I haven't read the Taylor article yet, but can't see how he could know that the lads were over-trained? And what is over-trained? It's a word that is bandied about with next to no context. From every fight I saw I don't see it. Imagine saying to MC, well done, hard luck, but it was the over-training as much as the judges that cost you.

A bit rich coming from him!

Why is he not in Katie's corner any more?

I'd doubt very much it's the case that they all headed off to Rio and just forgot about Katie Taylor. And not really sure with 7 boxers travelling that one coach should have stayed behind just because it didn't suit Katie to go with them. I would imagine contingency plans were made, discussions were had with her and some training plan put in place. It's stretching credulity to think otherwise.

Perhaps not, but for him to go public having a go at those who were left to take over is irresponsible and hypocritical if he wants to keep it private.

If folks analyse and break it down and take their ridiculous OTT 'everyone's a cheat' hat off then yes, kind if unwarranted.

I guess people, including the likes of Sonia O'Sullivan and David Gillick, would be of the opinion that when your coach is caught with a suitcase full of drugs, we have entered the realm of warranted suspicion. But she could "only" finish 3rd last night so everything's ok now.

This carry on has to stop. It only makes the Irish look like sore losers. The world is not stupid and we don't need our competing athletes repeatedly pointing out the doubts about the athletes/countries that finish ahead of them. I can't compliment Tom Barr enough for his incredible performances but even he couldn't resist it. However, at least in his case he could claim that if doping was a factor in him not medalling that he could have been directly affected having been so close. Am I right in saying we had a swimmer come in last place and go off on a similar tirade? For me, that's not on.

Fiona Doyle was asked about a Russian swimmer who has failed two doping tests, and was also caught up in the meldonium issue earlier this year, and gave her honest answer that she felt she shouldn't be there. She was asked again some time later and endorsed her earlier statement. I don't have any issue with that, but I guess we all look at things from different perspectives.

Shame about Leona's finish yesterday. She's started well today, 3 birdies in first 6 holes. Tied 15th currently.

Liam Heath. Single Kayak sprint. Great race.

Hmm, Liam...wonder if he has an Irish grandmother :p
    Too late anyway, though :(

Incredible medal haul for GB (or Great Britain and Northern Ireland as I heard a Beeb commentator actually say last night for once) all right. Wonder what percentage of their competitors medalled

Think they have 61 medals. Need 66 to surpass London. First time any host nation topped their medal tally in the Olympics immediately after their hosting if they get 66 here in Rio.

I thought there were definite questions about the fitness of Paddy Barnes, Joe Ward and Katie Taylor in their fights.

Something clearly is amiss.....when when there ever any issues about fitness or conditioning of Irish boxers at recent Olympic Games?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,453 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Come off it. Ward has always had issues about his conditioning, plus his loss was very little to do with conditioning. Katie has looked more tired in plenty of other winning fights, and that includes with Pete in her corner. Barnes, I don't entertain that. Barnes was telling anyone that would listen than he was the gold medal winner. He then fights a tremendous scrap, even probably over-cooking it, and after come the excuses and red herrings. No, Pete and the over-training angles is just lazy and clutching.

So you reckon nothing went wrong in Rio, bar Taylor and Conlan being unfairly marked? To me, something didn't feel at all right compared to Beijing and London and I thought Zaur Antia had the look of a haunted man at ringside.

A lot went wrong in my opinion . I have listed the issues I saw as not good on the boxing threads. My posts here today are specifically relating to Pete Taylor's over-training claim. I don't buy it, and posted why!

You could say that what didn't look right compared to London and Rio was us not getting the decisions on close bouts. MORs drugs issue may likely have caused AIBAs judges not to be too eager to give us 'the rub of the green,' which is understandable. MOR damaged the sport, no doubt. I think he was the only drugs fail to date from the 280 + qualified boxers. Sticking out like a sore thumb, and painting us in a bad light.

Staggering that Britain have won 25 gold medals, second behind the USA. If you take away swimming, they have won more golds than any other country. They have won golds in 14 different sports and medals in 22 different sports, more than any other country. Back in 1996, Britain won 1 gold compared to Ireland's 3.
If only Claire Balding and some others weren't so obnoxiously smug

You don't have to watch the BBC if don't like.

They are entitled to be smug. I would, and so would Rte, if we say Ireland won 8-10 medals

Just down in the shop this morning, Pete Taylor is all over the front pages of some of the tabloids. Something like "Pete Sorry For Katie" or the like. I'll have a look for it on the interweb.

Katie had mentioned that she has had a horrible year in her personal life.
She intimated that the interviewer knew what she meant. Lots of people in the media and in Bray knew what had happened. Kenneth Egan has stated that she was not 'in a happy place' at the moment. Guess people were staying schtum for Katie's sake before her match. When there is a family break up in normal circumstances, it is heartbreaking for so many people involved, but, it is even worse in Katie's case, as it has clearly affected her boxing for the past few months. Absolutely cruel if her father's carry-on has deprived her of her gold medal, as so many commentators maintained that Katie was not fighting at her best in that final.

The word "tabloids" say it all. A non-story.

    Definitely not a non-story.

Tom Daley aiming to make the 10m platform diving final tonight. He goes in the semi at 3. A super event. Hope he makes it. It's even better than the 3 metre springboard.

There's an interview with him in the Indo where he says all the boxers look tired and overtrained, that they were not getting the right guidance from their corners, and he gives out that all the high performance coaches went over with the male boxers and Katie was left without a coach for a week

Why was he not in her corner? He could have been if he had not participated in 'these things happen' activities. I feel so sorry for Katie.
She keeps changing her phone number so her father can't contact her. A lot of pain there. Trying to deflect from his own sleazy part in her sad story
by going to the press with his complaints re training/coaches, correct though these might be.

It's clear that Taylor has not boxed at all well this year and that she has been seriously distracted by her family issues. The fact that her father is no longer her coach has be affecting her performance too.

It's a fair point, he's far from blameless in the predicament in which she currently finds herself.

    'These things happen'. :(

A euphemism for someone doing the dirty on his/her partner.

One simple thing that has been overlooked is that Billy Walsh was never actually replaced by the suits. All of the workload was put on Zaur even though he is only a technical boxing coach, not a team manager. It's probably not a surprise that everything has unravelled.
