Come on Dan indeed. What a boost it would be to get an unexpected medal on day 1

I turned on telly expecting to be watching badminton already which I thought was always on first day of the Games! Feel a bit thrown out by that to be honest. So it's just Dan Martin and the men's hockey team for Ireland today then? Nice way to ease us into the Games I guess.

According to RTE:https://www.rte.ie/sport/olympics/2016/0805/807302-irish-in-action-olympics-day-1/ we have a few other competitors in action today

Dan's a real chance for a medal here. Looking forward to this. Beats days of stages. One off who's the best!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Is it much of a disadvantage that he only has one teammate with him where the likes of Tony Martin or Valverde have 4 or even in some cases 5? Or does it make any difference at all in this format?

It's a long stage. Close to 250 ks. I think the more team with you has to be an advantage.

Don't think the team has the same leader/domestique structure as pro cycling so guys are not just there to protect the leader.

Yes that's true. It's not nominally a team event, but I would just think that if you have a country with 5 or 6 competitors and they do decide to race as a team with one individual in mind, it would confer a fairly significant advantage.

For prelims the times are perfect, but really, it's the finals that we all want. Generally 0200 onwards for swim and track.

How do they decide who starts at the front on the road race?

Given that a Brit and a Kazakh won the time trial and road race at the last Olympics, I think there is some etiquette letting those nations set off first. it means nothing, though, in the overall sense of the race.

The last couple of hours will be action packed.

Sanita Puspure going now on RTE2

    Puspure really struggling, disappointing start.

Safely through in third (First 3 qualify for the Quarter Finals)

That river looked extremely choppy, the rowers were struggling to stay in their lanes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Puspure pulled it back when needed again. Hard to know what to make of these races though.

Good start for Ireland in the eventing, a 46.8 score in dressage from Padraig McCarthy on Simon Portloe.

Amhran na bhFiann was played for the Irish hockey team : I was expecting Ireland's Call for some reason.

Anyone else having trouble with RTE's online coverage. Was working earlier on the laptops but not at all now? Phone App is glitchy but in general works though.

He was.....pretty sure Ireland's Call is played at home hockey matches.

I suppose though the tricolour and Irish anthem are the 'official' flag and anthem of the Olympic team and that's why it was played, even though the Olympic team is an all Ireland one.

Btw RTE News Now on the digital platform are showing loads of live stuff as an alternative to RTE2.

    Lost 3-2 in the Hockey

India had more of the game, but Ireland will be disappointed not to earn a draw at the end.

A decent performance against a team ranked #5 in the World.

He was asked this on Off The Ball a week or two ago. He said he wouldn't do any serious media work for the Olympics unless he had the time to do the research on the competitors and he just doesn't have the time these days what with fixing people's bodies and all that carry on.

The reason I ask is because I am enjoying their commentary - would'nt mind seeing RTÉ get the big Tour races and these boys commentating.

Some race. Glad the long time leader got a medal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

On the BBC they were calling it that there'd be trouble on that final descent and they were spot on. Dramatic stuff. Glad the Polish guy held on for a medal in the end.

Britain's Adam Peaty blew his own 100 breast WR away in a heat today.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,076 ✭✭✭Dan man

Danish athletes constantly amaze me by their fighting qualities and ability to deliver medals if they are in with a sniff. Makes me envy to see similarly small countries to our own do so well across a range of sports and deliver a haul of medals. That's why I always cringe when I see our media and indeed our own athletes talk about us punching above our weight and taking over the world in sports. It's so far off the mark.

And the "Iron Lady" Hosszhu just .13 off the WR in the 400 medley, she'll surely nail it the next day!
