Am I right in thinking that, with most basic AOSP-based boxes, Netflix only streams SD?

You'll get HD alright, no 4K though. The same with YouTube
Perfect player I find vv good

Every service that depends on cloud service is in geopardy. Afair Plex is using central forwarding and authentication.

For small numbers I’m sure you will be fine
It’s the big players they have been targeting and closing accounts

I’ve seen threads shut down when discussing means to..eh...share content. Just don’t want this thread shut down.

You are allowed to share content with a few mates otherwise they wouldn’t have an invite to share your media system in place
Most of my mates are tight **** so I don’t share with them lol

So, without reading back 17 pages, any essential apps bar RetroX and Kodi?

Also, I've no spare Ethernet cable but I've one running under the floor beside where the Shield is to a Vodafone TV box.

So what do people think is best: a homeplug (already have a TP-Link one spare) or maybe a cheap network switch which will take the CAT6 cable going to VF box as source and split it between the Shield and VF box?

Isn't Plex on it out-of-the-box - thought I saw it in the menu. Need to look into it a bit as don't know a massive amount about it.

Yeah, I'm investigating VPN options at the minute though battling a Paypal dispute with StackSocial over dodgy VPN offerings.

I know you don't like Kodi but am wondering if STB Emu has many advantages over the SimpleIPTVClient in Kodi? I'll look into it.

Not heard of Emby so I'll look into that.

emby is much the same as plex but i switched
stb emu is perfect for my the channel switch is instant and tv guide works a treat, never tried the kodi version
getflix is the best smart dns to use from my experience

Yeah, of course it is. Update to the latest though. The Shield server is meant to be pretty good, but I run it on a separate server.

Getflix is a DNS service, not VPN. It spoofs your IP to the service so it thinks you’re in a different location. It doesn’t have encryption of the data, but it also doesn’t have an impact on speeds.

Getflix does provide DNS service, but also VPN services.

I'd go with a router or hub. Much faster than a homeplug if you have the wire there.

Any old router will do, so if you have one from a previous supplier you can use that.

A network switch is what they need, they're about 15 quid.

Using an old router is bad advise as it would break their network if they didn't adapt it to suit by disabling lots of stuff.

But it costs €0, compared to €15... ;)

I'm wondering how a switch will perform though as the VF TV box is constantly pushing data 24/7 for TV so I'd imagine the switch will struggle with getting packets to the Shield. Still, it's a cheap way to find out.

I find Homeplugs fine but after a few weeks, they heat up and start to underperform.. typically switching them off overnight / for a few hours resolves it but not ideal obviously.

Get a gigabit switch, it'll be fine, IPTV is only about 8 Mbit

    I use 3 shields, 1 hardwired, 1 via homeplugs and 1 via 5Ghz WiFi.
To be completely honest the 5Ghz WiFi seems more stable to me than the Homeplugs.
The Shield's WiFi performance is top notch and unless using 500mb plus Homeplugs I'd stick to WiFi.
