It literally comes down to which version do you believe (There's no evidence yet to support any of them).
But all of the above has been repeated over and over again many times in the 80's and 90's, and never came to anything.
They were looked at by the Gardaí.

This girl/woman speaking is different. She was a victim of a paedophile that the Gardaí may have looked at before, but there was no evidence to move further.
Unrelated to anything or anyone else that the Gardaí had reason to believe might have been involved.
She didn't volunteer to come forward, her name was given by another victim.
I can't imagine that she has any reason to lie, unless she suffered from something similar to Stockholm syndrome for Paedophiles. Which would make even less sense.

Ballyroan is on the route that Cooke would have taken to three rock mountain (or that direction) to adjust aerials (or whatever the f*ck he was doing up there).
    https://goo.gl/maps/ncHakeYpVFv

Cooke acknowledged that Philip was in his car (only to maybe deny it a day later).
The Gardaí believe that they have enough to investigate these allegations further, but may not know the whereabouts of Cookes favourite hiding spots.

If these religious sects/cults operated as free and open as Jim Cairns makes out, then why haven't we heard about many others that died at their hands? Or that are missing, and may have also been taken by them?
I haven't heard of any "quasi-satanic" group member that has been arrested under suspicion of anything (I'm assuming I would remember hearing something like that).

There's no doubt it's far fetched.

Two things stop me dismissing it out of hand.

I was reading another thread here about Philip's disappearance.

Most victims are known to their attackers, and secondly there is a danger of defining cults too narrowly.

That route btw doesnt tally with Ballyroan Road, where Philip's house is, to Collaiste Eanna.

Just out of curiosity, what route would he have normally taken to Coláiste Éanna?
Where is the laneway where the bag was found?

I thought he said that he was aware of Philip. I didn't think he said that he was in the car.

The routes are a page or so back, I can't find them, on phone.

    According to this article:
According to one source, Cooke confirmed that he knew Philip and he also confirmed Philip was in his car. Other reports have said that he confirmed that Philip was in his radio studio. His responses, although limited, were taken to have corroborated aspects of the woman's statement.

    Two recent Sunday World pieces.

Friday 24th June 2016, 'Radio boss saw paedo in JCB digging hole at night', Nicola Tallant and Pat O'Connell
A top radio boss has revealed how he stumbled across evil paedophile Eamon Cooke in an isolated field, digging an underground bunker with a JCB in the dead of night. Kevin Branigan, CEO of Radio Nova, was out investigating interference with his own transmitter when he saw the eerie figure of Cooke beside a huge mound of earth.

“It was one of the creepiest things I have ever seen. I have thought about it so much over the years and as soon as I heard that he was being linked to Philip Cairns, I rang the Gardaí.”

In the early 1980s Cooke purchased the site at Crooksling near The Embankment pub, where it is understood he buried a 20ft steel container stuffed with his personal documents, pictures, videos, cassettes and other items he removed from his home/radio station on the Inchicore Road.

The bunker was searched by Gardaí during an investigation into allegations of child sex abuse – but at that point there had been no link made to missing schoolboy Philip Cairns.

Neighbours in adjoining properties to the Meaghan Lane site this week told the Sunday World that plain clothes detectives interviewed them regarding Cooke’s history in the area on Monday and Tuesday.

“I didn’t have much dealings with him [Cooke], but we all remember him using the earth mover on the site, sometimes as late as midnight,” one said.

A woman who owned an adjoining field said Cooke first began using the site in the early 1980s, up to six years before Philip disappeared.

“He had a tree-house up on top of one of the trees that was attached to the aerial and you’d see him clambering up and down like a monkey. He put the container in there underground. He needed the site there because the signal would reach all of Dublin. I came up today to see if the tree-house was still there,” she said. “It would send a chill up your spine to think that poor boy might be buried in there.”

Branigan recalled seeing Cooke digging an enormous hole in the ground on a cold November night in 1993, and how the pervert DJ warned that he had set “man traps” for anyone who ventured on to the land.

“At the time I was working in pirate radio and Cooke was interfering with our signal, which was up the mountains. So one evening, myself and a colleague decided to drive up,” he said. “Cooke was doing a programme at the time, which he used to broadcast on a Sunday. he’d come on with all these threats and innuendo about staying on air.

