Mad sport this. 4 years of hard training only to be assigned an absolute dud of a horse, or a horse who's not feeling particularly arsed on the day.

I'm sure it's been said before but the fella on RTE commentating on the basketball with all his americanisms and whooping is headwrecking

That's Timmy McCarthy. He's got a cult following and is not oblivious to the way he commentates. He is very deliberate in doing it that way and I personally find it both humourous and entertaining.

Think it has a lot to do with the jockey too - it's interesting that both Natalya and Arthur went clear in the showjumping

23 seconds behind the bronze but 11 others between him and 3rd . It's a near impossible task surely

What is he like in the last event? Yesterday the Polish girl was leading but came 3rd. It's an exciting final event, if you can follow what's going on!

I really wouldn't know enough (anything!) about it to give an opinion, but it would be nice to see him make a few places up the table to maybe a top 10. Dunno how likely though ...

Shame to see Tom Daley out of the diving. Sure he's only about 12 so he'll be around for a while yet! he was devastated though:(

They said on rte he is strong at it. I don't know how long the course is. The women done 3x 800 metre laps last night and as someone said the leader did end up dropping to 3rd. Let's hope for something special from him. Starting around 10 or so

The Lithuanian woman who won in London was eliminated in the riding part, as was another athlete with the same horse. She subsequently ran the fastest time for the running/shooting. She got zero for the riding though, so finished nowhere overall. Seems a bit harsh that if the riding is your weakest event, or you don't get a good horse, you get no points, whereas if you are weak at the other disciplines you are guaranteed a score in them.

    What time is the running/shooting?

Was just looking back at the 2012 results from London. From what I can see he was 25th going into the final x-country/shooting competition there and that's where he finished. But you'd hope he's better and stronger 4 years down the line, so anything's possible. It seems athletes can move up and lose many places over the final rounds so top 10 sounds very plausible at a minimum.

    10.
Loved the women's! What a fun event! I'd love to try something like that. I run a lot and went shooting once and was really good at it. But there's nowhere really you could give it a lash!

4 x 800 metre laps I think. The winner of the women's started in 7th and overcame a 45 second deficit.

Does sound a hell of a lot of fun and great variety to break up the monotony. But I saw ALOK's weekly itinerary printed on one of the websites and let's just say there weren't many blank spaces in it. To try and master one event is impressive. To try five is almost bordering on lunacy I believe!

London as far as I recall was 3x 1 k runs for men and women... Last night I think it was 3 x 800 for the women... Standards are dropping

I detest that soccer football, but the taikwando (as the only alternative I have) is absolute nonsense.

Hmmm, would I go that far? Not sure but have loved the badminton these Games, definitely the surprise package for me. Today's final was awesome, incredible rallies all the way through. I thought watching Scott Evans was great, but this was several levels above.

Next to no black athletes in this event. Can't recall seeing many in any Olympic pentathlon.
