Saw your ad vintage, car looks immaculate. It is a lovely example in fairness. Best of luck with the sale.

Private sales are hard at that kind of money.
There are plenty buyers with the funds that dont need to use a dealer for finance but as I see it, the risk of a scam at that price level just makes it too risky for most.
Selling via a forum where you are known would be a great option.

Is it much easier to get finance from a dealer, than a car loan from a bank? I would have thought similar proof of earnings etc. would be necessary in both cases?

A bank won't give you a car loan for a private sale purchase iirc.

If it's a personal loan they don't care what you do with it, car finance has to be with an approved dealer.

Anyone know how the car spec is checked during vrt process?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,146 ✭✭✭James Bond Junior

Vin is run in Rosslare I think and they check on that. I may be wrong so open to correction.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,398 ✭✭✭vintagevrs

Yeah think that's it. At the appointment they are really just admin checking the car exists, check the millage and match up the vin with paperwork. They then send that off and someone in revenue then checks the vin factory options.

The options are depreciated over 4 years, at 25% per year. After 4 years they add zero value for revenue. So if the car is 1 year old, had 10k options when new they will add 7.5k to the omsp.

They then calculate the vrt cost against this omsp using the co2 band the car is in.

Sometimes car finance companies require nothing in the way of proof. If you are only financing half to 2/3 of the cost, they cannot lose.
Bank loans are a different beast and will always need proofs. That said, i got an unsecured loan at a very good rate without having to jump through too many hoops. I got that before covid and lucky i did as being self employed i would probably be laughed out of the bank at the minute.

Not a car finance product though presumably?

They definitely will give you a personal loan anyway.

Yes, but you specifically asked about car loans, not personal loans.

If a bank won't give you a car finance product I don't think they'll definitely be giving you a personal loan.

Don't be surprised if they have to request a quote from Revenue. I cannot imagine too many 540i being imported so if it doesn't have a VRT stat code on their system then they will have to get one from Revenue. Normally takes about 10 working days but probably longer now due to Covid-19.

A personal loan for the declared purpose of buying a car.
They just forwarded funds to my bank account.

Well I got a loan from my bank for a car no problem, not sure what type of loan it was classified as, but they knew it was for a car, and I never had to provide any details of where I was buying it, or what car it was.

That wasn't car finance..... It was most likely a personal loan.

Did you move on from the A5?

I'm currently driving an 11 2.0l tdci Mondeo. It gets flogged up and down the motorway to duvling every day around 140to 150 miles a day. I really fancy getting into a Gtd golf 15 or 16 towards the end of the year or early next year. I have a few reservations though. Comfort wise can anyone who drives a gtd let me know is it a comfortable car to spend a few hours a day at 120km/h in. The mondeo has treated me well and barely missed a beat in 4 years but the seats I alwaya felt a little soft and unsupportive. I don't want the next car to be the same. And space wise is the inside of a golf cramped. I expect it to be much smaller than the mondeo but will it carry 3 passengers handily enough.

I was essentially commenting on your point that a bank won't give you a car loan for a private sale, you can definitely get a loan from a bank to buy a private sale car. Whatever the classification of the loan(car or personal), it is possible.

    You planning on same mileage?
I'd not bother with a GTD
It'll be plenty comfy but they hold a lot of value at 3 or 4 years old. You'd then hammer the resale with that mileage.
For purely motorway munching and good seats, maybe a Volvo.

I've a Leon FR, based on GTD, previous was a 520d (well a Kuga, few months between) and the 5 was superior on motorway. Leon is fine but the longer wheelbase and wide cabin in the 5 just ate miles.

Yeah the mileage will be the same roughly. I'm considering trying to get into a 12 or 13 f10 but I for some reasong just want to buy a golf gtd before the end of my time driving a diesel.
The style of them really appeals to me. I take your point though, the mileage I put on her will obviously hit the resale and I will be buying at a high price at the age of car im looking for. Its something I'll need to decide if it really bothers me or not i suppose.
If I keep it long enough some resale value might be left in her as they seem to plateau and hold well once they go over 10 years old from my research so far. But then God knows what sort of engines will be the norm in 5 more years.

New 4 series and 5 series LCI. The 4 still looks dreadful. I like the updates on the 5 though. Classy looking car.

Completely agree with you, the five looks fabulous but the four is just awful

    What I said is true.
A personal loan is not a car loan. One can get a personal loan and buy a car with it but that doesn't make the personal loan a car finance product / car loan.

Bizarrely, i'd have the 4 over the 5. 5 is plain jane and not exactly pretty either (5:55), i've never been a fan of the G30s looks, the 4 is odd but it stands out.

Pretty nice 530e for sale here. He will struggle to sell it at that money on a private sale.