He had bought some land in Saggart, and on this particular day he said that he was aware of rumours that people wanted to rob his equipment.

“He said anyone lucky enough to make it in and out of the site alive would be welcome to his stuff. It was quite chilling,” he said. “We went up to have a look around and he had detailed on air where his own site was. When we tracked it down it was late on a Saturday and I expected nobody to be there.

We pulled over and I saw Eamon Cooke in a JCB.

“He was digging this enormous hole and there was a huge mound of earth beside it. It was about 6.30pm so it was just about to go dark and he was on his own in this field.

It was one of the creepiest things I have ever seen.

“Having heard the broadcast, I presumed he was building ‘man traps’. I was just gobsmacked.

“I came up a few days later and there wasn’t a trace of anything. It was all filled in. I couldn’t understand at the time – if he was building these ‘man traps’ where had all the earth gone? When I heard about the bunker I put two and two together.”

Cooke had claimed that he wanted the container to hide documents from the Revenue, but Gardaí later searched it and his Inchicore home as part of an investigation into sexual assaults on young girls. At that point, photographs of young boys and girls in their underwear were discovered.

Cooke’s ex-wife told the Sunday World last week that her husband had a large property portfolio that she believes Gardaí now need to search. She said that the pirate DJ savagely beat her throughout the marriage and revealed how she has given statements to officers about her husband’s properties.

There are two key sites and a property in Dublin where Gardaí will concentrate their investigations into the disappearance of schoolboy Philip.

The first is a remote area near a telecommunications mast at Ticknock, which the prolific paedophile was using to transmit his pirate Radio Dublin in 1986 when Philip disappeared. It is located just a short drive from the Ballyroan Road where the schoolboy was last seen alive and an area where Cooke had a mountainside hut.

The second is the field at Crooksling in Saggart. The third is the location of his old home on Inchicore Road, which was levelled for an apartment building.

The Sunday World understands that information given to Gardaí suggests that Cooke may have killed Philip at his house on Inchicore Road and later used his car to dispose of the body.

It has also been claimed that he got a young victim to dump the boy’s schoolbag in a laneway six days after his disappearance in a bid to confuse detectives. The paedophile died earlier this month in a Dublin hospice while he was serving a sentence for abusing young girls. Despite reports to the contrary, we can reveal Cooke also sexually abused boys.

As the investigation into the disappearance of Philip intensifies, the Sunday World can reveal that at the time the Rathfarnham schoolboy went missing, Cooke spent a considerable time in the Dublin mountains, where he had his transmitter at land adjoining the Pine Forest at Ticknock.

It is understood Cooke used the mast, above the Lamb Doyles pub, throughout 1986 and 1987, and regularly visited the site at night for years afterwards, to disconnect other pirate stations.

Saturday 25th June 2016, 'Victim’s map of paedo’s studio used in hunt to find body', Pat O'Connell
HAND-drawn maps of the Radio Dublin studio used by Eamon Cooke have been given by a former victim to Gardaí and are being used to corroborate the account of the victim who claims Philip Cairns was killed there.

A separate victim was interviewed by detectives this week and asked to draw a detailed sketch of the studio at number 58 Inchicore Road.

The studio, which has since been demolished, is now the site of the two-storey Rosemount Court apartment block.

A woman, who was aged nine at that time, told Gardaí that Philip was beaten to death by Cooke in his radio studio in Inchicore on the day that he went missing.

Its understood she has told Gardai she was in the car with Cooke when he picked Philip up before bringing him to the studio where he attacked the 13-year-old.

Cooke persuaded another of his young victims to dump the schoolboy’s bag in a laneway the following week, it is now believed.

The building in which the studio was housed was demolished almost 20 years ago and the apartment complex was built in its place. However, it is expected a garden area to the rear of the apartment block will be surveyed by Gardaí.

Officers are understood to consider it unlikely Philip’s remains were interred at this site, as they believe any remains would have been discovered during construction of the apartment block.

