Karlov assassinated in Ankara as gunman shouts 'Aleppo, revenge'. Is this going to mark a decrease in world stability as was seen when Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria was assassinated? From the Telegraph.

Russian ambassador shot dead in Andrey Karlov reported dead
Gunman shouted 'Aleppo,' 'revenge' and 'Allahu Akbar'
Attacker has been 'neutralised' - local media reports
Russia's ambassador to Ankara has been killed in a gun attack while visiting an art exhibition opening in the Turkish capital, television reports said.

Russia's state news agency said Andrey Karlov had died at the scene of gunshot wounds.

Earlier it was reported Mr Karlov had been hospitalised and several other people wounded, NTV and CNN-Turk televisions said.

The attacker has been 'neutralised,' according to Turkish media.

The attack came after days of protests in Turkey over Russia's role in Syria, although Moscow and Ankara are now working closely together to evacuate citizens from Aleppo.

Pictures published by the Hurriyet daily showed at least two men in suits lying flat on the ground as another man brandished a gun.

The attack happened at the Cagdas Sanatlar Merkezi, a major art exhibition hall in the Cankaya district of Ankara where most foreign embassies are located including Russia's mission.

Protesters in Turkey have held Russia responsible for human rights violations in Aleppo.

Not looking good for Turkey if they can't protect diplomats. There is speculation that the gunman had a police ID/ police clearance. Things wou'ldn't be looking good at all for Turkey if that turns out to be true.

WWI wasn't "nukular" and that war was brewing a long time. It was inevitable. One assassination in Sarajevo did not cause the world war.

I don't see another WW, but I don't see a measured response from Russia either.

More news from the Independent. Russia consider this an act of terrorism.
Russia has said it regards the killing of its ambassador to Ankara "as a terrorist attack".

Andrey Karlov was shot in the back as he made a speech at a photo exhibit in the Turkish capital.

Mr Karlov was several minutes into a speech at the embassy-sponsored exhibition when a man wearing a suit and tie shouted "Allahu akbar" and fired at least eight shots, according to an AP photographer in the audience.

The gunman also reportedly shouted: "We die in Aleppo, you die here."

The Prince and heir to the throne of the Austrian-Hungarian empire was shot. This is a diplomat.

So, no. It's nowhere near the same.

Probably not. We've the EU now, M.A.D. (nukes), less competing Empires with more democracies, better access to critical media and so on and so on.

No, the WWI was not caused by an assassination, but you can say that it was just sparked by one. There was a much more complex chain of events before and following the assassination and there were mounting tensions between the parties. The today's event is nothing like that one, both in terms of context and motives.
    So chill, no WWIII yet.

Why would that be the case? It was a Turkish police officer that assassinated the ambassador.

It had to be a Muslim to do it, so predictable. They used to have inventive ways of killing the infidels.

Not liking this. It sounds ominous.

The murderer apparently was part of the security detail for the Russian Ambassador.
