I once traveled to an Island called Gili Trawangan. It's about a kilometre wide, beaches on all sides. Hardly any roads, no cars, cops or dogs. To get there I had to get a 4 hour van across Bali - which itself is a fairly isolated Island on the Indonesian archipelago - but that isn't important. The van dropped us at this last port. From there we boarded a fast ferry, 8 200 horsepower outboard motors and it still took us about 90 minutes to power across to Gili T.

Now coming it was beautiful. You could see beaches and huts, and you just knew it was paradise like. There was no dock on that side. The boat got close and you just waded in. So you walk up the kinda ramp, hours from the nearest proper infrastructure, in the middle of nowhere. A thousand miles from the next Irish speaker. And Bang. Right in front of you. "Tir Na nÓg".
    And there it is :)

Impressive that Klitchko wasn't properly put to sleep by that uppercut. Basically turned him into a giraffe.

Joshua was knocked down by a similarly ludicrously tough looking punch as well. They're both very scary men.

To the normal ear, it is quite hard to distinguish between an Aussie accent and their noisy neighbours

Very much so actually, Dublin taxi drivers invariably get it wrong.

Brolly might be a complete spanner but he's a very entertaining speaker especially outside the RTE studio.

Always listened with a half interest to the reports of spiralling motor insurance costs. Hit home this week when I got my new quote to renew. Full clean licence with no claims for 9+ years. Never had a penalty point.

    €1,355. F*cking hell.

They are definitely in cahoots. My van insurance came in at 640 this year. I rang another crowd who came in the same...I had told them I got a price of 420. I renewed with my original at 640...halfway through the call the other crowd rang and left a message saying they could match the 420!! When I rang my own crowd back with the news that I could get it for 420 they were able to tell me what the other crowds cover didn't include and that they could go to 420 also!!

    Gangsters the lot of them.

2010. Wife is a named driver. Third party, fire and theft only. No windscreen.

They were willing to come down €150 on the phone. Told them no thanks.

Competitor has already quoted me €759 fully comp.

Spoke to a broker who advised that he can get me as low as €680 with Bump but warned of issues that may come with going with a smaller/less established company.

Did you tell them you have twins?

If I did, I'd want the pair of them insured on the car for that money.

Wife as a named driver would actually bring it down.

I had to move this year, after 14 years with one company. I went in and filled out the online quote thing as a new customer and the quote was ?200 cheaper than my renewal. That was the third 20% increase in 3 years, I got it ?400 cheaper with another company. It has since gone down further since I got a new car worth three times the money, go figure.

thats as a result of the fact that the majority of costs paid out by the insurance companies are not for the value of cars, but for medical issues / out of court settlements.

so if you go from a €1K '95 reg to a €10K '12 reg, the likelihood of you being in / causing an accident is lessened... thus the cheaper premium.

I.8 is probably hurting you a little but it is a very big jump. It may be that the company in question is trying to re-balance their book and is just keen to get rid of certain types of customers or re-price them.

Glad you got sorted with a better option. As a word of advice from someone who has worked with (not directly in) the industry, don't necessarily go with the cheapest option. Some of the lower cost operators are genuinely awful to make a claim from and ultimately, if you are going to shell out a rake of cash, it is useful to know that if you have a crash that you are covered. Not suggesting that you allow yourself to be gouged, but like buying a car, don't expect VW performance from a Lada.

I sort of work in insurance with visibility over all different areas. As much as motor is a real pain in the hoop, it has the highest loss ratio of most insurance streams. By that I mean, it makes the least money. You feel like you're getting gouged, but it is actually the claims, legal fees and fraud that are killing the industry.

Silver with flecks of mud brown and a hint of birdsh*t.

I'll list the radio presets later when the inevitable question arrives.

How many letters and numbers are on the license plate and what order are they in?

Indeed. Broker I spoke to could provide me with two cheaper options. One was minimally cheaper than the one I'm going with (from a big name company) and another is a chunk cheaper.

He said if I wanted to go with the one that's a chunk cheaper, that's fine but he'd advise against it. His rationale was that they can be harder to get a payment from, can be very poor to communicate with and there's always the very small chance they'll go belly up.

    8. Reverse alphabetical.

    10-KE.

Only joking. I'd never buy a Kildare registered vehicle.

If it was a KE that might explain the price increase, given the large social and crime issues and general delinquencies associated with Kildare.

The real problem in your case though is that odd numbered Dublin post code you have. :)
