midfield enabler that hits the ground running. Good chance it'll be one of them with the fixtures they start with

    Any advice folks
    De Gea (Elliot)
    Dawson Dann Yoshida (Rangel Humimier)
    KDB Ali Coutinhio William (Carroll)
    Morata Lukaku J Rod

I'm happy enough that said I keep changing the team. But I keep coming back to this line-up.
Morata does concern me and ideally I'd love to get Agero in but he's 1.5m extra.
Is it better to have 5 very good midfielders and downgrade a forward.(Carroll to say Chadli, by sacrificing JRod to 4.5m fodder)

Am I the only person going in with a 5 man premium defence?

Very happy with my team, for the first time- very strong first 10 (but no spurs)
Will WC after 6/7 weeks as usual,

    Foster
    Danillo Trippier Valencia
    KDB Salah William Zaha
    Lukaku Jesus Rodriguez

    Elliot Carrol Hagazi Smith

May drop Rodriguez for a 4.5m and upgrade hagazi to a 6m def:confused: other than that can't see any changes?

I'd imagine one of few. Too many big hitters further up the field that will hurt you imo.

But I have Aguero Jesus Coutinho & Salah along with Fabregas. I think it's better to go with 2 premium defenders over a 6m mid plus forward. The likes of Zaha, Chadli, Austin wouldn't have a better Pts per game than say Alonso, Milner etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,083 ✭✭✭Chesty08

To revert to my usually 3-4-3 I'd be transferring

    Alonso to Lukaku
    Valencia to Gray (6.5mil forward)
    Milner to Trent Alexander
    Jesus to KDB
    Fabregas to Townsend (6mil mid)

4.5mil mid & attacker To bench fodder defenders (4mil)

When I look it those things considered and the open mind to WC early and I am definitely going in with my 5-3-2 formation... could go 5-4-1 and replace KDB over Jesus/Aguero?

With the '3-5-2 wing-back system' all the rage now for PL managers, I think premium defenders have become a lot more appealing. Out of the bigger clubs, City, Spurs, Arsenal, Chelsea and, possibly, United all look to be putting more focus on this system. I don't think Liverpool are deploying this system, but Milner's penalty and set-piece appeal is certainly there.

There's definitely more to be said this season than previous years in investing in wing-backs for better returns than mid-range midfielders.

That said, going too strong on premium WBs is a bit of a punt, especially if it means sacrificing a popular choice like KdB/Kane.

I've set up my own team, but then had a look over the previous pages for more ideas and I've come up with the following team :

Foster - I'd prefer to go for Begovic/Boruc for Bournemouth but I'm not sure who'll actually nail down the starting position between the two of them.
Butland - 5m is cheap, and I reckon it's because he was injured for pretty much all of last season.

Bailly - Solid, and Utd obviously don't concede many goals. Would Vertonghen or Alderweireld be a better bet though? I do already have Trippier though. David Luiz could also slot in here but I'm not sure how reliable he is disciplinary wise. He seems better now as of last season but this is David Luiz we're talking about!

Trippier - Convinced after reading back on this thread. :pac: :) Might get the bullet though if I choose one of the other two Spurs lads ahead of Bailly. But who to replace him? Perhaps McAuley for West Brom is always a good shout but I already have Foster in goal, and McAuley himself has only 50% chance of playing.

Daniels - Did well last season and still only 5m.

TAA - For reasons mentioned over the last few pages of this thread.

Ben Mee - 4.5m for a relatively consistent performer. Will probably spent most of the time on the bench anyway! :pac:

Dele Alli - One of my four big hitters.

Mo Salah - The second of my big hitters. I'm still unsure though. Should I try to save money here and put more into the forwards or upgrade one of the other three midfielders?

Loftus Cheek - Good and cheap, with the potential to do quite well I hope. Another idea I stole from the last few pages! :pac:

Ryan Fraser - He'll play anyway and may chip in with a few goals and assists. 5.5m may be a tad expensive for him though.

Solly March - Has seemed to have a decent pre-season (at least he scored to goals against my own Southend!) so one of those I feel is worth a punt at 5m. Maybe not after though!

Kane - I want Kane in my team, especially after he pretty much single-handedly earned me €50 last season! :D

Lukaku - Already a proven PL goalscorer (obviously), but I think he will flourish under Mourinho. Probably won't work as hard as Drogba used to though so it also has the potential to go a bit sour! :pac:

Chicharito - Always liked him. Plus, West Ham are off to Old Trafford first game of the season where Javier is just bound to score!! You can see it happening like! :pac: :pac:

Out of that team, the subs will most likely be March, Brady, and Mee, in that order. The two keepers are fairly interchangeable.

I also still have a half a mill

Backed away from the big front 3. Also afraid Pogba might burn me if I go without. Jones is probably worth the punt at his price.

    Foster
    Trippier Jones Cedric
    KDB Pogba Willian Fraser
    Kane Lukaku Benteke

    Elliot Mee Lowe Carroll

I don't understand the logic of it at all.

