Freddie's last appearance with the band, Knebworth, 9 August 1986

    Is this the real life?
    Is this just Fantasy?

    434255.jpg
...and leave it to God Save the Queen

there were 120,000 crammed into Knebworth that day, and I did not get as close to the stage as I would normally try to at these events, so the pictures came out a bit less clear than many of the others I've taken over the years. Still, I'm happy enough with them

First roll of film in a Olympus OM4 I picked up. I had to fix a few things to get it working, the battery was corroded and stuck, the mirror was broken and the aperture was sticking.

Are people ok with instagram links being posted? My Flickr account has fallen in to disuse and most of my shots are on IG these days.

If you're using Instagram to digitise your negatives then fire away :-) If they're originally taken using a phone or digital camera then obv. no.

What would be a good resolution for scanning 35mm negs? I've picked up a flatbed scanner and am currently playing with the settings trying to figure it out, it has a max optical resolution of 4800 dpi, is that high needed? I scanned some negs at 4800 and 3200 to compare but cant see much difference in quality.

    Hi dylbert,

I'm using an Epson V550 flatbed and have found no improvement above 2400. I'd like to try another scanner for 35mm but there seems to be a big jump in cost for a dedicated film scanner (I would need one that also supports 120). For 120 I've found the V550 great. I haven't printed above 16" (120) and 10" (35mm).

I tend to switch off most of the features such as ICE (which in any case only works with colour). I remove dust manually using the 'J' spot removal tool that comes with the current version of Photoshop (excellent but slow going).

I have issues with dust (home contains cats, dogs, stove :-o ) so I before each scan I wipe the glass and use a blower.

I also have regular enough battles with 'newton's rings': this happens if the film is a little kinked/saggy and touches the scanner glass (looks like a rainbow prism effect). I also get banding the odd time, which is when you get a straight line across the scan image, but can be fixed with a wipe (normally, unless there's something on the inside of the glass).

Scanning can be slow and sometimes (e.g. with badly curled film) I have failed to get good results; I'd like to re-do some work at some stage if I can ever afford a dedicated scanner.

    Cheers Aramicon.

I have the Epson V370, it scans 35nn negs or slides but not 120mm. Do you scan to tiff or jpeg? also when scanning B&W do you use 16bit greyscale or 24bit colour.

I'm just learning how do develop and darkroom print, done an introduction course before Christmas. My plan is to develop film at home and scan the negatives, then select images I like and print them.

Nice one Dylbert; I really enjoy the analogue workflow, but I'm still limited to doing what you plan- develop b/w negs, scan, then print from the digital files. I'd love a darkroom but don't have funds or space. I keep my development workflow simple, generally use Rodinal at the normal dilution. Should really experiment a bit more; maybe this year.

I always scan to tiff, then edit/remove dust in Photoshop and export to jpeg, a fullsize version for printing and a smaller one for possible web/Instagram. I don't really print many but find it the best way to look at your work. B/W scans are 13-15Mb each and colour (48-bit) 35-40Mb.

I use 16-bit grayscale, though it might be worth experimenting a bit. I have had some odd issues like having when turning dust removal on causes weird artifacts. It might be worth scanning the same strip of film a bunch of different ways and comparing the results. Getting the film flat can be a dose- some film seems to curl easily.

Would be interested to hear what settings others here use when scanning. I'm sure there are things I can improve on.
