In terms on the rifle itself I'd personally go for the remington 700

Tikka t3. 1:8 barrel version will shoot any ammo weight up to 75gr well. Indestructible and Stone Age reliable.

Depending on price: Remington 700, Tikka T3, or Howa 1500.

As for scope, you'll want big magnification for little targets. Great budget glass to be had from: Burris, Bushnell, or Nikon.

Don't forget a good trigger job, especially if you get a Rem700.
I have a Timney set at 1.5 lbs on mine.

If it were me, for hunting.
    • Remington 700 limited Edition in 223 - €1,100 (or so)
    • Second hand Zeiss, Bushnell Elite, in the 6-24x50/56 range (so 6-18, 4-16, 6-24, etc) - €500
    • Rifle Basix trigger - €150 (or so)
    • Warne Rail & rings - €120
    • Ase northstar or A-tec Suppressor - €200

    Total price - €2,070.

I held one of these rifle in Outdoor Sports in Ballymahon, albeit in 308. It was superb. The feel, the weight, the balance, the look, everything. The only problem, with everything i wanted it was outside my budget so i went for another Remmy instead.

If i had the spare cash and wanted a foxing set up. This is it.

thanks for that, had a look on the website, nice looking gun,any idea how much to get threaded for mod?

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,726 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Depending on who does it between €50 - €90. Also some offer an invisible thread cap in the price.

Most RFDs have someone they turn to to get work done so whatever you go for, and from whomever, ask them to have it sent of and done while you wait for the license.

Tikka would get my preference along with a wildcat evolution mod or husken mod and now that the deer season is over there'll be a few nice scopes coming up for sale

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,085 ✭✭✭clivej

tikka or CZ 547 rifle. I have the varmint CZ, a great rifle.

Bushnell 4200 elite scope 6-24x50, I got 2 secondhand years ago and still perfect.
I can't stand the Warne rings, get anything else. Best choice for the CZ is to fit a picatinny rail, then most any picatinny rings will fit.

Most important thing is to try out several rifles for fit, weight etc before you buy. You can tell a lot in the shop.

mcbride had a couple of nice
tikkas and rem 700s for sale i don't think he
ever had them on his website

Sako A7 synthetic, it's a well built, light action that comes pre-threaded and with weaver bases for €1500. As Cass said add a second hand Zeiss, some Warne mounts, a decent sling and you'll still be on budget.

There's a display model you could have a look at in Dave Muvihil's in Ballymahon.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,726 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Fantastic rifle. Had one in .243. The weight, balance, feel and performance were everything, and more, you'd expect from Sako without the €2K price tag.

    Sniperman,
Again, get out there and see if there are deals to be had. You may shop by price or find one that just fits you.

Don't buy a trigger for the 700, just because. I bought a 700 SPS in 223 and bought a Timney #510, "just because." Here's the Timney, for sale. Turns out the trigger on my SPS was a thing of beauty.

With a bit of patience, when you learn how to adjust the American Lawyer Lobby out of them, modern 700 triggers are as good as any.

+1 for the Tikka T3's drop free magazine. A costly upgrade to a 700.

Is the A7 chambered in .223? Only 22 calibre I see listed is 22-250.

    Ah flip you're right: http://www.sako.fi/rifles/sako-a7/a7-synthetic-stainless

I don't want to move the goal posts, but 22-250 is a great calibre too.

Never thought if it were available in 223. Sorry about that OP.

Try to get one with 1:8 barrel twist.
1:12 restricts you to max 55-60 gr ammo, but very accurate nonetheless.
It's usually stamped on the barrel, most gunshops haven't a clue what barrel twist is.
You won't go wrong with either.

just to add that the cz 527 kevlar varmint is a tack driver in 223. 1 in 9 twist ..shoots everything from 40 grain up into half inch groups and im no great shot..not sure if they can be got now though? the op is probably sorry he ever asked!:D

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 28,726 Mod ✭✭✭✭Cass

Had one of those. Nice rifle, very accurate, and as you said would shoot any round you fed it from 40 to 75 gr. The Kevlar is the most expensive of the CZ527 models.

I have this with the Kevlar stock. A tack driver with any ammo I feed it.
Best groups were 1 under 30mm, with another 2 groups at 40mm all at 300m using 40gr VMax.

Best rifle I held at the time and why I bought it.

Another Boardsie and a friend of mine bought my CZ of me a few years ago. This is a group he shot at 250 yards with it using 50gr American Eagle (not the best bullet in the world). Measures 36mm. That is Half MOA. Off a bipod.
