Wonder what happened, jbl apologize, small payout and a job back?

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,725 ✭✭✭SureYWouldntYa

Please let him move back up to the main roster in time

We've had how many years of Michael Cole and "Oh my", commentary really makes a difference and a team of Mauro and Corey Graves would be oh so good

  • Registered Users Posts: 28,870 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

So i assume Tom Phillips is going to focus on SD?

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,689 ✭✭✭sky88

I'm not a huge fan of Mauro but think he's a better fit for nxt than the main roster

  • Registered Users Posts: 21,374 ✭✭✭✭martyos121

Some turnaround for Mauro, going from being forced out of your dream job due to backstage BS and hazing to being the man to call the biggest sporting event of the year (Mayweather vs. McGregor) and then on top of that getting his job back in a presumably much happier environment. Really pleased for him.

The cynic in me say that is the reason Vince is bringing him back in.

I doubt Vince was that involved all accounts seem to be he's hands off on nxt

Perhaps HHH brokered a deal to bring him back.

Not having Vince barking in his ear at NXT would be a big plus. And HHH has been acting as peacemaker of sorts these past few years too, managing to get Warrior and Bruno Sammartino to come back.

NXT has gone up another step in my estimations now!

To be fair to Michael Cole, hes a decent commentator, Id argue most guys are better than they appear on WWE main shows.

Cole was fantastic on the UK shows and The Beast in the East special. Vince is the problem IMO.

Definitely, Cole is very slick and polished commentator but he's also the shill guy made to laugh uproariously at every awful segment so he has negative credibility. Part of me thinks the man should've stood up for his character - other commentators aren't shilly mcshill or do it in a less embarrassing way. That said he's also held a job for the guts of 20 years. I hear he's a real sour guy with fans, never hear any good experiences with people meeting him.

Would I be right in saying Cole was the first no wrestler since tony schiavone to be given a shot at WWE/F?

He came in with no repuation and was basically did what he was told and got paid. I dont blame the guy as he made a living out of it. He simply does what hes told.

Well, lol, Rob Bartlett! "American comedian, actor, impressionist, and writer". He's a quadruple threat!

    tumblr_inline_n62ev95kup1r5344l.png

I suppose Kevin Kelly & Jim Ross worked as a ring announcer/ref in smaller organisations before being picked up by a big company (unlike a wrestler/promoter-turned-commentator). But ya Cole is the lead voice for RAW working his way up from no prior wrestling experience, doing promos & Livewire!

He's (Cole) also the producer of commentary at NXT isn't he? Fairly sure I saw clips of him feeding lines to the guys in Breaking Ground or something like that. Must be kinda annoying to be told by fans that commentary in NXT is so much better than his own when he produces it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,689 ✭✭✭sky88

I think cole is alongside regal as one of hhh guys he leans backstage.

I think cole was always going to have people not like him as he has to say what Vince wants. I can't find it know but there's a YouTube video were Vince is speaking and cold basically has to just say yes.

    This it ?

Cole can be a good commentator if left to his own devices but the damage to him and his general reputation amongst fans is done, he stopped getting a lot of criticism for a while after how he handled the Lawler heart attack and rightfully so

My main problem with him is the lack of believability in his voice that you get with Graves/Mauro/JR, even Tom Phillips is more believable than Cole

That is a soul-crushing 47s. It used to be a dream job of mine to commentate for WWE (or be a writer) but it sounds so demoralising.

Don't like Cole and his "Oh my!" but Vince must be a terror to have in your ear constantly.

Even supposed hard-man, JBL, looks like he has to walk on eggshells around Vince's preferred parlance. From last week...

I remember Mick Foley saying that his stint as a com on Smackdown was one of his worst experiences in WWE.

Vince roaring obscenities into his ear and blowing his top over silly little details like Foley saying belt instead of championship.

Mick said that he wasn't going to allow anybody speak to him like that.

I can't remember what match it was but I remember him giving a really delayed "Oh my!" which made me think he was told to say it

Ye Foley speaks about it at length but doesn't specify exact phrases McMahon yelled at him in his "Countdown to Lockdown" book.

JBL will step away from commentary.

    https://www.cagesideseats.com/wwe/2017/9/1/16244938/jbl-smackdown-live-commentary-role
    JBL:
After much consideration, I will be stepping back my weekly role as Smackdown Announcer to dedicate more continuous time on the work I have done since 2010 with at risk kids and communities. My new schedule will allow me to continue to be a part of the WWE family and also continue my work that I feel is the most important thing in my life. I will continue my 20+ year relationship with WWE and will appear on such marquee shows as Tribute to the Troops, WrestleMania, amongst others.

With the help of Beyond Sport, I founded Beyond Rugby Bermuda in 2010--which has been recognized as one of the world's best charities for work with at risk, gang focused, youth intervention. Beyond Rugby Bermuda won the 2014 NACRA Fair Play Award out of 7,000 programs and 17 countries for its work with at risk kids. I was named as a Beyond Sport Global Ambassador--an organization backed by all major sports leagues in the U.S.

I'm proud to say that in addition to being Smackdown's longest reigning WWE Champion, I inspired WWE's Tribute to the Troops over 10 years ago. WWE has been my partner in all my philanthropic works and this new deal with WWE ensures that will continue. WWE has made my dreams come true and helped me become a global name. And now, WWE is helping me use that name to make a difference.

So will we see Mauro bumped back up to Smackdown now I wonder.

No apparently Corey graves is doing both raw and smackdown.

Nigel getting the main roster call up way sooner than anticipated. Hopefully Vince cares so little about Main Event and 205 Live that he doesn't get ruined.

I really don't know why Lawler doesn't get one of the spots. Who gives a **** what age he is, he's good at his job. Graves is good but overexposure does no one any favours.

Interesting that SI noted JBL was not the primary person of interest in the Mauro-bullying story, buried in their piece about him stepping away

    https://www.si.com/extra-mustard/2017/09/04/jbl-quits-commentary-wwe-smackdown-live

"Upon further review, Layfield was not the primary person of interest behind the Ranallo situation, which has allegedly been resolved with his return to the company, nor was he ever disciplined by the company for anything related to Ranallo.

WWE Chairman and CEO Vince McMahon, exhibiting the same stubbornness that helped turn his company into a global juggernaut, refused to cave to public pressure to fire Layfield, especially after Layfield served as the scapegoat in the Ranallo situation that was far more centered on Ranallo’s frustration with the culture and climate toward bullying that he believed McMahon had built within the company."

From the latest Observer. While talking about JBL leaving SD, Meltzer added this bit:

Ranallo’s primary issues were not with Layfield, but with the culture in place at the time headed by Vince McMahon. Layfield was part of it, but not the key part of it. Layfield’s actions were the straw that broke the camel’s back in a situation that has been resolved enough to where Ranallo returned with the proviso he’s working and reporting to Michael Cole and Paul Levesque, neither of which he ever had any problems with and they were the two people who recruited him into the company in the first place.
