    Finito!

Well I have to say, some outstanding performances from the novices!
@ariana, you must be over the moon. Well done hitting your target after the injury.

Looking forward to race reports this week :)

Over the moon doesn't come close :)

And also humbled. I feel very lucky to have made the start line today and even luckier to make the finish. The God's were with me but unfortunately not with everyone this time and I do appreciate how lucky I am to be sitting here admiring my medal right now :)

Wow. I can't stop crying. I ran a marathon. I can't believe it. What an amazing experience. Mental. The crowds, the support, the sunshine!!

I am so so so proud of me right now.

And so so so bloody appreciative of all of you on here who have got me to this point. I don't know where to start, I really don't.... I'm lost for words right now.

I'm sorry I couldn't stay in Mcgrattans for longer but I hope everyone has a great time celebrating their achievements.

I still can't believe it. Anyone else wearing their medal to bed tonight??

So delighted for you - amazing. Great when it all comes together.
    Celebrate long and well!

Added my bib no. And times there.
Had a great day. Felt I was faster on the second half but the stats don't match. Happy with not hitting the dreaded wall and I pushed it to the end.
Well done to everyone today. I'm just buzzing!

Come on the DCM 2017 Novice Group you absolutely smashed it out there today! Every single one of you regardless of whatever time you got today have ran a fricking marathon!!

You need to all give yourselves a massive pat on the back for everything you have done over the past few months and I hope today was the reward that you all deserved so much.

Everything about the day will live long in your memories.....even the painful parts as these are what make us stronger.

Now pour yourself a nice glass of wine or grab a beer from the fridge and stare at that big shiny medal for the evening.

I am super proud of every last one of you.

To the Graduate Class of 2017 it has been a blast.

    C

Delighted with myself .slightly overtime but that’s allowed because I based it in 40km not 42km.

My biggest run to date was 30 and I struggled from clonskeagh on

My nipples got seriously chaffed and my top looked quite appropriate for Halloween with two big bloody spots!!! Think every spectator commented or cringed.

Any way I DID THE MARATHON!!!

I’m doing San Sebastián in exactly 4 weeks. Any tips with regards recovery and training?

Week off, week 2 and 3 train(1 big run each week ), week 4 rest

Tough day, realised fairly soon on that with a tight ITB/sore knee that the B goal of 4 hours was more realistic. Needless to say it didn't get much better from there. Such a relief to see that finish line! Well done to everyone today. So whats the next marathon??;)

Alrighty, my race report, so (I'll try and keep it short).

Started in Wave 4, and took it easy, remembering the lesson I'd learned from the HM about heading out too quickly.

Hills through Smithfield were fine, but fresh legs, and all! Took my first gel around 5 miles in, on Chesterfield Avenue.

The legendary Castleknock reputation didn't disappoint. And it's also sorta my part of the world, so felt very emotional passing through. Got to the highest point in the course, feeling good, and enjoyed the downhills after that.

More great welcomes from Chapilizod. Not so long ago I'd doubted if I'd even manage to cross the Liffey on this run, so now I'd passed it twice and I felt great doing so!

The hill on St. Lawrence Road under the bipass was tough, but I took it slowly. Ditto the hill on Sarsfield under the railway. Took my second gel just as I got to Inchicore Road.

Nice crowd at Kilmainham, had enjoyed the run so far. Knew I was getting close-ish to the half way mark. As I'd had to stop and walk during the HM, I had a goal to get at least to the 13 mile mark without having to stop and run. So far, so good.

SCR, Dolphin's Barn, Crumlin Road, not a lot to mention. There was a 13 mile notice on the Crumlin Road, and a good half kilometer later, the mat and the balloons telling us we'd passed 13 miles again, so not sure why the discrepancy. Also, road felt really sticky after passing the mat, which wasn't pleasant under the feet.

I'd made the goal of running the HM distance without stopping. Now it was a case of seeing how far I could go. I got as far as 16 miles, but it was a mental effort to keep going that far, and I didn't really enjoy it. I stopped to walk and took my third gel. I decided I'd try and walk a kilometer and run a kilometer from here on in.

Shockingly, I managed to stick to that plan. It'd be hard to say which was harder. When I stopped to walk, the top of the legs and hips ached. When I ran, I felt exhausted. Neither was easy, and I actually welcomed the relief of each section as my watch buzzed the end of a kilometer so I could switch over.

The rest of the race was a bit of a blur. My alternating pattern meant that I actually ran heartbreak hill, and it wasn't too bad, and then walked Fosters Avenue which should have been a nice downhill easy run. I felt quite desperate coming up to the Stillorgan bipass. I was too close to give up now, yet I was still so-oooo far away and in so-oooo much pain. I felt like crying.

