    The website (https://www.snugboroughinterchange.ie/) says:

    • The new traffic signals will go into operation to the entire 5-Arm Junction before the end of July.
    • active travel corridors through the underpasses will form the last element of the works scheduled to be completed in September 2024

It will prolly come on line, just in time to really screw up school traffic in September.

What genius decided to put 2.5 lanes at the bottom of the snugborough road from Waterville. Bus lane opens and has a left turn lane to turn left towards the hospital side of Waterville. From there there's half a lane to the N3 ramp. Mind blowing

I think that might the continuation of the cycle path?

So there's actually no lane to turn onto the N3 ramp?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,911 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

    That is the cycle lane.

Just before the traffic lights at Waterville, the bus lane ends. Those turning left into Waterville can enter the left-hand lane after the bus lane ends. See the left-turn only lane in @raheny red picture.

After the traffic lights at Waterville, general traffic can enter the left-hand lane to turn left onto the N3 ramp. After the N3 ramp junction, traffic straight ahead for Snugborough Road and left for Blanchardstown Village can enter the left-hand lane.

The small lane on the left is a cycle lane the whole way through.

Some of the markings are not down yet.

The left turn into Waterville is after the traffic lights though, that's the problem. There's no dedicated N3 ramp lane coming from that side and the lane is frequently blocked by two lanes of traffic heading onto the bridge. This is the problem. It took me 40 minutes to get to Castleknock last Friday evening

The junction has now been completed and all final traffic movements are now available. It'll be interesting to see if it results in any improvements. We may have to wait until September to judge as people get used to new layout and peak holiday season ends.

Really? The road in Blanchardstown village at the circle k heading to the junction was like a dirt track at 9pm last night? Haven't been out today

The interchange is now open and fully operational under permanent arrangement.

Miracle happened to me on Friday: drove off the N3 up to the junction turned right to go past the NAC without stopping. This was around 13h00. Also I think all the lanes on the off ramp Up to the lights were open - I say ‘’I think’ as I didn’t stop.:)

I didn't think I'd be saying this but it really does seem like an improvement. I've barely waited more than a minute at it in the last week. Will be interesting to see when the kids get back to school in September how it copes.

The ramp onto the N3 near the hospital most definitely isn't finished but I'm amazed at how quickly they sorted the approach to the junction from the village

Are there no longer tailbacks from the N3 off ramp heading right over the bridge towards Ballycoolin/Waterville?. I passed last Thursday which was probably the last day of the old regime and the tailbacks were the worst I'd ever seen. Great news if folks are seeing positive impacts immediately!

The downside is the improved flow will encourage more people to use the junction and then it'll return to its former congested mess. Then they'll have to add just one more lane.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

There are certainly tailbacks in the opposite direction. Getting to the junction from Waterville is a disaster many times of the day since they took the roundabout out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,911 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

The problem there is that they retained the right turn on exiting Waterville. That lengthens all the sequences of lights.

Would have been better if they had stuck to the original plan and had right turns at the other exit from Waterville.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

Absolutely NOT! I live in the upper part and delays to get out onto the Snugborough road were bad enough already without sending thousands of more people to use that entrance/exit. The problem is the multitude of industrial estates off the top of the Snugborough Road towards Ballycoolin and towards Tyrellstown. The volume of large trucks and workers who enter/exit at the same time is not reflected in the light sequence at the big junction. It's worse now than ever.

I’ve used it three times this past week & can honestly say it’s a huge difference. Once I drove straight up to the lights @ turned right for Ballycoolin without stopping. Only negative I’d say is it’s 2 lanes crossing the bridge but as soon as one hits the Snugborough Road, the inside lane becomes a bus lane.

But as someone else said the real proof will be visible come September.

Lights are out at the Snugborough/Waterville/N3 junctions.

Definitely a massive improvement at the moment, coming down from ballycoolin is still a bit of a pain but maybe they'll tweak the lights sequence if needed

School holidays are now over. I pass this junction off peak and it seems to be effective. Has it improved for peak times?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,597 ✭✭✭anniehoo

I don't want to jinx it but yes it's been fantastic. There's hardly any tailbacks now and several times I've managed to drive the whole way up and through a green light without stopping which was unheard of before that. After a long commute home, I used to dread the last bit which was that slip road, now it's amazing. Long may it last!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,570 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

Yep I drove up it today off the n3 heading left at the top and just missed the lights but they changed again within 2 or 3 minutes as there is a filter light there now so very impressive

Going up is rarely a problem since. Getting down to the junction from the NAC side is another story. Frequently backed up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,911 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

The original design only had a left-turn option for exiting Waterville. Changing the design to accommodate a right-turn option has caused that particular delay.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,221 ✭✭✭✭Caranica

Not true. The Council agreed with residents of Waterville that that would funnel thousands of cars a day towards the upper Waterville exit which would have been a total nightmare. The junction at the bottom of the road is worse than the roundabout ever was.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,911 ✭✭✭✭blanch152

I am not sure which part of my post you are saying is not true.

You have accepted that the Council changed the plan following representations from Waterville residents. That we clearly agree on.

The residents in Waterville have benefitted from the change, but that has been at the expense of those cars travelling down the Snugborough Road from Ballycoolin. I predicted that would happen, and it has.

The pedestrian lights always caused that delay. Adding in the second set of lights after removing the roundabout is the problem. Leaving the roundabout was the solution that would have kept traffic moving