For one, you'll be watching football every week hoping for clean sheets - that just sounds miserable.

Secondly, the maths don't work for me. There were only 3 defenders scoring over 142 points last year (all Chelsea). There were 18 midfielders and 7 strikers who managed it.

Also, captaining defenders seems a miserable strategy.

Lots of money on keepers there, Foster would rotate better with Heaton if you are going down that route, defence looks ok apart from Daniels who is not guaranteed to start. Chicarito might be slow of the mark after the confederations Cup.

Any suggestions on how I could get some Chelsea defense into this team?

If you take Milners returns last season into account and calculate it as defender the returns are much higher.

City we're all over the place defensively (wing backs) and they have solid options now. Pep's 2nd year makes them very appealing

It is not a long term strategy and I will be deploying a 6 or 7 man attack force around Xmas.

    Hi,
I would be grateful for opinions on this please:
    529156f29ddf3b00a9c382d4796979d6.png
Goalies: Foster will play every week, Elliot is just bench-fodder but it seems like he is the only 4m goalie that has any chance of getting a game.

Backs: Will be playing four at the back. Bailly, Cahill and Trippier. Bailly and Cahill I'm happy enough with, but Trippier I'm not - going by Spurs efforts at Wembley last season in CL and Walker's departure to City I'm not sure how many clean sheets they can get this time around. But I'm thinking just in case they do good I'm better have some sort of Spurs defence and I'm not sure who else from another team would be a good replacement for him. As for Dawson and Mee, I believe Burnley and WBA rotate fixtures, so the home guy will play every week. If there are better options out there I'd like to know. I am somewhat concerned about Dawson as I have Foster in goal and maybe two Baggies in defence is too much considering they kept so few clean sheets last year.

Midfield: Again will be playing four in the middle. Thinking Pogba/KDB/Williams will be the stalwarts and will rotate between Cook and Milivojevic. Here I'm not sure how much game time Williams will get and Im also thinking Milivojevic might push Loftus-Cheek to the bench. I watched Cook during the summer and liked him, not sure if he will actually get a game but I think he has a great chance to break into the team so I thought its worth the risk for a cheap midfielder.

Forwards - Will be playing 2 up front, Lukaku and Aguero. Abraham is a cheap forward and I don't know who else might get a game in that sort of price bracket. I know a lot of people are going for Jesus but I figure if Jesus' hits the ground running rather than Aguero it will be easier to switch Aguero to Jesus rather than Jesus to Aguero. I've decided not to go for Kane for the time-being because like what I said about Tripper earlier, I'm really not sure how Spurs will perform at Wembley.

    Thanks

i had eliot for a while too but got rid. he'll play a week or two at most. you really don't want to be wasting a precious transfer on a goalie early doors and you really should have two rotatable goalies depending on fixtures unless you're going with a 5m + one all season.

rest of the team looks solid. i would take luiz at 6m instead of cahill and save .5 m.

IT'S VERY LOUD FOR A START!

After that, I'd worry over Mkhi (doinv well in preseason but with Matic there now I wouldnt be at all sure of his place being regular), relying solely on Elliot, and Gayle.

Curious as to your thought process on this one.

No need for three Utd attackers - downgrade MK and upgrade Gayle, Federici, Long, Quaner and Rangel - one 4 million player is more than enough.

Maybe downgrade Alonso to Luiz to free up another 1 million.

You need to get at least one Saints player in there, maybe even two with their fixtures.

I like Danilo myself, is he first choice?

    The rest I like.

After all my talk I may end up chancing jones if trippier is out for a few weeks
Will switch to Forster in goals then and switch trippier to kompany or the new Arsenal LB possibly
Kompany and jones is probably asking for injury trouble though so probably won't :D

Bound to change lots but heres the current draft

    Foster - Elliot
    Alonso - Danillo - Mee - Rangel - Hunemeier
    KDB - Ramsey - Carroll - Richie - RLC
    Lukaku - Kane - Jesus

Huge frontline obviously but thats where I see the scoring over Alli, Sanchez, Hazard, Coutinho etc

Trips to Stoke, Pool and Chelsea in the first 6 put me off Kolasinac. He has nice home fixtures in between though.

So, quick one........Defoe or Benteke (both 8m)?

Have Chicharito in there at the moment but have freed up a million elsewhere. Well, half a million as I already had another half in the bank! :pac:

I'm thinking Benteke, but that's probably just because I saw that he scored again yesterday. :pac:

Benteke imo, HUD/liv/SWA/bur, by then we should know more about Chicarito whose games from GW3 - GW13 are not too bad(SPURS/LIV in there).

Okay, so I downgraded Luiz for Bertrand to save another 0.5m, and then went for Firmino instead.

Cheers! I decided to go for a different tactic though with Bertand instead of Luiz so I could get Firmino instead.

It's looking a but too Liverpool now though with TAA, Salah, and Firmino.