On to the bipass, Nutley Lane, Merrion Road, and timed the alternating well enough that I ended up running the last 800m, in, what felt like, a rather comfortable state, considering how I'd been only 2-3 miles previously.

Delighted with my time, under the six hours that I'd predicted.

I hobbled to McGrattan's - lovely to meet everyone that I did today. Those pre-race, Muddypaws at the start, SillyMoo at the end, and more again in McGrattan's.

I didn't stay long in McGrattan's, I was tired. I didn't even really know how tired I was until I made the journey back to the car, parked in St. Stephen's Green car park. That 950m (according to Google!) was a lot harder than the 26.2 miles. I'd a very painful right hip, and had to stop every now and then to catch my breath and stretch or rest the legs. I feared I'd not be able to drive, but thankfully that turned out okay. Getting out of the car when I got home was again extremely difficult. I had a lovely shower, and contemplated going straight to bed, but will aim to stay up a bit longer. I don't look forward to the next couple of days as the muscles really start to give out.

But, I'm immensely proud of myself!! I AM A MARATHON RUNNER!! I might need a few days for that information to actually sink in. Huge thanks to Wubble as our mentor, to AMK, Craig, Hot Buttered Scones, The Muppet, and god, there's probably loads I've forgotten, so apologies, as our unofficial mentors too. And also to all the other novices who gave great support to their fellow newbies. Maybe it's the endorphins or something, but I'll say it anyway: I love you guys!!!!

Well it's finally done , the goal I set myself many years ago of 10 marathons before I hit 40 is complete. I joined this thread because it was a number of years since my ninth marathon and it genuinely felt like I was training for my first.
The advice and support in this thread has been exceptional- each and every one of you should be very very proud of yourselves for a magnificent achievement and also of the community you built here.

Two years ago I finished my final session of chemotherapy and I made a promise to myself that when I was able I would complete my goal of 10 marathons. Today was the slowest of my 10 but it is without a shadow of a doubt the one I'm most proud of.

Well done everyone, hopefully this will be the first of many marathons for you but for me my marathon boots are being hung up ( does not apply to half marathons ☺️)
    Take care,
    Mark

Well done everyone. Some great runs today. I struggled from half way but got to the line.

Ill throw up a race report later if I can remember what happened!

No they won't, mind your own business :)

I started this thread. So in a way it is my business.

What you've just posted has zero relevance to anything here.

I have no idea why you have decided to jump in to this thread.

Whether I or anyone else here agrees or disagrees with your view does not matter a jot.

Lay off. Go annoy someone else.

Finally home...knee in an absolute jock. I suppose it's a risk you take running your first marathon when you're over 50! It was folding underneath me from about 30k but no way was I giving in to it! 3:47:20 and a near 7 minute negative split. You'll see those words here a few times, you'll see lots hit their target times...Why? Because of the help of a fantastic mentor and lots of excellent advice from his expert sidekicks. It was drilled into us again and again to be cautious until Castleknock at least. To them the kudos for perfect preparation and advice. To any 2018 novices who will read back on this thread in 8/9/10 months please pay heed and start slowly.

I'll do a race report tomorrow but for now a huge thanks also to my fellow novices, a really tight and supportive little group who did everything possible to help each other.

Well done everyone! I watched the entire thing today, from the race leaders to lads walking the footpaths alone after Gardai had re-opened the road, shouted as much encouragement as I could and bought two convenience stores out of jaffa cakes and fig rolls. Incredible experience.

Ran it last year and realised then that the marathon isn't about you, its about others. Its about helping randomers and stopping and looking around you at ordinary people doing some pretty extraordinary things. Its about people, a lot of people, who've been through a lot in their lives and maybe some who haven't been through enough in their lives. Its about super fast people and super slow people. About the strong and the weak. But most of all I think its about giving, giving something to yourself that you probably deserved and neglected for a long time, and giving something to others.

So after the cramps and muscle aches have gone and the afterglow is beginning to dim and the medal is finally off your neck and hanging on the wall, hopefully you'll all take a bit of that spirit back into your own lives and get a chance to give something back. To your own commuities and your own people, or if you live in Dublin, to the marathon itself. That only happened today because a bunch of volunteers, literally thousands I suspect, gave up their time to marshall the route, block the roads, put up the signs etc..

So if you get a chance give a little back! Even if it just means paying more attention to people around you in your community.

    And well done!

(sorry if that was a bit emotional but it was a bit emotional watching you all today!)

Well done everyone on you achievements today. Irespective of your stating point it's a long tough journey to the finish line on your first marathon.

What you achieved today will take some time to sink in . Put the feet up now for a while and enjoy the feeling of being rather special.