Officers are also seeking to establish the identities of DJs who would have been working in the studio on October 23, 1986, in order to speak with them.

A field off Meagan’s Lane, in a rural area of Tallaght, where Cooke erected a repeater for his Radio Dublin transmitter and buried a 20ft steel container below ground, is expected to be searched in the coming weeks.

This site is one of five investigating officers have linked to Cooke, including a derelict cottage in Aclare outside Tubbercurry in Co Sligo. The Sunday World has obtained an exclusive picture of the cottage, which was never developed by Cooke in any way.

Three other sites are thought to include two houses in west Dublin which he had registered in an associate’s name.

The fifth is a site in Ticknock in the Dublin mountains.

Further shocking details of Cooke’s vile life can also be revealed for the first time today, including how:

    - Gardaí now believe Cooke abused more than 20 children in the course of his lifetime.
    - He was friends with infamous U.K. child abuser Jimmy Savile – who visited the Radio Dublin studio several times in the early 1970s.
    - He committed bigamy and was already married to a second woman at the time he wed a woman 30 years his junior in 1989.
    - One of Cooke’s victim’s is believed to have presented to her doctor with a canine related sexual infection, leading to the belief he had also abused dogs.

Gardaí have yet to organise searches of any of the properties, but are continuing to map and research areas of interest to the investigation. It’s believed they will carry out a geophysical survey of the properties – mapping out soil disturbances below ground – before digging.

A forensic anthropologist and forensic archaeologist will be placed on standby to assist officers in the event of skeletal remains being uncovered. It’s understood Gardaí are also attempting to retrace Cooke’s movements around the time of Philip’s disappearance.

Two days before Philip vanished, Cooke pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit the arson attack on the home of a former victim. In November 1984, Cooke had organised the petrol-bombing of the home of John Paul O’Toole on South Circular Road. O’Toole had worked for Cooke at Radio Dublin, but had been sacked.

On October 22 – the day before Philip’s disappearance – four other men who acted with Cooke in the attack received suspended sentences.

Cooke also received a suspended sentence from Judge Frank Roe, when his sentencing came up on Monday, November 3.

A neighbour of Cooke’s – who was living adjacent to the Radio Dublin studio property in Inchicore Road at the time Philip disappeared – yesterday recalled how the deviant radio producer drove a Jag at the time of the abduction. Another job for investigators is tracing this vehicle.

I didn't post them, I did repost the one that Cooke took. There are two routes that are/may be relevant; the route that Philip would have taken to School, and the route that Cooke would have taken from Inchicore to his mast(s).

That last link states that Cooke was driving a Jag at the time of Philips disappearance.

Philip was reported to have been witnessed by a passing motorist speaking to a driver of a badly parked red/wine coloured Japanese car that day.

Now granted that if Cooke was going to offer him a lift/abduct him, he could have gotten a loan of a different car, but I think Cooke is being fitted up for this.

"The man was seen talking to Philip at the junction of Ballyroan Crescent and Ballyroan Road at 1.30pm. The man is described as having grey curly hair and as being cleanshaven. He is further described as driving a red wine-coloured Japanese car with registration numbers including ZU and 7. Gardaí believe this was the last sighting of Philip alive. There is not enough evidence for Gardaí to make an arrest."

    Any connection where? With what?

Cookes Route to the Masts, and Philips Route to School?
    They meet each other.

This isn't my theory, this is how the thread was started.

That Broadsheet article is the only time I've ever read that someone saw Philip talking to a man in a car. The reconstruction didn't mention it, and it seems like it would be quite a big thing to leave out.

Sorry, my error, the reposted route wasn't showing the final destination 3 Rocks for me.

No wonder the routes didn't meet for me.

On the car, I don't remember much either way.

No, I don't think they made it up. I think the 'witness' said he saw a boy in grey jumper talking to a man in a car.
Broadsheet seem to have gone a step further by saying that the boy was Philip Cairns.

Cooke had a massive fascination with digging holes for burying transmitters etc. I remember reading how he had that house wired to electrocute anyone (mainly P&T staff) who went near the transmitter in Inchicore (its in Peter Mulryans Radio Radio book).

    http://www.dxarchive.com/personal_recollections_ireland_1981_part_1.html#dublin

They really need to find out who was in radio dublin at that time. They must have known what was going on.

