    You wouldnt do that lad.

Pint glass. Crown. Main reason for brexit.

    LOL.

If I remember correctly we got a few pages from another dimwit (or was it you?) whinging about me not backing up my bombshell about Brexit. Maybe we will get a few more now.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,654 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

So your deflection to excuse your childish naivety in believing the pint glass nonsense is to insult the people (I was one of them) who pointed out you were wrong and called you out on your further childish refusal to acknowledge that? Grow up ffs

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,548 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Are people still going with this nonsense about printing information on pint glasses? It was very popular on the thread when it was written.

"If we have to have it printed on a can or bottle it should be on a pint glass in a pub too. Fair is fair. Not the bloddy keg it comes in. What's the reasoning for not printing it on all pint glasses but making the home consumer read it?"

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,654 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Still unable to admit your gullible enough to believe the height of brexit nonsense that's up there with the bendy bananas? Grown ups admit when they are wrong or make a mistake, thats all that was asked of you but you cant even do that

Absolutely. If its on a can or bottle it should be on the glass in the pubs. It wouldnt male sense not to warn people of the dangers of pints in a pub.

  • Registered Users Posts: 17,654 ✭✭✭✭VinLieger

Indeed and they would also then have to pour each pint in the correct corresponding glass to ensure we are getting the right info for each beverage, same for wine, spirits etc etc actually sounds like a great idea now I think on it.....

Just vote with your feet. We`re having a party here next week and I went to my local shopping place. I was going to buy 6 slabs of beer - 3 well know brands and 3 cheapy brand, 3 bottles of wine, couple of bottles of spirits but it was working out at almost €400.00 euros. I put the stuff back , looked up the off licence over the border in Jonesborough and Lidl NI and drove up yesterday and got the exact same list for €199 euros.

Serious saving of 200 euros and all for a 3 hour round trip.

    Breakdown

Well know brand beer (Carlsberg) - €28 each x3 24 500ml cans--€50.00 each down here.

Cheap Lidl brand - there was an offer on of 10 cans of Stella artois for 6.99 - so I got 7 of them = 70 500ml cans - even Lidls "cheap" brand down here was working out at 48 for 24 cans.

    Vodka was €15.78 - €29.00 here

    Gin €14.99 -€29.50 here

3 white wine -15.00 - Tenner each here - exact same brand and type.

^ Looking at those figures, I reckon traffic North this Christmas will be interesting.

This will be the second Christmas with MUP.

Was traffic north interesting last year ?

Other than anecdotal "I saw loads of republic reg cars in ASDA Newry today" are there any real stats for cross border booze shopping post MUP ?

Yes, it was, pretty massive volumes of Southern cars on the M1 anyway, not sure where you'd find the stats but they would make for 'interesting' reading either way if you can find some, judging from the amount of empty pallets in Tesco Banbridge and Asda Enniskillen's off licences I'd say it was definitely up anyway.

  • Moderators, Arts Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 10,585 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hellrazer

I dont think there is a way to track the stats - all I can say is at 10.00 am on Saturday morning I counted 10 republic registered cars out side the off licence and the girl behind the counter said its like that all day Saturday and Sunday with people from the South buying their alcohol.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,405 ✭✭✭Red Silurian

I'd imagine that the annual alcohol sales stats for the island, with both north and south stats shown together would show that.

So if in 2021 there were 100L of alcohol sold in the south and 40L in the north and in 2022 thos efigures were 50L here 100L there, that would suggest MUP isn't working

    MUP isn't working

In my experience its definitely not working.Ill be making that trip once a month now (or more) leading up to Christmas and you know something I might even do my Christmas shopping up there - so not only are the shops in the south losing alcohol sales they are going to lose grocery sales as well.

  • Registered Users Posts: 15,024 ✭✭✭✭Fr Tod Umptious

For twelve weeks up to Nov 2022 it actually showed that even though there was a decrease in alcohol sales in the republic, the level of decrease was less in border counties.

