Think I saw a few days ago Mickelson wasn't playing the matchplay.

Neither Noren nor Harmon picked up enough points to move past Seamus this week, so he has held onto 48th place in the world rankings.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭abff

That’s correct. The cut off was based on last week’s world rankings and 64 of the top 69 players in the rankings have entered. The five players who qualified but will not compete are Cameron Smith, Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, Harris English and Phil Mickelson.

Having said that, I have had another look at the rankings and Seamus will not move ahead of Mickelson in the rankings unless he picks up at least half a point in his three group stage matches. And players close behind him who get through to the knockout stages could leapfrog Seamus.

So the chances of Seamus making this year’s Masters are still up in the air, but it’s looking more likely than not at this stage.

I was watching drive to survive yesterday and wondering what sort of stories they'll be using for the golf version. This sort of thing could be it!

Seamus is with Cantlay, Im and Mitchell for the matchplay. Tricky on paper but this tournament is always tough to predict.

Is this the last weekend to make the cut off for the top 50 for The Masters or does it go right up until the Texas Open the week before?

    Free Palestine 🇵🇸

That's a pity. It probably will be the type of thing they'll look for. Or certainly someone struggling to keep their card.

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭abff

Yes. This is the last tournament before the cut off.

I think Seamus can go quite well in this tournament. He’s on record saying he loves matchplay and it isn’t a format that suits everyone. Cantlay will be some test for him and as we’ve seen in the Ryder Cup he loves the pressure but I think his form has been patchy and Seamus should fancy his chances.

Will Mickelson not playing the Masters help to get him in?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭abff

No, it won’t make any difference. Its whether or not Seamus will be in the top 50 in next Monday’s world rankings that will determine whether or not he gets an invite to play in the Masters.

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,657 ✭✭✭Xander10

If Mickelson is in the top 50 will that open up 51st for the masters?

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,723 ✭✭✭abff

No. Unlike the Matchplay, where they go down below 64th to fill the field if any of the top 64 decide not to play, it’s only players in the top 50 at the cut off point next Monday who will be invited, along with those who were in the top 50 in the year end rankings last December or those who satisfy the other criteria (winners of majors, etc.). Obviously, there will be a lot of overlap between the different categories.

Shaymie 2 up after 4 against Sun jay IM so a win there would lock up his spot I believe

  • Registered Users Posts: 305 ✭✭Scrabbel

Keeping it nice and steady after 11. If he can close this out it’d be a great start. Does anyone know if 1 win would be enough to stay Top 50?

Too many variables at the moment I'd imagine to be certain of anything.

3 up and absolutely burning it up

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭Rigor Mortis

    4 up, 5 to play

    Wins 5 & 4.

Great win, will go a big deal to securing the Augusta invite

Comfortable enough. Enjoys match play . Might be one for the next Ryder Cup. God knows, we need some new options

    5&4 v world no.26. Now that’s a great win.

Apparently only needed 1 point to guarantee his place. Nosferatu posted it on Twitter yesterday and he seems to be very on the ball with these things (has had tour players quoting him in interviews).

Edit; he actually had a follow up post to say not guaranteed with 1 point, but would be very unlucky if it was’t enough.

Just saw Seamus' result there, delighted. He'll be full of confidence tomorrow now, great stuff.

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,777 ✭✭✭Panrich

Looking at last year, another half point would put him ahead of Mickelson and would get him there for sure. He's going to be buzzing having got a point on the board on his first attempt and that really takes some pressure off for the other two games.

I think the point he earned last night pretty much guarantees that Seamus will move ahead of Mickelson in next week’s rankings. Players who finished on 1 point after the group stages in each of the last two WGC Matchplay Championships earned a fraction over 2 world ranking points and a similar outcome can be expected this time around.

Seamus currently has a total of 95.60 world ranking points versus 95.79 for Phil. Both have played 42 tournaments over the (COVID adjusted) 2 year counting period. This leaves Seamus’s average world ranking points marginally behind Phil’s at 2.2761 vs 2.2806. But the adjustment factor that is applied to points earned more than 3 months previously has been reducing Phil’s total points by around 2 each week, while Seamus’s adjusted points total has been reducing by less than 1 per week on average.

Therefore, Seamus’s adjusted points total next week is likely to be around 1 point higher than Phil’s before we add any points earned by Seamus this week. If we add the minimum of 2 points or thereabouts that Seamus is already guaranteed from last night’s win, his adjusted points total will be almost exactly 3 more than Phil’s. Seamus’s divisor will have gone up from 42 to 43, while Phil’s will have remained unchanged at 42. But the 3 points difference will more than compensate for the increase in divisor as their current average is just over 2.2.

I know that the above margins are relatively small, but there is enough wiggle room in the calculations for me to be able to say with certainty that Seamus will be ahead of Phil in next week’s rankings. Will this guarantee Seamus a place in the Masters? No, it won’t. But it provides an extra safety margin as it would now need 4 people to overtake him in the rankings in order for him to drop out of the top 50.

That's the updated list after round 1. Seamus went to 45 after his win only to be passed by Cam Young after he won. Obviously a worst case scenario for Seamus would be something like Fleetwood, Garcia, Noren etc. all having a great run and picking up lots of points. If he wins today he will be in a strong position to qualify.

Big match against Cantlay today. He can lock up entry to knockout stages with another good showing today.

Not quite. He will have 2 points and will knock Cantlay out but the other 2 in the group could still reach 2 or 2.5 depending on the how their match goes and the final round of matches.
