You don't have to watch the BBC if don't like.

They are entitled to be smug. I would, and so would Rte, if we say Ireland won 8-10 medals

Agree 100%. It can be annoying to watch but we would do exactly the same, and rightly so.

Katie had mentioned that she has had a horrible year in her personal life.
She intimated that the interviewer knew what she meant. Lots of people in the media and in Bray knew what had happened. Kenneth Egan has stated that she was not 'in a happy place' at the moment. Guess people were staying schtum for Katie's sake before her match. When there is a family break up in normal circumstances, it is heartbreaking for so many people involved, but, it is even worse in Katie's case, as it has clearly affected her boxing for the past few months. Absolutely cruel if her father's carry-on has deprived her of her gold medal, as so many commentators maintained that Katie was not fighting at her best in that final.

    Definitely not a non-story.

Why was he not in her corner? He could have been if he had not participated in 'these things happen' activities. I feel so sorry for Katie.
She keeps changing her phone number so her father can't contact her. A lot of pain there. Trying to deflect from his own sleazy part in her sad story
by going to the press with his complaints re training/coaches, correct though these might be.

It's clear that Taylor has not boxed at all well this year and that she has been seriously distracted by her family issues. The fact that her father is no longer her coach has be affecting her performance too.

Anything here is only hearsay and conjecture and there's a sense of voyeurism about it. I don't think it's fair to be discussing such topics on a thread about the Olympics. Katie obviously doesn't want a public discussion on it.

Maybe Ireland can partly lay claim to the following gold medal winners - Jason Kenny, Paul Bennett, Joseph Clarke, Ed Clancy, Crista Cullen, George Nash all British - Ryan Murphy, Conor Dryer USA -Kim Brennan, Cate Campbell, Bronte Campbell Australia plus Joe Joyce going for gold in boxing

One simple thing that has been overlooked is that Billy Walsh was never actually replaced by the suits. All of the workload was put on Zaur even though he is only a technical boxing coach, not a team manager. It's probably not a surprise that everything has unravelled.

That's a valid and fair point.

Personal reasons, no need to be discussed here

Why not?? If they had an effect on Katie's performance, it's open season. He himself has gone to the press. Katie mentioned in her
heartbreaking post-match interview that she has had a lot of trouble in her personal life during the past year. At the time, I thought
she might have had a broken romance, and was rather surprised as she seemed to devote all her time to her boxing.

Later in the week, I was in Bray and learnt the true story. Was raging today when I heard on the radio that he had given an interview
to the Indo. When I saw how he was ambushed at the airport by 'The Irish Daily Star', telling the cameraman to 'Get the camera away
from me before I ****ing knock you down', I presumed he subsequently went to Vincent Hogan to speak about Katie. I wonder how
she felt when she heard about it. The comments after the Indo article are not very sympathetic to Pete Taylor, to put it mildly.

    e.g.,

    Hmmmmmm:

'If he wants a full and frank discussion on his daughter's frailty, he cannot gloss over the changed circumstances of their
relationship. If a boxer's mental state is not 100%, they are on the back foot....Yes, Billy Walsh was greatly missed but
the angle this interview lets Pete Taylor take is wrong. You weren't there for her Pete. Man up and admit it cost her.'

    haribo:

'It is a bit crass of him to give an interview in this fashion. It shows very little consideration for his daughter.'

Frankly, I think it is revolting for Pete Taylor to be looking for sympathy when it is Katie who deserves it.

Pete said something today in the Indo about 'family issues' and that he has had no contact with Katie, so we haven't really discussed something here that is not in the public domain.

Perhaps not, but for him to go public having a go at those who were left to take over is irresponsible and hypocritical if he wants to keep it private.

    For sure!

Except those who go blabbing to the tabloids when it suits them.

How did Katie feel when she heard that her father was blabbing to the press?
I doubt she knew as she has changed her number so he can't contact her.

    Fair enough.

Was originally replying to a post on this thread.
The question re KT's father was asked much earlier on. Even though I knew the answer, I did not reply.
But as he has gone to the press himself, it is not voyeurism to comment. It's extremely likely that his
behaviour has influenced his daughter's performance, hence, it is relevant to discuss it, IMO.

But, as this is a thread re the actual Olympics I shall not comment on it any further.

Edit: Thank you PeterTheNinth for getting me into trouble, haha!! ;)

I think the vast majority of the commentators on the BBC are grand and have greater technical knowledge than Rte, I just think Claire Balding is a bit over the top

I think we'll have a decent showing in 2020. There are much better facilities and systems in place in Irish sport now. The Institute is a fantastic place, rowing and sailing and others are really getting their act together. Boxing can hit back. I'd be quite hopeful for the future anyway.

Great to see medals going to water sports! Annalise getting her silver medal
    was the highlight for me.

That's why I wish the Olympics was every 2-3 years.

I know it's not realistically possible, but for me it's hard to beat it.

It is. The winter games are in 2 years, which outside the lack of Irish interest, is just as awesome and gripping.

I suppose the one bonus next summer is that the World Athletics Championships will have the feel of an Olympic Games, being held in the Olympic Stadium in London and in front of a full house for every event.

Quite true. Sochi was the first WO I watched in any significant way and I was gripped all the way through. Roll on the 2018 speed skating, an absolutely brilliant sport to watch.

Thing is that all of these sports have big competitions every year but we just don't see them.

I think it's amazing that there's such high viewing figures for the Olympics but these sports aren't considered good enough to make it onto our screens for the next four years.

It's very hard for the minority sports to compete with the big ones. Even sports like swimming and diving have very little of an audience outside of the Olympics.

It would be nice to think the dedicated sports channels might dedicate more airtime to sports like badminton and track cycling but they seem to prefer filling their dead time with Premier League repeats and boring interviews. At least Eurosport does tip its cap the odd time, although monster truck racing and 20 hours of snooker daily are not to everyone's taste!

    How are his medal chances?

I think it's one of those things where "it's not on because people don't watch it and people don't watch it because it's not on"

Sometimes you have to take a chance and let an audience develop. The Olympic figures show that there's at least interest in the product.

In fairness to the mess that has been rio, they've been great at keeping things ticking over at a good pace with very little of those boring pauses between races/whatever.

When commentator said he's second overall, does he mean the jumping or the overall competition? And why is Ryle Nugent commentating on the pentathlon?

Pretty sure it's currently has the most points, but with others still to get them.
why is Ryle Nugent commentating on the pentathlon anything ?
    Fixed that for you...
He's always enthusiastic when commentating but just hasn't a clue what he's on about.

    He's like a nasal two year-old.

Ah got it now...2nd but 16 riders to go. I'm not a member of the Ryle fan club, but dont mind him because whenever I want to watch rugby, it won't be on RTE. Never heard him on any other sport before or on these Olympics previously. Thought Robert Hall was doing all the horsey stuff there.
