Didn't think there was any ATM in the NGA network? Isn't it pure IP?

so far all of the Eir FTTH speedtests Ive seen have ATM overheads

Hmm. It's presented end-to-end as Ethernet, and the core is MPLS. I didn't think it had any ATM components at all.

I thought the same, thought ATM was just in DSL products not FTTH.

I ordered ffth extreme 1000gbps three weeks ago. Got install date for today. No engineer showed up. Rang eir yesterday and they confirmed engineer was scheduled for today rang again today and was told scheduled for the 16th.

Apparently if you don't get a text message the day before to confirm installation you have to ring them to confirm new install day. But they don't send a text message to tell you the installation date has changed.

    Shocking service......

When I was ordering last Monday I picked the earliest install date which is this Friday in the morning, Exchange went live today.

So far I have only had 2 emails, 1 generic one when you order and the second was a break down of the package I ordered and it said they will be in touch by email to confirm installation date, haven't heard anything since.

So if I see no email tomorrow, I should ring them immediately?.

I made this thread for people on eir rural blue line FTTH please keep here and don't post in Eircom FTTH 66 towns 1 Gb thread about rural FTTH rollout.

That what I gathered from speaking with support. I'd wait till 4pm tomorrow and if no email ring about installation date

New replacement poles was done ages ago in our area..something like 3-5 years ago...
Same here, but it was when they added an extra copper multicore to the line.

    Great stuff!
Can you do a wired test? Presumably you are on the 150 package
I'd be interested to know if there's any loss at all on fibre directly connected to the modem
My guess is that's exactly 150

Yep, on 150mbps, its way more than i need but I'm very happy I have it now!!
The wired test is exactly the same.

Pretty sure there's no ATM used on the FTTH path. It's IP end to end. I wonder are they using the Mega and Giga in the same manner as storage space is advertised. That would mean:

Start with 1KB = 1024 and then multiply by 1000 for 1MB instead of by 1024 as you should.

Then 146MB (measured) in those terms could be called 149.504MB (storage) rounding up nicely to 150MB (storage).

Its IPoE to the client device(with Eir, PPPoE for OLOs) which can be over either Eth or ATM. Im not sure why I thought the ATM component still existed though, I suppose it would only be between DSLAM and the exchange agg if it was as Eir route at that level (OLOs route at the RAS).

Looking at the Tech Man its VLAN'd through to egress so thats all eth then. That means a frame overhead of about 1.4% for MPLS and .11q not accounting for OLOs IP. Sounds about right but Im probably out of my depth here.

EDIT: Dont the F1000s state its PTM ? Doh, clearly not ATM.

There's no ATM in the openeir VDSL2 or FTTH access networks or backhaul. The only ATM is in ADSL access lines and a small number of DSLAMs with ATM backhaul.

Am I the only person who read the title of this thread as "Eir rural FILTH thread"?

    I'll get me coat.

The only ATM you would possibly encounter would be very old legacy ADSL on some far flung tiny exchange somewhere. Eir's used IP/ethernet for DSL for a long time, even on old ADSL products. AFAIK, even the oldest DSL products when iStream launched, used PPPoE and never PPPoA. BT Ireland may have used PPPoA though.

The "NGN" (Next Generation Network) is all-IP based, including for legacy services like Voice and ISDN, which is would typically be partially using VoIP and soft switches further up the network, even if the bit that connects your line to the local exchange might still be the same tech it's always been.

All eir's ADSL lines use ATM. The PPP on ADSL lines is PPPoEoA with the modem adding the oA on the way out.

The hint is in the VPI and VCI ;)

OpenEir have two classes of ADSL product Bistream EA (Ethernet Access) which uses all IP and Bitstream VC (Virtual Circuit) which uses ATM.

The Next Generation Broadband products are ethernet all the way, the classic ones aren't.

The key difference is "Next Generation" in the branding. ADSL vs ADSL2+ are only the copper line interface between the modem and the DSLAM and aren't indicative of the backhaul.

Incidentally there are also different attenuation losses depending on the cable the used.

    They used 0.4mm (14dB/km) , 0.5mm (12 dB/km) and 0.6mm (10dB/km) cable.

The FTTC products are totally IP based and obviously the FTTH is too.

Croom still has no signs of fiber on the roads \ areas I have checked..

Was bright when i got home last night so took a detour and checked some more roads..

Found 2 that have fiber strung and splitters in place..

I still have not checked them all.

Fully thing is the road they have done is mainly in ducts with only sections on poles.

Couple of the roads they have not done are either all poles or with 1 or 2 sections of 5 to 20 meters ducted with the rest on poles..

You would imagine that it would be faster and easier to string it off poles that open ducts..

  • Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 28,850 Mod ✭✭✭✭oscarBravo

Where ducting is available, it's always preferable. Trees can't bring down fibres in ducts.

    Oh I agree..

What I was saying (badly) is that if they were just trying to connect houses in a hurry you would imagine it would have been faster to do the roads that were served by poles rather than duct.. Stringing fiber on poles, would, I imagine, be faster than fishing through ducts.

it must certainly is, they spent 9 months working on the ducts here, granted the visits were spread very far apart, but the pole sections were done in an afternoon and then another visit for the splice box's.

I see siro digging up footpaths for the last 3 weeks for ducting - great to see the forward planning of our developers and councils  And I'm sure the footpaths will be repaired perfectly after them :D

no word about my installation for tomorrow, think I better get on to Eir!

    Kinvarra update.

The cable crew are nearly at my house. Passed them this morning only about half a km away from the soccer pitch.

They are making great progress this morning and had hung about 3km of it on the poles by 10.30am.

Still lots of work left with splice boxes etc but it is getting closer and closer.

KN installing ducting along N22 road after lissivigeen this morning in Kerry. I think that's the ballyspillane exchange.

If anybody knows would the Fibre that will be going into those ducts continue on to the headford exchange area or are exchanges kept unconnected? Is there a main fibre line feed to Killarney and neighbouring exchanges connected to Killarney?

Hi Gonzo I was able to preorder FTTH too but they told me I wouldn't get an installation date until the exchange went live. I then got an install date of the following week but it couldn't be installed due to an incorrect DP. Finally got it installed today. I did get an email with the installation date and also a phonecall the day before from the install team. The phone number for the installation team is 015366550. If you ring them and give them your mobile number they'll be able to tell you your installation date. Hope that helps!

I'll give that a go tomorrow, I ordered 2 days before the exchange went live, yet was able to pick an install date from tomorrow onwards. Ive posted a message on the Eir forum but will also give that number a ring tomorrow!.

There is a chance that they could just arrive in the morning but I doubt it.

I was able to pick an install date too but the exchange hadn't gone live at that stage- it seems to be a week from when you book it so if you order on Thursday the earliest install seems to be the following Thursday but if you order Friday, Saturday or Sunday you seem to be able to pick Friday as an install date.
