Debating changing my 162 Astra k 1.4T 150bhp in for a VRS diesel.

Also looking at an sri insignia.

Someone convince me I'm crazy to swap a 162 or justify the change for me please !

I'm also afraid to see how much my car has depreciated already !

How'd you find the superb and what model - looking to move from a touareg into a superb elegance estate but still on the fence re: the skoda not about exporting the touareg.

Good car with a great spec in l&k. Excellent boot space (combi) and leg room in rear. Power with the 170bhp dsg is fine, but it's certainly no rocket. Ours is a 2013 and that gen is actually not that wide, so it ain't great for three small kids unless you want to go down the multi mac route. Down sides for me; 18 inch wheels are waste of time in this country - replaced another 2 month old eagle F1 last month, car is far from quiet inside and the head unit is annoyingly slow to start. It is a fantastically practical car though. Wasn't going to buy one but I see no value in the equivalent spec new model.

My concern is what way to route the cable up the A pillar as I think it has a airbag in it.

  • Registered Users Posts: 73,384 ✭✭✭✭colm_mcm

The airbag isn't in the pillar itself. It's behind the roof lining.

Have a project Saab 9-3 Aero sitting up for the last while. The only key of the Saab was stolen when my own car was broken in to. So it needs a new key and an engine as the bottom end is knocking :(

    Labas. :)

Zapas would be interesting, but I woukd much prefer volga from Lithuania. Preferably black. :)
I wouldn't drive it from Lithuania to Ireland though, way to unpredictable classic.)

They had a volga few years back and gave it away. Was a lovely looking car in white.

The newer volgas are funny looking. They put a modern front and rear end on them. The doors are really small though.

I love all that Eastern European/Russian stuff.

Keeping the e39 525i. Fitted an android to it before Christmas and it's great. Now it's completely up to date 're: connectivity. Can't see the benefit of a newer car over it now. Love that car.

Replacing the interior wood trim with silver, looks much better, it is a silver exterior too.

Need to replace front bumper too, if anyone has a sport bumper for sale let me know!

One thing I might do if I can get classic insurance is buy either an e46 or e36 convertible as a second car, or perhaps an Audi a4 or a merc. Small money, and could possibly go as far as an 02 now to qualify for classic insurance.

You'd pick up a new spurious bumper now for about 160 for the Sport or 200 or so with Fogs included, way nicer look if your one's An SE.

08 accord 2.2 i-ctdi here. Will be keeping it for as long as possible. Have it since 09 and 200k kms on her. Needs a wheel bearings this week but other than that has been savagely reliable and economical.
Also have an Isuzu dmax for the farm. Crew cab. 180k kms on her of hardship and she has only ever had two new sets of rear suspension bushes. Hilux reliability at a fraction of the cost. Will be staying until she dies. I remember a man telling me that when you find a vehicle that absolutely suits your needs you will love her to bits. He was not wrong in any way.

Sell at least 1 car if not all three and buy 1 to 2 new to me cars.

    How far along am I?

I know pretty much I'll export all cars.

Cars to buy - all but ruled out convertibles, mpv's, coupes.

Have a list of cars I'm looking at - estate first

Skoda Superb is high up but it's not cheap and is in near 5 series money - the passat is also a runner, was not looking Japanese but maybe I should - Toyota/Mazda etc

What about Hyundai's the list goes on!

It's already a Sport bumper, there was a little crack in it but then I clipped a very high kerb and part of the corner broke off. Pity, the rest of it was immaculate.

    Thanks Oafley!
L&K spec is very nice - ventilated front seats iirc.
Yours is the 159co2 not the slightly newer 168bhp with 141co2?
Overall it's not a cheap car - not quite A6 money but on a par if not higher than a passat.

03 TDI Passat that I never want to change but the electrics are worrying me. Driver window rarely works and the alarm has started going off from time to time. Due a service soon so might see if the mechanic can do anything.

Hoping to upgrade the 2010 520 F10 in July to the new G30 Touring. It's got only 130 k km with daily 40km run of 75-25% 120kmpg Dual Carriage way to urban. I have full BMW service on engine and other works brakes etc by independent specialist. Herself has a 08 Passat that has a few lady dents, will sort them out and give it a good polish. Will be keeping as its a 1.4TSI and only need a slight leak in a coolant hose fixed and those few dents.

