Absolute steal, and cheaper than black friday. Anyone in doubt i'd advise getting it at this price.

I'd tempted to pull trigger but few questions..

Can you play Nvidia games on this (not streaming as only have a basic Macbook Air)? Will it work well enough over WiFi? How much will gaming cost - is it a monthly sub?

Geforce now? Yes, I'm watching my son play it right now. It's €9.99 a month, some games are free, some have to be bought - you only have access as long as you subscribe.
I'm sure it's fine on good WiFi, but I haven't tested it.

If you get a shield then hard wire it even if you have to get homeplugs
Keep WiFi for things that move around the house if you can

I agree. My WiFi is faster than the home plugs but the shield can use so much bandwidth that it slows everything else down on WiFi. Much better to have a dedicated circuit for it.

Had a few spare vouchers so got it for £145.

Thanks for the heads-up on this all.. actually had a CCC set up for it which didn't fire!

Actually have spare set of home plugs too so works out well.

It’s a great piece of kit Basq and very well supported by Nvidia!

The 16gb space is a bit of a let down imo. The minimum space I'd go on Android these days is 32gb.
Sure you can move some apps to the SD card but it's only a limited amount of apps that support it.

Must be a great and speedy as a media centre though.

The codec support is what makes it such a good media player. I’m tempted to pick up a second one at that price.

Where is the best place to buy one of these?
I see a few second hand on ebay, is there much difference in 2017 version?

Amazon. The new one is much smaller and has a better controller with a mic

What can these do differently then your standard Apple TV / cheaper android box? I get they are high spec but even cheap 4k android boxes perform well.
What they can do is not leave u down

Plus they are supported (in contrast to cheap android boxes, but cheap buy twice)

Cheap boxes run a hacked version of Android from a touchscreen tablet, not designed from the ground up to be used with a remote on a TV screen like Android TV. The Shield will get it's update to Android Oreo soon, Nvidia have said they'll release it when the apps have better Oreo support. Most cheap boxes never get a single update or bug fix

Am I right in thinking that, with most basic AOSP-based boxes, Netflix only streams SD?

You'll get HD alright, no 4K though. The same with YouTube

Does plex play all the same types of movies as kodi? New releases etc? I use kodi but find it cumbersome at times. It's an older version also I think.

If you download them it plays them. It does not stream directly from online streams. There used to be an add on for it but not seen it in ages.

    Depends how you use plex

Not for long it looks like. Plex are cracking down on pay-for-shares now and a lot of servers are moving to Emby, which I don't like nearly as much. The filtering is crap.

Quality wise, Emby is not even at 30% of Plex...

Emby isn’t bad it’s early days for him and the library is improving slowly
