Absolutely devastated by this, poor guy went in and put his life on the line for the love of mma,and our entertainment, having watched it live it makes it even worse for me,

A fatality was due in the sport, combat and head trauma go hand in hand,I expect the **** to hit the fan now and the sport be very heavily regulated even though safety procedures were adhered to in this case I believe,

Makes you realise the sacrifices these men and women go to were all guilty of taking pop's at them now and again but this brings it home how dangerous it is,may he rest in peace.

    R.I.P.
    awful news.
He didn't look right on his feet before the finish but no one would've expected that.

    Terrible to hear.

I feel sick after reading this. Never met the guy or anything but it's hit me hard. Having just retired from the sport last year and had 10 fights that could of been any of my friends or me. Jesus this is awful. Poor guy and his family. There is gonna be an unholy backlash from this.

    Sad to hear.

Could this have any repercussions for Charlie Ward? I know morally he's not to blame in any way but would the Gardai be interested in pursuing criminal charges in some way if a complaint was filed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,405 ✭✭✭Lukker-

So sad. Didn't look like a late call to me either, he was covering up save for the last 4 or 5 punches and the ref stopped it at the right time.

Medical staff were on point too, just goes to show even when you take all the precautions you still run the risk. That goes for all contact sports really.

    RIP.

I'd be interested to hear as well where this puts Charlie? Is he still held accountable in the eyes of the law?

I think that the referee would be more likely to be held civilly at least in someway responsible. Though not having seen the incident I can't comment as to whether is likely to be held civilly responsible. I suppose I mean that legal consequences are more likely to attach themselves to the referee than the other fighter.

I can't see Charlie Ward facing any criminal charges.

I don't see how he would be. If it was any other sport like rugby or soccer it would be chalked up to a terrible freak accident.

Unfortunately you will probably have Joe Duffy callers looking for him to be prosecuted but I don't think the Gardai are stupid enough to.

Absolutely sickening. I don't understand how anyone is surprised. Parents beware.

Yes, the Joe Duffy brigade will be out in force.

This is just terrible for all involved

Such a sad story, horrible to hear some utterly dispicable individuals on the radio today jumping on the issue

I think you'll notice most people are surprised. There are have been very few deaths worldwide for such a violent sport. None that I recall at a major organisation.

How many players drop dead each year from things like SADS playing Gaa? Yet no calls for that to be banned even though far more people have died as a result of it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,604 ✭✭✭dave1982

Seen on facebook yesterday, Conor was ringside and said fight should have been stopped sooner. I know number 1 rule is keep going till ref stops it but you'd surely know its over yourself and walk away. I don't compete myself so I obviously clueless. I seen loads of fights where person is out and opponent walks away before ref gets in to stop it. Post not intended as attack on Ward.

Very, very sad. Having watched the sport casually for about 5 or 6 years now, it's certainly going to take a lot of joy out of it for me. RIP.

How brutal was the fight? Did Ward unload on a clearly unconcious opponent? Very sad news this.

Saw the last minute and the KO and it didn't look particularly bad but you never know what went on before.

Say the last minute and the KO and it didn't look particularly bad but you never know what went on before.

So true. With head trauma it doesn't take much to cause damage. Even an innocuous punch or two can prove fatal. Boxinga and MMA really are lethal sports. It's like Russian Roulette!

I dont think GAA players go onto the field with the sole purpose of beating the crap out of their opponents.

SAD can happen anywhere, anytime. My niece dropped dead in her bedroom at 17. No cause of death found.

I don't know who are worse, those fighting and their promoters or the crowds who support and whose cheering gets louder when someone's blood is on the floor.

    Its barbaric!

Surely Charlie ward couldn't ever face any sort of charges over this? I find that very hard to believe. This happened in a legal sport well within the rules of that legal sport. It's a terrible accident that's all.

This is a RIP thread - show some respect or stay out of the thread. If you don't like the sport stay out of the forum. Any questions PM me - do not respond in-thread

Everyone else, please do not rise to the bait and again please keep this thread respectful to someone who has died in terrible circumstances

Very sad to hear, no one expects this to happen at a combat sports event.

I wonder were there any underlying medical circumstances at play here? I'm sure there will be an autopsy, or PM. Not that it will do anything to alleviate the grief for his family but it would be nice to get some more information on the cause of death.

So sad - RIP Joao Carvalho

Something like this happens rarely in contact sport but when it does your thoughts are with all involved , the deceased fighters family , the opponent , the referee , the officials , coaches everyone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,751 ✭✭✭ASOT

Heart goes out to his family and also to Charlie, I couldnt even imagine whats going through his head right now. I'd advise everyone to avoid the comments section of most articles about this as it's just uneducated people having a go at the sport.

current guy wants them to wear helmets

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,026 ✭✭✭0ph0rce0

Just looked at the video there, he went down and took 12-13 shots to the head. Didn't look too bad but i think it should have been stopped a little sooner. Obviously no one knew what was going to happen but 5 less shots could have saved the mans life. Sad when **** like this happens to someone doing something that they love.

    RIP

Would padded headguards be so bad? A combination of an amateur boxing headguard and rugby scrum cap would be suitable.

Whatever happens after today, it won't be the same sport again lads...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 883 ✭✭✭davmol

Charlie ward wont face any criminal charges here and he shouldn't have to either.

Its a VERY unfortunate mishap in sports but ,along with many sports it carries inherent risks, this is why decent shows have the medical support they have although even with the best support things will always happen.

    RIP

I've deleted a number of posts, some respoiding to comments I had previoulsy dealt with, others discussing possible cause or suggesting ways the sport may react. This is a condolance thread and it's inappropriate to speculate in that way. Again, any questions please PM me and don't respond to this post in-thread

    Thanks
