Santa is getting a title shot against the winner. He's unranked and will struggle with the weight cut but he's a needle-mover.

In a way i'm not shocked but i'm extremely surprised by the lack of promotion for UFC 205.

Cost-cutting must be in full swing.

They've hardly dropped any new promos in weeks, we're 11 days out now, there's been no promotional push whatsoever.

I assume it's gonna begin now when Conor gets to NY but even still, for an event of this magnitude i thought they'd really go for broke on the advertising.

You obviously haven’t been in NYC as every second bin in some areas has a UFC 205 advert on it

They had promos on Fox during practically every ad break during the highest viewership events this week with NFL on Sunday and also a good few during the World Series (with Dana on the buildup show). They’ll have fighters on every ‘Tim and Suzie’ show next week as most of the morning and then late night shows are based in NYC. They’ll also have promos but they’ll be doing a lot more of Trump style ‘earned media’ than they would normally due as it is way harder to do for fights anywhere else.

Think another thing that is changing their strategy slightly for them is the election, as primetime ad buys would be more expensive up until Tuesday and the coverage of the election itself is dwarfing everything here right now.

I think we never really see them hitting the real final stretch for marketing a show until they release the full preview show.

Good post. Hadn't factored in the Presidential debate into the ads. It's just felt a bit flat on the promo front. I thought they'd have done UFC 200 style promo drops every couple of days this week.

To be honest i was surprised by Dana's World Series appearance he barely said 2 words about 205 and kept waffling on about his father-in-law and the Cubs :) Which, to be fair, i enjoyed lol. Hopefully the Cubs get it done tonight :)

If they want to go BIG, it would be amazing to see Conor on Saturday Night Live this weekend.

Even if he's not invited, he could build interest by lobbing monster cans at the set.

On top of my earlier points, UFC 200 was in the dead zone of sport in the States whereas at the moment it is pretty much the busiest time of the year with NFL, NBA, NHL, MLB, MLS all in season, along with College football and sports from Europe. There are constant promos for every game in the week ahead so a big spend 2 weeks out is pretty much throwing money away, as ‘hardcore’ fans already know about the event and it’ll likely get lost in the noise for casuals who aren’t going to plan a weekend around it two weeks in advance. They’ll build hype up next week, post election and World Series, and we’ll be inundated with promos/sport show coverage Weds/Thurs/Fri in the lead in.

I am looking forward to more promos, embeddeds, and previews. Cant all come soon enough!

Great post again man. You're on fire today.

For me, the excitement always kicks in to full swing when the first Embedded drops and when Dan Hardys Inside the Octagon drops. Then it's on!

US media is a bit tough to wrap your head around until you’ve lived over here for a while, the quantity and quality of advertising is so different to what you get in Ireland. There are so many more things trying to get your attention at any one time.

Anyone for a McGregor poem? :)

    Ode to History

    Glide unto the breach,
    knuckling,
    Slip slide from defeat,
    buckling.

    Silver is the back,
    carries hope,
    Gold is the jack,
    holding both.

The tiger will come at night,
    Fantine dreaming,
    Hope will end or might,
    pristine gleaming.

There are dreams that cannot be,
    storms we learn to weather,
Some dreams seem meant to be,
    with tigers throwing leather.

    No thanks.

Is the criticism of McGregor that he has tarnished the spirit of mixed martial arts valid?

What do we reckon the pay scale for Conor will be here?

    5m flat disclosed?

That's the UFC's responsibility. No fighter should give a crap about that.

    I'm gonna guess 3m.

was 3 for diaz 2 wasnt it? would expect it to be higher but not by much(1-2mil).
with all the other costcutting around and how stacked this card is I cant see them giving him too much of a bump

First 2 parts of an excellent casual-fan-friendly breakdown by UFC Featherweight Dan Hooker, assisted by Kai-Kara France (this season on TUF).

It's an in-octagon breakdown demonstrating strengths and weaknesses of both men. The final part is due out later today.

Highly recommend a watch. He keeps it simple and demonstrates the techniques and cuts in footage of the 2 men fighting.

Great stuff, well worth a watch.

Khabibs father said Conor accepted a $3.5 million disclosed purse for 205. Eddie on his champions contract ($500,000).

How he knows, i've no idea....

Next we'll have Dustin Poiriers 3rd cousin giving us Conor's PPV % cut. :D

in my opinion, he doesn't know and hes talking shite cause theyre a very bitter camp at the moment. God only knows how much it will be but Id say itll be around the 5 mil mark. god only knows the ppv cut but it probably makes the disclosed fee look like pennies!

There's no way on earth Conor is taking $3 million disclosed again. Whatever the number is will be above that. You don't take a pay freeze after delivering the number 1 PPV card of all time, going into the new number 1 PPV card of all time.

So anywhere from $3.5m to $5m disclosed seems a reasonable guess.

And still leaves him underpaid relative to what he's bringing in. Even $4m disclosed and top tier PPV of 2m+ sales ($5), that still only makes him $14 million on the night.

The UFC's cut is still hugely disproportionate. Even after all costs are paid the UFC should be clearing $55 million for the night. That's outrageous. If Conor isn't on this card it does 800,000 to 1,000,000 buys headlined by Woodley, despite the undercard. Max. Simple as that.

Same with 202. Take Conor out and you're left with a 400,000 buy card max.

He currently adds 1 million PPV buys by himself to any card. Paying him $14 million total is a bit of a joke. It should be much closer to $20-$22 million.

its crazy how the sport has come along that we're talking about a guy ''only'' making 14 mil on the night. 3-4 years ago that would have been a nonsense figure when you think back on it!

Naive question but is it Conor himself who negotiates or is it his manager Audi Altar (spelling) ?

I'd imagine Conor does a lot of it himself these days

UFC 205 Media call starts in 1 hour

I liked how Diaz was respectful of McGregor in the 202 call. Both of them shut down a reporter who was trying to antagonize McGregor about tapping.

Has Conor landed in New York yet?

I bet Ido is already in Central Park drilling touchbutt in preparation.

One of the many Bromances in the McGregor tale has been Ido Portal and Colin Byrne! Ido was out in Portugal with him for a few weeks.

Then you've got Dillon and McGregor/JK, Conor Wallace and Lee Hammond.

    Bromance everywhere!

Would love to see John and Conor rolling with Marcelo Garcia this week i'd geek out.
