Has the R arrived, looking forward to it...do some slappy boucy roads if you can, I'd like to see how she handles the rough stuff..

The Hyundai got a serious roasting over Glencree yesterday I'll get that vid up early next week! Should be getting the R on Monday for a vid then.

I passed you yesterday when I was on the way home. Was driving home from work and did a double take on it. Lovely car in the flesh.

Edit: think I might be in your footage too haha

I've brought up the S3 think it's a flexible car for a couple of kids with the load space and 3 isofix, test drove this one a few weeks ago https://m.carzone.ie/used-cars/Audi/S3-SPORTBACK-2.0-TFSI-310-ST-4/201808229746203
Test drove it at 30k thought the trade in price was a bit low so started trying to get it down a bit and the price went up to 40k, they had it priced wrong in BMW.

BMW? You mean it was originally advertised at 30k ?

Yea it was a mistake through they didn't realise it until I started haggling, Got a PCP quote on it the other day over 36 mts, interest rate was good but the max guaranteed future value was only 14.5k, so it's set to depreciate another 25k over the next 3yrs. Too high depreciation on a used car for me.

If you kept it after the pcp was up, would it become better value?

I don't think so I'd say a very hard car to shift, I'd say most people in that bracket would just buy a gti or golf r, wouldn't keep it more than 3yrs anyway. I like to move them on once there up around 100,000 miles.
The sales rep seemed to think it would be worth more but VW finance don't think so, thought it was a good thing I was getting a low value as i'd have more equity in the car come trade in time. That's a gamble skewed in their favour not mine. I thought a 36% depreciation over 36mts would be fair, giving a future value of around 25 from the 40 asking.

I'm not sure I can go through life without ever owning a hot hatch again... what a fun car.. :D

Great review Mark.... fantastic, very informative and 100% unsterile yet totally professional in delivery.

    Well done.

That’s an excellent piece of work Mark, well done! I can see Top Gear producers calling...!

That Hyundai looks like excellent fun.

I know exactly what you mean re the sentiment about wanting to own a hot hatch again some day.

    Great review

Love how it was more a few minutes of joy rather than a nerdy comparison of facts figures and plastics.

Prefer if you had a few faults too when reviewing although in this case I just want one!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,526 ✭✭✭MarkN

Cheers lads - now if I could just source a sponsor to make the hours of editing worth it! :)

There’s not much to fault really, yeah the interior isn’t to VW standard but in a hot hatch I felt it was important to focus on how true to the word ‘hot’ the car is and the i30N is very capable.

    Golf R next!

The editing looks great. I assume you must have at least one other car/driver with you to do the exterior on the move shots? Or a drone?

Interesting to see how you think the R fares against it. The R is undoubtedly a bit quicker and will feel more assured / planted with the 4WD but I bet the Hyundai is more “fun”. You don’t really get those exhaust pops and bangs in the R. What is there is fake!

My brother came with me in his GTI PP I have a clip of him deliberately swerving side to side behind to give the impression that the GTI can’t get past the Hyundai but it was all about trying to keep the video to around 8 mins. Having another car makes all the difference to the video but yes I use a drone too.

    great video again Mark.
A one year old for below 30k would be a great buy. A lot of performance for the money. it is a pity they don't have a dsg/auto version though.
Apparently they are going to release a N version in the fastback body style which should look great.

Great review if you could call it that, learned nothing about the car just that it's a heap of fun which is all you need to know.

Was it thirsty when you weren't dropping gears for giggles?

11L per 100kms, probably no worse than a GTI. I’ve been driving a 2014 MK7 PP all weekend and it reaffirmed how economical the 640d is - a car with more power than both but €30 got me a week’s driving, I put nearly €40 into the i30N in 48 hours!!

Good videos Mark you seem to enjoy doing them.

Is there ever any suggestion by a dealer or distributor that in order to keep getting cars to review you must be complimentary? Let's say you hated the i30n and said as much in a video.
Would Hyundai be unhappy and tell you not to bother coming back for their new model?

