Agreed, but I still reckon there are thousands of unaccompanied L drivers on the roads every day.

So what? You didn't do that when you were learning?

I'm not giving out about it(,) Jesus.

I'm actually backing up unaccompanied L drivers as I don't believe there's anywhere near enough of an incentive not to do it. I would certainly drive unaccompanied if I was learning again!

No I didn't. I can't think of one other country in the Western world where you can legally drive without having a driving licence or where a blind eye is turned to unlicensed driving - outrageous.

Only in Ireland could you drive to a driving test, fail it, and get back in your car and drive home. It should be illegal for an insurance company to insure an unlicensed driver and then this would stop and if you take the chance of driving without a driving license, your car should be taken and crushed.

We should be raising the bar and quality of the drivers on the road, instead of making excuses as to why people can break the law.

    Completely and utterly incorrect

No I bloody well didn't, and nor did anyone I know either. Mind you that wasn't in Ireland as you might have guessed. It's a bloody disgrace that this kind of carry on is still seen as in any way acceptable to be honest.

A lot of cars with L plates have them up for a different driver - partner / son / daughter etc.
Which should be made an offence IMO. I mean, what's the bloody point of the things if the chances of it actually being a legal accompanied learner driver actually actively learning to drive is probably less than 10% (wild guess).

It is a tricky one though, as I'm sure there are plenty of Garda that would be understanding and inclined to agree with the notion that it's extremely difficult to reach a stage where you're capable of passing the test without acquiring the experience and confidence that driving alone will give you, rather than constantly relying on a crutch in the passenger's seat.
It's a miracle that the rest of the civilized world ever manage to learn to drive if that's really the case then.

The privilege of being allowed to drive alone, is exactly what passing the driving test is for. If you allow people to drive unaccompanied before that, you may as well just abandon the whole idea of driving tests altogether and just rely on self assessment.

Without dual controls in a car the benefits of having a qualified driver beside you are quite low.

Without garda tweets the quality of this thread is quite low :(

I am pretty sure there's a "learning to drive" forum... btw

If that driver (who got 9 months jail) who killed a young lad on tolka road had a qualified driver with him, the accident most likely would not have happened.

Speeding and an ABS fault, having a qualified driver next to you couldn't have prevented either.
He was speeding when he hit the teenager and didn’t know there was a fault with the anti-lock braking system. The court heard Gareth Jones stayed at the scene and rang the emergency services.

The qualified driver can say "Danno, slow t'**** down" so Id argue in theory the former could prevent the incident.

Maybe the qualified driver would have a) spotted the ABS fault light on the dashboard and b) told him to slow down?

Where does it say there was an ABS fault light on the dashboard?

HGV stopped in Cork City with insecure load of 20 tonne bales. Driver advised.
Does this mean that he was allowed to drive on?

They complimented the 20 tonne bales by letting them know real bales have curves ridding them of their insecurities.
