Both McIlroy and rahm need at least a 66 today to get back in contention.

Rahm was obviously listening to me, 4 under thru 5

Rory cannot buy a putt to save his life, they all look like they're missing

Finally got the rain, it wouldn't be an Irish open without it.

    Ocean mist or proper rain?

Delighted for Thornton to make the cut, not best rd3 for him but still a few holes left to get back to even on the day.

I think it's accurate to echo a few of the posts here about McIlroy pretty much saving this tournament status on the European tour with his involvement.
He attracted the sponsorship and crowds back.
18k yesterday was a big crowd.

Heading to Ballyliffen tomorrow (today if we are being correct I suppose). Can I bring a camera with me or will I be stopped going in?

I think cameras are now allowed on the European Tour. So long as they are set on silent (digital obvs.).

Very interested to see how Van Rooyen gets on today, to be honest I know next to nothing about him.

It's cloudy and overcast today here so far.
Hopefully the sun can break through later.

Turning into a great final day with the wind finally picking up.

Some round for Rahm with a triple bogey on his 2nd hole of the day

    great event

but even thread here lacks a bit of enthusiasm

There just isn't enough Irish interest or top players in field.

Rahm only golfer of real interest for me and I'm a golf fan..

If the event is great, does it matter about lack of enthusiasm on an internet forum?

Was only able to follow scores/videos online, but looked like good crowds. Haven't heard about the organisation, so I hope that went well. Players seemed to enjoy the course, great boon for the area to have such an event there!

By far the easiest golf event I've ever been to getting into and out of the place. Car park a 2 minute walk from tented village and another 3 minutes from there to the first tee. With 23k there yesterday I queued less that 2 minutes to exit the carpark.

...We're heading to a play-off, just a question of 2 or 3 players- likely just the two...

Only indication of lack of interest in European tour.

So it kind of does matter .

Yes good local event crowds look only ok would be 4/5 deep near Dublin.

It is a poor field of players .

Its in a bad spot on the rota this year given where the Ryder cup is on where the French open was played, imo

The field was poor enough in French too .

It is more a European Tour problem.

Irish Open near top of second division golf.

    Watching this with no sound.

Anyone know what the playoff format is?

It's the Irish Open, not the Dublin open.

There were 75k people there over the 4 days when Rory won at the K Club, local hero at a venue near Dublin.

If they get 20k today (pretty likely given there were 23k yesterday) the attendance this year will be higher, with no Irish remotely in contention at any point except after day 1. So your point about the crowds is completely wrong.

Sure the European Tour thread here is much quieter than it's American counterpart. Not helped by it being on during day and so people don't see as much, as well as the players staying over there.

It may be required to stretch out the rolex series events, it's now 3 In a row then the Open. Lot of players won't do 4 on the trot. Not even many Americans came to French open and it's on the Ryder cup course.

95,000 here for the week according to the tour.

The K club isn't in Dublin and the weather was ****e.

I'm a fan of it being spread around.

It is grand event , but I wouldn't buy into the hype.

poor field and I know with a better located event you would get bigger crowds .

I'm watching 18th hole there and people sitting on ground .

I've been at events you couldn't walk.

It makes it a better event to go watch .

Irish Open hasn't been in Dublin in 15 years.

We have had a grand tour now.
    I enjoyed it myself.

Bring it back as a test and we will see how the crowds and field improve ;)

Hope Rory was watching that one.

Would ever go lock yourself away in a dark room. You most be the most negative person on this forum for someone who calls himself a golf fan.

Not one positive thing to say about thit event all week.

Anyway, what a finish from Russell Knox. Puts him into Ryder cup reckoning too.

What a finish all the same