All they need do is ask the question in the radio forum on board and they'll get their answer as to who was on the station around that year.

    True enough.

Plus according to Barry Cummins' book the car was a Renault or a Mazda, which widens the range away from "Japanese".

If Cooke abducted Philip on Bsllyroan Rd there are 2 options: it was a casual abduction done on the spur of the moment as he drove to 3 Rock mountain. It was done with absolute disregard for being seen. Or it was a planned abduction which means he lay in wait and was aware of Phillips routine. How did he know Philip or know of Philip? How did he know his routine? What was the purpose of the abduction? Murder? Abuse?

I was in the area today and drove Ballyroan road for the first time in years. It is still quite a narrow road and a car parked on the side will stop the flow of traffic if there is oncoming traffic and it will require a man oeuvre to get past it. You will be noticed. Imagine doing this with more traffic than there is now with other children walking back to school. Imagine doing this with the intent to murder. I'm afraid it makes no sense. Even a pervert would want to avoid detection. Maybe there will be a definitive link to Cooke. Maybe there will be a convincing explanation about all this.

I don't have much hope for the current investigation but we will see. My own theory: someone in a trusted position who knew Philip intercepted him on the way back to school and in a struggle locally the boy died. The body was disposed of either by this person or friends and the bag forgotten in the panic. It was dumped locally later because there was a sense of the net tightening. It is a niggling mystery.

I think people are overthinking this. Firstly he probably just wanted to bring him to the station and intended to do what a paedo does and send him back on his way, Cooke would have assumed he would get away with it just like he did numerous times and so did Saville.

At the time paedos weren't known about and it wouldn't have been strange to see somebody talking to a kid from a car. You are applying how things are now to 1986. People would just assume it's somebody looking for directions or a relative giving him a lift.

He likely had no intent to murder it was a spur of the moment thing during an argument.

Maybe. What you have written means it was a spur of the moment thing. So a car pulls up beside Philip and he's told "Do you want to see a radio station?" And a quiet first year schoolboy in 1986 decides to cut classes for the afternoon and go off with a complete stranger. Maybe I am overthinking it.

Could be. Maybe they said "I know your mother and she said it was fine..". All the warnings you give kids such as don't get into the car with strangers etc. came after this case.

Doubtful given his age. He was around the same age as me (a few months apart) and I can recall the advice against getting into cars with strangers back then.
Also, he was 13 so not that innocent in my view that he'd have gotten into a stranger's car.

    Two things I learnt today.

    1)

The 1973 allegations against Cooke were reported more specifically than I originally thought.

The Irish Press (17 April 1973):

Eamonn Cooke "emphatically denied reported scandalous rumours about his private life. ... The reported allegations ... are connected with charges of child molesting".

    2)

Cooke's odd dealings with the police were reported in detail as early as 1988. Peter Mulryan wrote in his book 'Radio Radio: The Story of Independent, Local, Community and Pirate Radio in Ireland' (1988):

"before getting involved in radio, Cooke had risen to fame in the Sunday World for his vigilante activities. Eamonn would tune into the police frequencies and when an emergency or disturbance was reported, he would jump into his Jaguar and speed up off the back streets to help the police apprehend the criminals.".

I've added more details and photographs to this piece:

Tv3 documentary on now... A bit of a rehash so far, they havnt connected the two yet (p. Cairns and Cooke).

I totally forgot his bag was dumped in the laneway a few days after, totally weird.
Perhaps the bag was forgotten about during the abduction and then found later and a panic to get rid of it set in. Then the perpetrator had some bizarre idea to ' return it' to the scene of the crime.

The retired detective said he didn't think the story fitted, in that it was unlikely that Cooke would have brought Philip back to the radio station with people around. Never stopped him abusing kids there before going by other stories though!

Programme did a good job making Cooke a more likely suspect:
    Claims he also abused boys
Retired Chief S said Cooke corroborated parts of the girls story (what parts not said)
Pointed to attempts to find DNA of girl who said she threw it over wall on lane

    Wait and see.
