I still can't believe so many people ran against him for the Presidential election.

He wasn't even favourite until Norris dropped out.

Nah to me it was always Michael D's to lose

Norris was well ahead in the polls until the mudslinging started

Norris was ahead in some polls but he was far from a sure thing. Honestly in person he's actually a very odd eccentric person and not in the least bit presidential, glad Michael D got it.

Michael D was so confident he let the others have a head start

Was Séan Gallagher not the odds on favourite until the debacle on the RTÉ debate?

The only thing he was in line to win was the "Greatest spoofer on the planet" award.

Correct. His odds were as low as 1/4 and he was polling well in front.

No fault to Sean Gallagher but he wouldn't have been a great choice for president.

If Higgins wants to go for a second term I think we should just let him. Scrap campaigning and an election.

Nobody will run against him I would imagine.

You'd think, but there's some strange eggs out there.

Has he not already said he won't be running for a second term?

Actually I'm sure Dana will come out of hibernation again.

He did when he was elected but recently he's said a few things that sound like he's thinking about going again. He's a fair old age at this stage so who knows what could change in the next 2 years.

He hasn't decided. Nobody would run against him as they wouldn't secure the necessary criteria for a nomination.

The only stumbling block between him and a second term is his age. Whilst a figure head role, it does put demands on your time and requires energy and dedication. The body and mind have to both be up to scratch and, given he turns 76 in spring, a second term would run well into his eighties.

There's also the very realistic possibility that he could die in office. I doubt he'll seek a second term.

He's as sharp as ever and the role isn't overly demanding in comparison to an actual political role. I'd say he'll run again and be president into his 80s. I'd take a 90 year old Higgins with a loose grasp on reality over Gallagher or Norris any day of the week.

We should amend the constitution to specifically ban Dana from running for any kind of office.

I'd be more worried that last time out she got 2.9% and the time before that she got 13.8%. There's people out there that voted for her.

I'd be more concerned about McGuinness getting 13.7%

There's always going to be people who vote the likes of McGuiness because they think it'll eventually lead to a "United Ireland". What's the reason for voting for Dana? She won Eurovision twice?

Well given the president of Ireland has no power anyone voting on the basis of it leading eventually to a United Ireland is as thick as anyone voting for Dana. In my opinion.

Dana wouldn't have been the best ambassador for the country, to put it lightly, but I'd have taken her over McGuinness.

Dana is a religious loon so people who identify with that could be convinced to vote for her.

McGuiness is a homicidal loon....same argument I guess

    Elon Musk is some boyo

Would be amazing if it happened within our lifetimes but I can see this still being a pipe dream a long time down the road.

Well his timeline has the first Mars flights in 2023!

To put that in different terms, Ardie Savea might still be playing for New Zealand when the first flights go if he's right!

    What did he do now?

    What did he do now?

Released some details of his plans for SpaceX to go to Mars. Wants to sent a manned mission in the next decade.

I think he's a great guy and we'd be better off with a few more Elon Musks in the world but seems wildly optimistic. The video they released also hinted at terraforming Mars at the end. I don't believe there's any chance of this being close to possible within my lifetime.

It's not a pipe dream tbf. There's been plenty of craft sent to Mars already. Sending a person is the logical next step.
