Read their biographies on Wiki to fill in the gaps. The series was a bit deferential and I thought Helena Bonham Carter didn't look remotely like Princess Margaret. Olivia Coleman was excellent as usual.

Season 5 is the Imelda Staunton led series Colman and HBC were in seasons 3 and 4.

Never seems to stop HBC being cast in historical roles... she's in Nolly at the moment and doesn't look anything like the former Crossroads star Noelle Gordon. Ditto for Queen Mum in The King's Speech.

I just watched the episode with the Bashir interview.

I know there is a lot of fiction in the show but I’m curious about a few things.

Did they Panorama crew really disguise themselves and hi-fi equipment installers?

Did Charles and Camilla have their romance openly in front of the family? I know the family knew about the affair but they are shown kissing at the bonfire in Windsor Castle with the Queen, William and the whole family (plus a lot of others) there. They didn’t show anyone taking notice and I am assuming that the moment is meant to represent that everyone knew and just ignored it.

I googled it for you "The cloak-and-dagger operation to get Bashir and crew into Kensington Palace was real; the 2021 independent inquiry revealed how they were disguised as tradesmen to gain access to Diana’s apartments." https://www.historyextra.com/period/20th-century/the-crown-s5-e8-real-history-diana-panorama-interview-what-happened/

I googled it myself (just after posting)

don’t know why I asked the question when googling takes no time at all.

    thanks anyway though.

Anyone watch any episodes from season 6? Mostly Diana based so far (episodes 1 and 2) where previously the series had a self contained story in each episode. Casting is excellent especially Diana, same as series 5 I think.

I enjoyed it, will watch the rest of what was released over the weekend.

The first 4 episodes were ok,, It's a hard subject to deal with.

Maybe the two Lads involved might sit this one out..

they make them all too nice was Dodi Fayed such a dope?, was Prince Charles as human even to extent he is shown to be.

are there any interviews with Dodi Fayed? I want to get glimpse of what he was really like.

Binged on all four episodes last night. Despite it being absolutely slated by the critics, I enjoyed it very much. (The 'ghosts of Diana and Dodi' really were a bit farfetched, in my opinion). Of course a lot of what was supposed to have gone on between Dodi and Diana must be pure speculation, because nobody will ever know what went on between them in their last hours on Earth, but, my word, what extravagant lives they both lived. Huge yachts, private planes, dinners at the Ritz.... The stuff of pure fantasy.

For what it is, I still found it enjoyable enough (Mrs Sleepy adores everything royal so it's compulsory watching in our house).

The speculative stuff is far more obvious now that we're in the living memory of most viewers which is a bit of an issue as stuff like the supposed engagement could never be substantiated by anyone outside of the tightest circle of royals / Dodi's household staff. It's known that a ring of that title was purchased and Muhammed Al Fayed referenced an engagement but nothing more is known so the writers room were having to make up most of that stuff (along with the lovely final scene between Charles and Di).

Looks like part 2 is going to involve at least a 5 year jump as William heads off to college and the romance with Kate begins... I've heard a few stories from a friend of a friend who was in St. Andrews at the time William was there and I'm curious to see if they use them. Nothing overly salacious tbh but the bit I found interesting was that William apparently used to make use of whichever palace the senior members of the family weren't using in order to socialise with a pretty large circle of friends as a means of trying to have some sort of a "normal" college experience whilst still avoiding the paparazzi. The friend of my friend had apparently been at one of those weekends in Holyroodhouse and found the whole thing utterly bizarre as a student who was from a fairly modest background and was in St. Andrews on a scholarship.

This is an interesting article on how much is true and what is made up for the current run of the last series. Behind a paywall, but a quick google can overcome that.

I find that the longer the crown series goes on, the more im losing interest, I was enthralled at the start but now, cant even really be bothered anymore

Could be because we just remember all the Diana stuff much better, there's been a lot of TV programmes about it

  • Registered Users Posts: 102 ✭✭Lecter8319

Possibly, I also thought Claire Foy was excellent as the queen and hasnt been matched since. Maybe thats part of the reason

It's the bally ballyness of it that makes it all seem so bally bally.

I only watch this because my mother watches it. Even my Dad, who is Scottish gets dragged into it.

I thought those 4 episodes this season were really good TV. Even my Dad grudgingly admitted that it was very good.

Is there a different thread for the second part of the season or something? Where is everyone.

Anyway, I'm up to the episode where William is in St Andrews. Utter yawn fest. Could not give a toss.

The season as a whole was a bit meh. Stronger first half though that was to be expected. It nosedived in interest after the Diana crash. I think though by that stage they were in whack up mode and clearing the decks, not wanting to rely offend the current king and Prince of wales so we got a watered down Wills/Kate piece when I think most of us wanted Charles & Camilla but ask we got was Charles dealing with the consequences of the Di era. Camilla was kind of ‘just there’ really.

It struck me as the same as The Windsors thing too either out of resurrect or fear of backlash, the queen and Philip were absent but everyone else was worthy of satire. Here they had to include Charles & Camilla but kept the kid gloves on and didn’t overly go about taking them off for William/Kate either. Harry though, he’s an outsider now so they could go to town on him.

Really I’d have been happier with a six episode season dealing with the Diana death and aftermath and the jubilee. There was an awful Iot if filler in part 2.

I did love the ending though. Very much set up like the feeling of a play. I think those few minutes were the high point of the season for me.

Didn't the head writer of this also write the much lauded The Queen movie starring Helen Mirren? I can only imagine he wouldn't want to tread back over covered ground.