Not at all, in fact I've been encouraged to be honest by some people, if say a boot is just too small in a car and it's a genuine complaint then they're ok with it. Most people agree with the theory that if every car is great then people will assume you're not being fully honest.

By the way, I did a Leaf review recently too but it's probably not petrol-y enough to be in this thread :D

It's not that it's an EV it's just downright ugly from the outside, good review though, if you could get over the looks it seems to make sense for city drivers.
A lot of the Audis have the isofix in the front, that's what was pushing me towards them. A3,A4,A5 etc all have 3 isofix.

Anyone looking at the Audi E-Tron full EV?

It has me absolutely intrigued with the 0% BIK, its makes it hugely attractive.

Assuming a delivered price of €95,550 (hopefully less), this is the same PCP deal on an S6 saloon for comparison:

    €95,550.00
    Deposit Percentage 30%
    Deposit €28,665.00
    Amount Financed €66,885.00
    Period (Months) 36 Months
    Annual Mileage 20km
    Final Payment €30,576.00
    36 Monthly payments of €1,083.08
    APR 1.9%
    Total Cost of Credit
    €2,831.88

It seems to make sense to front load the deposit considering the relative uncertainty regarding the longevity of the BIK deal.

Above figures might see crazy, but this is paid for with pre-tax money, essentially halving the cost of the car in the period in which 0% BIK is active.

25% deposit pushes it to €1219 a month and €22,000 deposit.

My E66 runs me about €7000 a year to run and believe it or not, the above payments are only 20% more, excluding the deposit of course.

Question would be, what will it be worth after 3 years. I would hope around the €47k mark, at which point €65k would be pumped into it, of which approx 50% would be money otherwise sent to the taxman, so a potential positive equity of around €14k after 36 months.

I still have the rose tinted glasses on, but will be talking to my accountant tomorrow about this to get some concrete figures and how to make it work inside my company.

There's HP too, but that's almost more difficult to manage and triple the interest (assuming the E-tron even has 1.9%).

The BIK thing is expected to last for at least 3 years...... and I can't see them rescinding it.

I think you can depreciate an EV 100% in the first year too so the 8 year thing that normally applies, doesn't apply. .... so that would take the siting out of a large deposit.

I'm not sure do PCP apply to company money though, the "personal" bit of the PCP suggests it might not :)

HP could be advantageous, from a cash flow perspective, the cost is spread so to speak. Tax relief applies to the interest payment also :)

Also........."Assuming a delivered price of €95,550 (hopefully less)" is that inc VAT?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

PCP can be done by a company as far as I am aware, I don't know of any restrictions?
PCP or HP obviously depends on the company, PCP would suit me better for various reasons.

Yes the €95k includes VAT, but can VAT be recovered on a non commercial vehicle? If it can this is an absolute no brainer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,831 ✭✭✭carsfan2

As it’s an Audi, you could probably add 5 to 10k of options very easily.
Very unlikely Audi will offer this car at 1.9% interest.
Also I would worry that the rate of improvement in the technology would make a 3/4 year old one very old tech by that time.

Some VAT credit can be claimed on company cars where intended private use is
less than 40%. .....It's only 20% of the VAT though so even on €17k VAT it's not huge now that I think of it :)
    apologies.

True regarding options, I would hope that the €95k is down from €98k after a deal with at least €5k of options already included. Pricing remains to be seen though.

Whatever about battery technology, I'm not sure how much more in-cabin technology will improve, or how drastically. I think we're rapidly getting to the point where screens and interfaces are reaching their design limits, the real tech will be in advanced driverless features and reactive HUDs etc which I think are years off being fully polished.

It's a shame the range of the E-Tron isn't closer to 300-350 miles, it would future-proof it a bit longer.

Yes just did some reading on the rules, seems to be the case. 60% business use is considered 9-5 Monday to Friday too.
