Niall Sheridan was the Longford man you were talking about. Overweight but was great target man with proper service.
Think Geoffrey McGonagle might be the derry forward you are thinking of.

You're on the money, could'nt for the life of me think of that lad's name, fine footballer. If he lost a few pounds he could have been unreal.

    Bang on, on both.

Specialist subject on mastermind, obscure footballers of yesteryear :D

"An arse like a bag of cement". He was a wild drinker apparently. Unsurprisingly given the shape of him!

Played hurling for Derry too if I remember correctly.

You'd never describe Dara O'Sé as elegant, but he was the finest midfielder of his generation.

Lads, while I think the discussion is a great one (jaysis, Geoffrey McGonagle was a blast from the past), what do ye think of making it into its own thread?

Poor choice of words, gifted footballer but didn't look the part is what I meant

Lets not forget the GAA king of the bellies, although it was the small ball, Niall Paterson

Yeah if you saw him in a club game youd say he was some big halion they roped in to make up a team and couldnt find a pair of shorts or jersey to fit him. Until the first time you saw him on the ball

    Michael Dara McCauley?

For some reason I always think he has his tongue sticking out the side of his mouth when he's running with the ball..like a thick kid doing a maths question

MDMcA being called an excellent footballer and being mentioned in the same company as Brian Dooher.

    Jesus wept.

Back then a massive hoop on a forward was handy for bumping a full back out the road

I agree, although he was as slow as a tortoise but made up for it with a great kicking style and the strength to win his own ball.

I do remember an amusing Sunday Game live show where Spillane in the pre-match discussion went on a rant about how Corkery was clearly overweight and unfit and shouldn't be on the pitch (in fairness Corkery had definitely put on a few pounds) and of course Colin Corkery then went on to give an exhibition of effortless points scoring off left and right. Put Pat back in his box big time!

List is fine apart from the fact McDonald is at two. The most over rated footballer of our generation, people seem to forget he was a laughing stock in Mayo and disliked/booed by his own fans for years before he had one good game against Dublin.

Don't think anyone mentioned Declan Browne. The things he could do with a football was just ridiculous! One of the greatest I've seen in the flesh.

    Ill start with Brian Dooher.

    What looked awful about Dooher?

Mcdonald was never laughed at in Mayo. Its just a few dicks that give him hassle. You don't have a clue what you are on about. He was an unreal talent that served Mayo for years. He had many good games in the green and red. It just people expected him to win every game for mayo. It a team game not tennis.

Totally forgot about him. We were searching for Mayo blood in him!!! :)

Was it in the 2008 final that he scored that wonder point from over on the Cusack side into the Hill?

He scored a better one in that game where he made a fool out of Killian Young.