Current regional performance for the latest 12 week indicates that the border counties are performing better than the rest of Ireland for alcohol, with volume declines of 4% compared to 10.6%.

A lot of people were shocked at the amount they had to pay in ROI for booze last Christmas and won't be making that mistake again.

How do you propose such stats exist though? We don't have customs posts, supermarkets don't ask their customers where they're from.

    Life ain't always empty.

  • Registered Users Posts: 33,963 ✭✭✭✭Hotblack Desiato

Because people in border counties were buying up north already. People further away didn't have as much of an incentive to travel cross border pre-MUP - but now they do.

    Life ain't always empty.

Worth going up north for most of the Festive shopping even without the alcohol deals tbh.

This article was also released today

"The report said the scheme had a positive impact on health outcomes, including addressing alcohol-related health inequalities but warned it had a limited impact on the most harmful drinkers."

"This includes a strong focus on preventing people from developing alcohol problems in the first place alongside urgent action to combat the 40% reduction in access to specialist alcohol services over the last decade."

Education for prevention and services for people who need it. Don't think anyone has an issue paying a little more if the money went back into healthcare and services. It's still the same problems after all these years

Never once been up North but I will be this Xmas, not a single cent will be spent on alcohol here. Same as the perpetually increasing tobacco price, it's been about 3 years since I bought a single Irish government sponsored tobacco product - they took it beyond the limits I'm willing to pay so it's black market all the way.

Well worth it - the "First and Last " off licence is not even 2km over the border - I did Maynooth to the off licence in 1 hour 12 minutes on Saturday morning door to door. It can take me a half hour to get to Tescos in Maynooth on a bad traffic day!!!!! And Lidl in Newry is 10 minutes from the off licence if you want the really cheap stuff!!!

What is the nearest off license in the North to Mayo ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,299 ✭✭✭✭ArmaniJeanss

Probably Eniskillen if you are looking for a decent choice of big supermarkets. Or for something nearer (but likely a bit dearer because it will just be small independents and Spars) then Belcoo seems the actual closest.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,548 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Just shows that those people had no interest in going North. Assuming that they made a mistake about the price is calling them stupid.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,376 ✭✭✭celt262

There is definitely bargains to be had with the drink but be careful with the food if anything it is dearer up north.

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,334 ✭✭✭bladespin

Absolutely, the best 'hack' is to check the card specials and wait until there's something particularly good.

  • Registered Users Posts: 685 ✭✭✭GSBellew

I find McGeoughs cheaper for Beer than the First and Last, better wine selection in the First and Last most of the time, easy for me as it is only up the road.

I know people planning on driving from Waterford to stock up for Christmas after getting stung last year after MUP.

Has MUP worked? I know that I have not spent a cent on alcohol from a shop or off sales in the ROI since it came in so on paper it will certainly have, but the bottle of wine that I used to buy in Tesco for dinner on a Saturday has just been replaced by one from up North instead.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,205 ✭✭✭BlueSkyDreams

How does that work out overall with fuel charges to drive up and back, out of interest?

  • Registered Users Posts: 14,306 ✭✭✭✭elperello

It all depends on where you live.

Just Google the round trip distance to where you want to shop and figure out the fuel bill.

You can add a bit for wear and tear and incidentals like lunch etc.

If you can tie it in with a bit of business or sightseeing all the better.

  • Registered Users Posts: 20,548 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

Exactly how did they get stung? MUP started in January 2022, so they had all year to figure out the prices.

People who didn't know the in's and out's of MUP may have assumed that Christmas 2022 would have the usual '24 Carlsberg for €18' offers in the supermarkets, regardless of the 'new tax'. Seeing as that had happened every other Christmas this century. And were taken aback when it didn't happen.

We should never assume that just because us nerds know the intricate details of a story that everyone else does as well.

I've definitely had a few people tell me that this year they are definitely going 'up north'. Though truthfully I suspect in the end most of them won't get around to it and I'll see them in Dunnes around 23/12 with multiple trays stacked on trolleys.
