And people say cyclists don't pay road tax, when in fact they are the ONLY group that are asked to .

55 euro for 100km a bike ride with no charity element....

I guess you're basically paying for your jersey, medal and food stops.. Also maybe there's some money taken out for the marshalls etc...

:ermm: Got an email and a text this morning. There's an early bird reduction for Cycling Ireland members. Reduced to €45 for the 100K till midnight May 29th AFAIK. Had no problems signing up.

think i've sussed out the registration issue now ... when you enter your address and it asks you to select Country .. dont scroll down the list and select Ireland ... select Ireland at the very top of the list (this will then open up your county to be selected)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 315 ✭✭strmin

I see limit of riders increased to 7000 and also price increase. Last year it was overcrowded, this year will be impossible. I will definitely skip this one.

How can a "Mass participation event" be overcrowded?

I was selecting Ireland at the top first. So I selected the one below first and hit checkout, got an error and selected the one at the top. Voila. Registered.

Last year's was a good few hours in the saddle. Pretty much most of it was closed roads and the weather was good too, though it's a few weeks later this year round. I didn't stop at the food stops so can't comment on them. Not sure the jersey is on offer this year, looks like a "Great Dublin Bike Ride top"...whatever the hell that means. At full price €55 and what looks like no jersey, it's a little steep but tis rare you'd get access to closed roads in Dublin.

    It was hardly overcrowded?

What part felt overcrowded to you out of interest?

the first food stop was in Ballyboughal, which IMO was a bit early. there were plenty of volunteers and no shortage of food and water etc. IMO the problem was the layout. With these large events, a "one way system" is better and marshals "encouraging" people to keep moving really helps. Its natural that people tend to congregate around the food tables and make it more difficult for others to get to the tables. This adds to the delays.

oh and i also think that a lot of people feel they've paid for this so they are determined to get that sandwich! (why they don't just skip the first food stop and move onto the next one amazes me)

I've tried to register and have failed.
It either says "registration details later" or when I go another way, and click on "register", nothing happens.
    Can anybody assist ?
    Thanks.

After the ride last year, I was speaking to the chairman of a cycling club. He told me that his club got €1,000 for providing a number of marshals for the event. I know that a number of GAA clubs got the same deal.

I'm registering at the moment and it's quoting me an additional €39.95 for the jersey. Yer grand thanks.

On the plus side, you can get your number posted out this year in advance, for a fiver

Did it last year, said I would do it again this year with my brother in law. I might call it quits after that, it should be a perfect way to get more people cycling with the chance of doing it on closed roads. Hopefully it doesn't go down the Ring of Kerry pricing route.

I got a free jersey last year - do they usually do that or was it a once off?

They gave a free jersey to the first 3,000 people to register.
Seems not to be the case this year.

They gave a tshirt then to everyone else after those 3000. Top quality tshirt too.
I would be of the opinion that's it better not to get them though, and keep the entry cost down.
Anyway, fingers crossed for decent weather, good last year from what I remember with a strong headwind at times.

Don't the first x number of registrations get a free jersey? Or was that just the first year?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 694 ✭✭✭brianomc

First 2 years it was a jersey, this year it's a Great Dublin Bike Ride top, per the FAQ on the site. From what I remember there was a mixup last year with people who registered early not getting a jersey and some registering near the end getting one. So it's probably safer to give everyone the same item.

Event already full or why is registration not possible anymore?

I think registration is only open to those, who received the text message with unique code.
I think code was sent to people who have done event in the past, or are members of Cycling Ireland.

General registration will open for everyone at a later stage, I think.

    Lot of thinks!!!!

I am a member of cycling Ireland, but didn't do the event last year. Might be that.

Did EventMaster host the GDBR last year, don't remember signing up for it and neither does my browser. I've renewed my CI licence and I did the cycle last year how do I go about getting a code, will I get one automatically?

Turns out I'm away when this is on so that's the decision made but I feel like the pricing might have put me off either way. I truly can't understand how it costs 22 quid more to cycle an extra 40km. The closed quays and the priority at junctions is a great reason to do this event but, sadly, I think the price has killed my interest in it.

I'm pretty sure I signed up through the CI website itself last year but could be totally imagining that.

You're not imaging it, that's exactly how it was handled last year so it's strange to see them outsource it this year.

I hope the food stops are better organised, Last year I thought the first one was for the 60k it was so close to the start, the last one I nearly didn't bother with was so close to the finish. Could really do with one in Garristown if the same route this year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,572 ✭✭✭DominoDub

Looks like stops are in the same locations ...or maybe website is not updated from last year.

A stop at the 80KM mark on the 100km route is of no use .

I wonder will some enterprising people setup something in Garristown.

Last year a cake sale organised by some local Garristown ladies cleaned up :D

This is a genuinely great idea. Since the event is for profit (edit: this turns out to be wrong - event is not-for-profit) any prospective cake sale ladies should prominently feature whatever cause (fixing the school playground, church roof, whatever) and have plenty of water on hand (organise a collection of those 5l bottles the supermarkets have and fill them from the taps).

If I was doing this I'd be tempted to have a donation system. If they charge then cyclists are unlikely to have change (who carries coins) and will feel ripped off if it's €5 for a slice of cake. If it's a donation for a good cause I'd say plenty of people would drop in €10 or €20.

Assume you meant not for profit?

It's the Sports Council running it at cost.

Actually I didn't, so thanks for pointing this out.

I read in the FAQ that there was no charity involved and I assumed at that price that someone was making a profit.

Signed up last week for the 100k.

It's my first one but I've done about 50k of the route around Naul/Garristown.

Got the discount code with CI for €45.

What kind of food do they provide, sandwiches, bananas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,724 ✭✭✭jaqian

Went to register and I notice that we have to pay for the jerseys this year. Most sportives give the jersey for free, what a rip off.
