Anyone know what the percentage of cars there would be with no tax, no licence, drink driving, no insurance, no NCT, bald tyres, non working headlights, non working brakelights at a typical checkpoint would be? Would 5-10% be a low estimate for it?

You mean all of the mentioned transgressions in one punter? The checkpoint equivalent of a Christmas Tree Packet? A small number of stalwarts, I should imagine! :pac:

No just one of the faults listed.

I doubt there's any concrete stats but I'd reckon 1 in 10 cars would have at least 1 minor issue, (NCT/Tax in its first month being out, one tyre getting close to worn, tint too dark, etc.)

    This too shall pass.

Probably, but I'd say that's the unmarked Garda car, they've a whole fleet of Hyundais now.

Edit; Hyundais looks wrong written down, what's a better plural Hyundaii, Hyundaiuses, Hyundai (same plural rule as sheep)?)

    Hyundini :)

(I'd just go with the cop-out (no pun intended:D) and say "Hyundai cars").

Just flicking through this twitter account and I notice that there seems to be a lot more insured cars getting seized for no tax and NCT. And there are piles of cars getting seized for no insurance.

Is this a new proactive initiative or do they just happen to be tweeting about more of these instances?

And the insurance companies see it the other way, that prices are rising because of uninsured drivers, but then they would say that wouldn't they.
The fact is if someone is forced off the road because they can't afford the insurance then it doesn't matter if they lose their licence for a year or not, they see it as worth taking a chance.

Well there has been a good few tweets in the last couple of days... and a ferry-load of vehicle seizures!!

2 cars seized for no insurance in Limerick

4 cars seized in Naas - 2 for no insurance, 2 for no insurance + tax + NCT

1 van seized in Dublin for no tax since 2013

1 van and 1 car seized in Wicklow for no tax in over a year

4 cars seized for no insurance in Newbridge

2 cars seized in Kilkcock - 1 car for no tax + NCT & the other for no insurance

Driver arrested for drink-driving in Rathfarnham (4 times over the limit!!)

Saw four Cop cars on my town's main street today. One had a van pulled in and the others were kind of parked all about.

And I thought they were on a go slow!

the guards should high five the few of us on the road that actually have insurance, nct, tax, license, no drink, not on the phone, paying attention, roadworthy tyres, all working lights.

Feels like every second car on the road is missing at least one of the above

Today is "National Slow Down Day" so they're out in force on the streets today, apparently.... I haven't seen any......

Makes sense. Saw a Garda speed van at the unholy hour of 0730 this morning on the N3 direction City Centre.
Kind of useless as it is so busy there and then, you should be rewarded if you manage to break the speed limit

Didnt see one cop out today on my way into work on the N3.

Two biker cops stopped having a chat on the N7 causing a massive slow down from rubber neckers.

Speed gun covering the road works on the M6/M17 junction around lunchtime today.

    This too shall pass.

I sometimes play a little game when I'm on foot at night .. can I count ten cars in a row with roadworthy lights. Surprising how often I fail - and that's only front lights. So that's >10% on one check alone.

I saw quite a few Gardai and Garda cars today around Dublin (Northside). No speed checks though, even in common places.

Learner driver got lucky, got 3 points and a caution. Could have ended up with 3 officenses with 7 points and an automatic 6 months ban:

2 of them got lucky according to that. Gardai must of been feeling jolly letting them off so easy.

Only 6 learner drivers a day are given penalty points for driving unaccompanied according to a fairly recent report.

Given the thousands of unaccompanied L drivers that are on the road every day, the chances of getting points are obviously incredibly low. And I'd bet at least half of those 6 a day that do get done, are only getting done because they've been pulled over for speeding and/or no tax/insurance/NCT.

I reckon if you're a safe learner driver and have your tax, insurance and NCT in date, you have a less than 1% chance of getting penalty points for driving unaccompanied.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,736 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Yeah but how many unaccompanied learner drivers have L plates up on their car when they are driving unaccompanied? I'd imagine most take them down not to draw attention to the fact. If that's the case then how would the Gardai know they were only on a learner permit other than pull them for another offence or they are stopped at a checkpoint?

I'd say there's plenty driving with and without L plates. I'm sure there are thousands driving around unaccompanied WITH L plates per day, yet only 6 a day are done. Even if we go with a very conservative figure of 3000 L drivers driving unaccompanied with L plates, that's a 0.2% chance of getting done on any given day. And that chance would reduce further if you weren't speeding and have your tax/insurance/NCT.

Essentially, the law is very poorly enforced and as a result isn't respected very well. It is a tricky one though, as I'm sure there are plenty of Garda that would be understanding and inclined to agree with the notion that it's extremely difficult to reach a stage where you're capable of passing the test without acquiring the experience and confidence that driving alone will give you, rather than constantly relying on a crutch in the passenger's seat. A lot would also be sympathetic to people needing a car to get to work.

Poorly enforced yes, but the everything is a con and scheme to be little us citizens attitude is bigger failure. There plenty other places that get high pass rates sticking to rules placed in front of them. Current rules, bar theory, have been in UK for over 30 years with little issue's, from my experience.

A lot of cars with L plates have them up for a different driver - partner / son / daughter etc.

    They can't be bothered taking

Agreed, but I still reckon there are thousands of unaccompanied L drivers on the roads every day, even taking what you said into consideration.
