Must've heard 'Loyal to Me' at least 6 times on Nova at this stage. I have to say it is a very catchy song but hearing it on Nova would've been unthinkable a few years back.

Radio Nova won the classic rock license for Dublin and its commuter belt. That being the case, a couple of questions come to mind. Why would you have a show called The Friday Rock Show, when it is supposed to be playing rock music anyway? Why is one of Radio Nova's digital stations called Classic Rock, when that is what Radio Nova was licensed for anyway? Pat James was "relegated" to Radio Nova Classic Rock - is he the only presenter on that digital station, i.e. is the rest of its music all automated? Here's a thought: if Radio Nova wants to branch out musically from its license, surely its digital stations can do that rather than the opposite! Perhaps, John Clarke could have a non-rock jukebox on a digital station, for example his soul collection! Instead of a digital station called Classic Rock, you could have one called Classic Soul!

That all makes total common sense, but when were Nova into common sense? :pac:

Pat James is an embarrassment to nova...he,s not what Hayes wants ...Pat was a huge thorn in the side of Hayes vision and wanted him out..Branigan chose to do what he was told and get rid of Pat ....to the digital basement....Listeners to Pats show will notice new listeners from all over the world now contacting the show through the web....he,s getting bigger than nova...just my opinions...;)

Declan forgive me if I am wrong but I thank PJ is on Radio Nova Extra and he was saying before he went off air on the FM side of thing they were going to build the station up online with more shows and presenters. This does not seem to be the case as I am not aware of any other shows - I totally agree with the digital stations they should have more variety as to me whats the difference between a digital station when you can have your own Spotify playlist or listen to someone else.

I heard Tony saying many a time on the The Friday Night Rock show that the show is named in tribute to The Friday Rock Show which was presented by Tommy Vance on BBC radio 1 a show I listened to myself growing up in the 70's.

Terrible pity PJ is not back on FM I work nights and miss his show I like Kieran McGuinness but the variety and style of music is just not there.

Hi Peter, Yes guilty as charged I did present NiteMoves on Nova for a year, & Christmas FM, & I hope to secure a show on Christmas FM for this year's run of broadcasting entilted "Christmas Nites". I love radio production & presentation but
get board quickly, plenty of new radio projects coming up in 2019. You can stream via Bluetooth from your mobile to a stand alone speaker in your car, from the stations website.

Pat James did announce it as Radio Nova Extra but it ended up staying as Radio Nova Classic Rock. I did not know that Tony's show was named as a tribute to Tommy Vance's show of the same name, but I do remember Tommy's show as I used to listen to it from time to time!

For those who don't have a Times subscription here is the full article!
Second report recommends Radio Nova to go national
Core’s Chief Investment Officer Eddie O’Mahony says the best option for the BAI in future plans to create more radio outside Dublin is to take Radio Nova national.

In an independent report, published in August, Core says the BAI has two clear options – create a new radio license for outside of Dublin area, or offer a franchise area extension to an existing Dublin station to extend it to areas outside Dublin.

It says creating a new FM licence for outside the Dublin area with a brief for an alternative genre will in our view not be a commercially viable option based on costs, ongoing investment and problems with not being available in Dublin itself.

“We firmly believe that the only viable option is to extend the franchise area of a Dublin station. As a specialised rock music service, Radio Nova has a proven track record in Dublin and is well positioned to offer a real alternative to listeners in a wider area in a commercially viable way. They have a tried and tested format that is succeeding in the market and worked and delivers for audiences and advertisers.” the “Listen Up: Our View On The Radio Market” report says.

Nova has made no secret of its ambitions to broadcast nationally and has made detailed submissions to the BAI in the last 12 months. The station claims it will create new jobs and bring a new radio service to some 1.7M people outside Dublin, should the BAI give it permission to extend its signals beyond the Dublin area.

Core predicts that, with competition remaining fierce for spend and listeners over the coming year, it is prudent to minimise the impact any decisions will have on existing services. However, the costs in setting up a new radio station and the ongoing investment required for marketing will not be a commercially viable option, according to O’Mahony.

“This is the second independent report that recommends the extension of Radio Nova’s broadast territory. The BAI’s own consultant, Mediatique, has already recommended the extension of an existing specialist broadcaster outside Dublin to the Authority; now, the largest media buyer in the Irish market has done so too. This is apart from our own independent research that shows that more than 90% of people outside Dublin want more radio choice”, says Nova CEO Kevin Branigan.

“The body of opinion that recommends the national rollout of Radio Nova is becoming; first our own independent research, next the BAI’s own consultant, now Core, the largest spender on media in the country”, says Branigan.

The BAI is expected to announce at least one new radio service for outside Dublin in the coming months.

Branigan says the extension of Nova to the more populated cities and areas of Ireland would bring a new, well-funded specialist service to 1.7M more people and would satisfy all of the BAI’s strategic objectives. Nova would create up to 10 new jobs in the process. “We could be broadcasting quasi-nationally within two months of receiving the go-ahead from the BAI”.

The BAI is expected to announce its plan for new radio licences in October.

Do you like those three singers I named? None of them are classic rock but they've all been played on Nova in recent times.

"a specialised rock music service" is what I have problems with - they are now no more a specialised rock music service than a daffodil!
