those are simple failures by the authorities to enforce the law because they haven't the resources. give them the resources.

    Resources or framework? Perhaps both?

Sorry if this has been answered but imo it hasn't.. What exactly does the status mean? Apart from legal recognition or whatever? How will it directly impact on the travelling community?
I mean will the average Joe Traveller have a different experience tomorrow than yesterday?

Travellers are no longer travelling around the road to mend tin pots and pans anymore.

So why are they called "Travellers" ?

To my mind they are a law unto themselves, and they know it and get away with it, unlike the rest of us.

Anyway, I don't have much respect for them, they do not have any time for their wives or educating their children. That is a controlling thing by the men who like fighting, drug dealing and keeping their families in tow.

Tell me otherwise. I'd love to have a mega caravan pulled by a top of the range Jeep whilst on Social Welfare. Joke almighty. They run rings aroud us.

They are called travellers because old-fashioned words such as 'itinerants' have been declared politically incorrect.

Even though 'itinerant' literally means the exact same thing as 'traveller'.

Now, call me a right wing hate-monger, but 'tis almost as though words like 'itinerant' have been de facto banned because of the actual behaviour of members of the actual travelling community...maybe anti-traveller prejudice has less to do with prejudice and more to do with a legitimate reaction.

I'll say one thing in favour of the Travelling Community. They don't block up the Health Service or hospitals or clinics, at least not in my experience. I've never seen one with a disability, or Down Syndrome (for example), or in a wheelchair, or with a walking-stick or even glasses. I've never seen one who is deformed or seemingly deranged, or blind or suffering from any such ailment.

    Why is that?

I've seen them block up the A&E where I live plenty of times. Is that the kind of thing you mean? Fighting and terrorising people in the hospital waiting room. I saw guards arrive having to fight drunk traveler men and drag them into paddy wagons.
I also remember in my primary school a special ed teacher arriving most days and taking the traveller kids to a separate class. Would that come under your 'blocking up stuff' category?

i would say resources. all crimes those in the traveling community involved in crime would be involved in have laws against them.

incorrect. political correctness doesn't exist, and words such as 'itinerant' have not been banned or declared mythical politically incorrect. anti-traveller prejudice is to do with bigotry and being able to get away with it and nothing more, with excuses made by those taking part in it who would if they could, do the exact same to other minorities. it's likely that they don't do it to other minorities though, as they wouldn't get away with it.

Will it still be legal to say I don't like them, or trust them, or say they don't contribute anything positive to our society?

Will Travellers fighting with slash hooks and pitchforks now have to be recognised as a legitimate sport?

Just wondered if anyone had a great interraction with a Traveller calling to their house.

I am sure there must be so many positive experiences, so let us know.

    Boss.

Plenty of negative and positive experiences with them from growing up in a rural Post Office & Shop. The positive experiences were extremely positive. One family still brings my little sister a birthday present every year without fail. (They see her as a bit of a miracle child with the circumstances surrounding her birth.)

Plenty of negatives too but they were generally confined to the early days in business. A few of their community would come in and steal. After a while, we approached some senior figures about it. Nothing sinister, my father just went to them and explained that he was trying his best to raise a young family from the shop. Never had a problem again after that. The worst offender even came in and apologised. I've no doubt they just went elsewhere and stole instead but it's good to know where you stand with them for selfish reasons.

Would I like to live beside a traveller family?
No, in general my experience is that they either don't keep their property in great shape or if they do, it's full of awful tack. They have different tastes and values around property. A high percentage are involved in criminality too which can't be ignored. On that note, Employers don't exactly fall over themselves to employ them and many just don't want to work.

We had a settled traveller play on the local football team. He was mad as a hatter but great craic. He would be "allowed" into the pub after games and he loved being part of a team. He had a proper job etc. Unfortunately he went onto become a major drug dealer when he lost his way years later.

Would I invite them into my home? The ones I know, 100%. That one family have been in our family home many times. We've helped them fill in forms etc as none of them can read or write.

Growing up in a business that deals with lots of different people every day opens your eyes. The biggest scumbag we dealt with was the angelic daughter of "front row in the church" parents. We caught her stealing thousands. Went to her parents rather than the cops and they started a boycott of the shop when we showed them the footage. They even went to the Priest about it and a loaded announcement was made in Mass one Sunday about not spreading vicious rumours etc etc... it all died down once the cops had to be called in.

Would I live beside those settled, church going knackers... No.

Travellers do need to get their act together in general. They no longer live truly nomadic lives and they now accept benefits they never had in the past. They need to thow the line but there's plenty settled communities with similar problems.

Pretty sure the lad was making a Jimmy Carr esque joke.

I doubt he really holds desires to see a traveller genocide.

    Super.

They're now free to continue their reign of terror on the countries elderly, while being protected from criticism by both the law and the hysterical, permanently offended tossers of the country.

Long live Enda. The absolutely not retarded and pandering glorious leader.

It's a little like the Trump thing. The lefties created Trump. You can't say this or you can't say that so they voted in a guy that says it all.
Likewise with travellers. The more threads like this, the more talk like this down the pub or in the street the more protection they will get. It's the people that are so vocal with their stereo types that makes the government have to protect them more.
If they were treated equal by settled people they wouldn't have as many rights. I'm not sure if I'm explaining it right but basically it's the public traveller haters that are giving them the rights & protection that they do not want them to have.
It's actually pretty funny when you think about it

    You're point makes no sense.

On the one hand you say because we can't say things we created trump who will say those things.

Then you say if we say things about travellers we just create more rights for them.

    Both outcomes are totally different.

Lived near halting site about Mile away, but as crow flies they could cross fields, steal cattle, horses belonging to farmers.

Disgusted they have been given this freedom after years of fighting and attacking innocent people and people sleeping with one eye open. Honest to God of they were all put into a field left to rot it would not bother me.

I've never heard of them stealing cattle....have often heard of them putting horses in where there not wanted etc

But stealing cattle....their not the easiest thing handled/moved around....even quite/pettish ones are half wild for people other than their owners?

And killing cattle, but I wanted go easy on them.

I could name dozens of other things, but they target the quie man and woman who mind their own business.

All hardman talk. Its sad that our local community had to resort to firing gunshots into the sky at 5am in the morning for it to calm down.

Does anybody here socialise with or talk to travellers at least once a month?I don't think you can defend them as a race unless you genuinely interact with them.