Have a '06 Astra OPC outside.

Hoping to get 2 or 3 years out if it. 2019/20 I'll take the plunge and buy something ok.
Wouldn't mind a powerful estate car. 3 doors can make life a tiny bit awkward.

Existing car is a 2005 320i with enough wrong that it's not worth fixing everything. Still worth 2k as a trade in so looking at adding some cash and going PCP on a new car for the first time.

Looked at a Highline Golf - goregous car with a great spec. Also looked at a 1 series, and the repayments are over 100 quid cheaper because it'll hold it's value. Poverty spec, but I want to stick with BMW ideally so at least in 3 years or 6 years at most, I'll be able to bump up enough to get a nice 3er :)

The current state of the household is

    2005 Audi S4, 135,000miles
    2013 Merc SL550, 30,000 miles (Fiancee's, mainly)
2015 VW Passat TDI, 35,000 miles.

No changes are expected the first 8 months of the year. I have two significant issues to concern me. One is that I likely need to make a decision on the return of the TDI under the VW Dieselgate settlement. Either return it for basically full value, or put cash in my pocket and keep it. The other issue is that the S4 is showing its age, the air conditioning just went out and it's $10,000 to repair the bloody thing. On the plus side, it's a convertible, so warm days can still survive, on the downside, I live in California, and when it's really hot, you can't drop the roof and survive nicely. The S4 is also the only car I have with AWD, which is really bloody useful for getting over the mountains in winter.

I am leaning in favour of returning the TDI for two reasons. Firstly, I have no idea what the trade-in value would be if I kept it, and secondly, I'm most of the way to out of warranty already, so why not start afresh at 0? Which begs the question of what to replace it with. Fortunately, the fiancee is a bit of a gearhead, so will support my acquisition of an utterly impractical vehicle, and also help me out a bit financially. (I'm helping her out a bit with the SL right now).

The 'ideal' car is the Cadillac CTS-V, but it's quite pricey, not AWD, and I might be happy with 200hp less and stick with the V-Sport. (The Merc has about the same 430hp and seems fast enough)
The 'best compromise' is the Audi S6. A gently used car should be quite affordable, and being AWD, I can also lose the S4 for my winter purposes.
The 'most practical' is a Tesla S. I commute a lot and the price of electricity is a lot less than petrol. However, it doesn't go 'vroom', and I'm sure over the next 40 years of my life, I'll be forced into electricity anyway, so why not get the vroom now while I can?

I'll revisit the issue at the end of 2017, I have a bit of time to decide the VW question. Maybe the dealers will give some good prices as they make room for the 2018s on the lot. An argument for keeping the S4 also is that it's 'my' convertible, not the fiancee's, and it's also likely the last manual transmission car I'll have.

I've had 3 cars of my own ever. The current is by far the longest. I've had my Golf since October 2015 and don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon. According to what I've tracked in fuelly, I've done about 21k in it.

It hasn't been perfect but far from any nightmares. It misfires a lot, which can be annoying. Giving it the boot in too high a gear, it shudders and a flashing engine light.

But unless all the coil packs decide to give up at the same time, I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon. I wouldn't even know what to get next anyway. Would like something a bit.. rarer. Which can be a completely different thing here than in Ireland. I've also mulled over the idea of something smaller and faster. :D

Definitely keeping my E46 diesel. 128k miles and going like a clock. Was really lucky to find a reasonable mileage diesel that age and with an extensive history, going for buttons.

It needs a small bit of bodywork and paint done above one of the back doors. Then I'm planning to invest in a decent DA polisher this year. Was thinking about a set of bigger msport alloys for a smaller profile tyre but I'll probably leave them alone for now and spend that cash on a set of decent coilovers, get it a bit lower. Have been quoted a good price for an EGR delete and remap locally so that will probably be the extent of my tinkering on it for 2017.

Get the focus polished up and sold off shortly
NCT the golf, service it later in the year
Buy an RNS 510 radio for the golf
Service the mondeo, fix exhaust and get interior shampooed.

    That's all I think!
