    It's a Communion, not a feckin Knighthood.

is communion really a big deal? I don't have kids and I'm a prod... what am I missing?

I never heard any of my friends mentioning their communion. we have confirmations but they're no more a big deal in our lives than any of my RC friends. I barely remember it.

I bet loads of these families have a very good reason for not wanting the grandparents around.

If they are the type to ring Joe Duffy because they didn't get invited to the first communion then its no surprise they dont want them there.

Why are they not being invited?

Is it too much to expect Joe Duffy to ask?

    I'm not listening but I assume that's a typo?

No. Sorry. That's what I meant to say

Is the granny fond of the sherry? Perhaps she would arrive at the church half cut.

As has been said, you just can't go if not invited, especially if it's a small church where seating is assigned.

And Joe is all good about just turning up.

Next weeks show.. Joe, there was ructions at my kids communion, someone turned up uninvited and caused a scene, reigniting some family feud.

edit:Dermot got in there with his similar great mind a few moments earlier.

Frankly, if I wasn't invited to a religious ceremony involving my grandkids, I've be relieved. Not that I'd go, anyway.

One of the great contradictions in Irish society. On another day, these women would be raging against the excesses of clerical abuse and how the nuns abused them etc etc

    I'm a prod... what am I missing?

The body of Christ and salvation, and zombie Jesus I think.

Of course it's a big deal - bouncy castles, lots of ice cream and plenty of notes.

    true!

I'm just wondering why the granny was suggesting going to church to see. It's not like someone's getting married or sent off. just a boring ceremony surely.
