Treated myself yesterday to a bottle of Glenmorangie 10yo Single Malt. I'm really liking the smoky Scotch whiskys at the moment.

Glenmorangie isn't smoky?? Great scotch though. Deceptively complex.

    Looking for the next recommendation.......
    Currently drinking:
    RB 12
    RB 21
    Waterford Ballkilcavan 1.2
    Waterford Gaia Organic
    Yellow Spot
    Powers John Lane

Was thinking of trying one of the JJ Corry?
Anything else I should be thinking of with the above quality in the €50-100 range? The RB21 was a very welcome gift....:)

You've knocked off Yellow Spot but if you haven't tried I'd highly recommend either of the wine influenced Green Spots, Chateau Leoville Barton or Chateau Montelena. Both excellent and interesting expressions of Irish whiskey.

Thanks, I’ve never gotten around the the Green Spot, I will ad those to the list........actually I found the yellow spot quite disappointing, I expected more......

Aye, I've enjoyed yellow spot more over time but I definitely prefer the green spots personally; more lively and exciting. Yellow spot is more mellow and has more of a "classic" character maybe. I definitely feel it's hard to justify getting yellow spot over redbreast or john's lane. What did you think of those?

I don't think you'd be alone here in having those assertions.

Anytime! She got me a fairly decent amount in master of malt vouchers too. I think that'll be for another thread though.

    Jesus that took no twisting.

You're on the hook now bai.

    ---

Had a friend over to our fully vaccinated abode. Long time friend, we go back, to that fateful day of 12th September 2001, when we started college together, but as with life, we'd not seen each other in a while... Anyways...

He's never been a man for a dram, but he's always been a brandy sort.

So sure enough, threw him some Hennessy XO; didn't know himself. So I thought, given I didn't get to do the Chateau de Breuil tasting, wouldn't this be prime time for that?

Sure enough, we ran through the samples between us, and the wee eyes lit up. That 20yo is a special thing.

But after that, I was trying to explain to him how, his distaste for whiskey was based off drinking Jemmy and Red or Paddy and Coke as a kid...

So broke out the RB12, neat... The ****ing dose loved it... Like it was water. Add him to the list.

@Cazale those Breuil's really are something...

But, nothing like dragging another poor soul down into the pot still misery with the rest of us. :D

So I picked up a bottle of Bush Caribbean .A new release from one of the few major Irish labels at only 30 euro ended my latest break from whiskey even if it was only weeks long . It’s grand .Any Irish whiskey fan will inevitably try it . Sensible price is most welcome . Some Malt in there ( finished in rum cask and ‘married ‘with standard white label . Negatives ? Has a bit of the youth or more than likely harsh oak/‘American’ ( varnish like ?) influence / taste but it’s not unpleasant and can also be found in bottles treble the price .( Apologies if descriptions are crude I’m only a few years down the whiskey road ) Bushmills say the youngest spirit in it is 7 ( or is it ten ?) years old but at times it tastes younger
Positives ?Several .The toffee sickly sweetness I’d say many of us expected isn’t there .The rum def IS .It’s a far more nuanced drop than I expected especially at the price .I’d say some of the least attractive ( to me) elements can also be found in Bush Malt 10 so if you like that this could be a good daily drinker for you . At the end of it all I’d def buy again but I think as a sherrybomb fan I might prefer the Black Bush .It seems to have longer and larger angels tears ( dripping down side of glass) than I can ever recall .

I'm 40 this week. The plan was to head over to Islay so she got away very lightly!

I have a few tasted but I was waiting for the bloody cold to go to enjoy them. Definitely worth investigating a full size bottle.

Sign him up to boards. He'll be on the Redbreast 27 before you know it haha

The Bush Caribbean is pure Rum and banana ! It reminds me a little of an around €80 bottle of specialist spirit from the same distillery sold through a Belfast whiskey shop .

What's the general consensus on Bushmills 10?

Not mad about it and I like malts .Worth paying the extra for Teeling Single Malt .Tyrconnell far better and €1 to €6 cheaper . Sexton nicer, Tesco Finest far nicer ...

Thanks. It was a gift from a friend today. Just had a small taster before dinner and it definitely wont go to waste. I like almost anything aged in bourbon and you get a good taste of that with the sweetness from the sherry, it's quite easy to drink.

Will check out the others you mentioned though. If I like this, I'm bound to like them.

I’ve ordered the Green spot Montelena, looking forward to trying that, probably should have asked which was better on here first.....

On the others, I’m a huge RB12 fan, it’s my go-to and the 21 is just amazing altogether.
John’s Lane I found a bit disappointing, I personally find it a bit short and lacking much depth, that’s just my personal view I know others on here speak highly of it......what’s your own view?

By malts do you mean single malts specifically, or malt vrs grain whiskey?
But either way FYI Sexton is also a Bushmills single malt. A 4 year old, sherry cask.

It's also owned by the parent company as Bushmills. Proximo.

IMO worth it when reduced to 30 in Tesco, but better value at 45 to 50 euro is to be found out there.

Yes irish Single Malts .I find grains more pepperminty and admittedly 'fresh' tasting but far prefer the bite of a Malt

Had to head to Newry yesterday to pick up work equipment for the new job. So stuck my head into Sainsbury's.

    RB12 for €46.00!

If I didn't lay out similar per corner in Modern Tyres I'd have grabbed a bottle.

Naturally they have a better selection of scotches vs Irish than you'd usually find here in Mexico. Will be back up again for work in the next month or so, so will pick up a selection.

Pearse Lyons tasting tonight with Irish Whiskey Society. Some decent whiskey but boy I do find the IWS nights dry and overlong compared to other offerings.

Royal Oak distillery tasting with Carlow Whiskey Society for me tonight, pleasantly surprised with the whiskey. For the price I think its hard to beat. The Single Grain did nothing for me but I liked the others, the pot still is on my shopping list to pick up at some stage.

I tried some Royal Oak stock when I visited a few years ago but that was when Bernard Walsh was still involved. Haven't tried the Busker range yet but I've heard good things from those who have. I don't think they get enough coverage when you consider you can buy a bottle each of their own produced single grain, single malt, pot still and blend for 150 euros all in. Some new brands are charging that for one bottle of sourced stock!

I've tried all the Busker's range, and sorry to say I didn't really love any of them myself.

Has anyone read the article in the Sunday Business Post about the Whiskey and Wealth Club? It's behind a paywall.
From the opening paragraph it seems that he was about to buy the company behind Boann Distillery until someone wrote a blog article about him.
Seems a bit of a reach, doesn't it?

    Whats the dudes name... Rumpelstiltskin?
    Doubtful story!

I can't see why the family behind Boann would have been interested in selling to be honest.

The guy doing it was there from the start but never mentioned Walsh at all but did make a point of saying this was the only whiskey which is 100% Carlow. The first tasting we did was Writers tears and there is a noticeable gulf in quality between the ranges but there's a price difference as well. For me the pot still at €40 would be a decent whiskey to have on the go, not amazing by any stretch but a nice sipping whiskey. As I mentioned, I found the Single Grain to be pretty bad and tasted like a €15 whiskey you'd get in Aldi or something, others seemed to think it was ok though.

He did make some points about the pricing of comparable whiskeys and how the parent company are targeting a price point with a consistent quality. Mentioned they're struggling to get into the supermarkets and O' Briens and that the market and sales here have been tiny compared to the US.

Ah yeah I mean none of them are outstanding but at a price of €40 and one for €30 I think most people would find one of them a pleasant drink of an evening.
