Cutting to ads straight after the anthems and 10 seconds after the final whistle is the most annoying part of the coverage for me. It really kills the atmosphere watching the game.

I've also seen the Gareth Thomas Guinness ad and the Oreo ad far too many times in the last 3 days!

Nothing to do with TV3 but I felt it was very bad form that Twickenham Stadium were playing Rolling Stones during the Fijian Cibi too!

Pretty sure they didn't play Rolling Stones over it. Unless someone who was actually there can tell me otherwise I'm fairly sure they didn't show it live, came back after the ad break and showed a little clip of it with the live audio from the stadium which was then playing the Rolling Stones.

The ads right after the anthems and whistle are probably the ones they get most money for because they're guaranteed the biggest audience at that point. People tend to put the kettle on at half time or go for a wee or whatever. Sticking the ads in when everyone is definitely watching is where the money is. Still extremely annoying.

    EXACTLY

Your seeing games in a world cup that come around every 4 years, an event for teams like say Japan, who have an opportunity to play on a world stage, and they dream of beating the Boks, and when it actually happens, you'd like to see the immediate reaction of all those involved. They're the moments that you remember as well from world cups, not fcuking ads for windowlene or bran flakes!

The TV3 coverage outside of Conor McNamara is fine... I can't stand him. Every word of his is uttered like he's auditioning for some voice over gig selling carpets or furniture.

    TuuuurrrrrryyyyeeeeeeeEEEE

    Abysmal.

And to add insult to injury; the content of what he says is terrible to boot. Cliche ridden and clearly devoid of any real knowledge of the game of rugby.

    +1

I was looking in yesterday and it came across like he was announcing celebrity arrivals at the Oscars or something like that.

But still overkill with the ads and lack of respect for the viewer overall.

I wonder are tv3 aware people think they're doing a terrible job?

Only way to deal with that - is just to hit the off button. Or better complain to the companies advertising - that might just make them think.

I watch the games on itv hd on freesat. Tv3 must be losing a huge amount of ad revenue by not having the saorview channel in hd.

But the extra ad revenue would be offset by the cost of transmission fees for going HD on Saorview. The World Cup will be over in a few weeks but those transmission costs will keep piling up; they obviously decided it wasn't worth it.

(TV3 have already been in dispute with the Saorview transmission company over fees for their SD signal, so maybe they didn't want to be writing more large cheques for HD...

Watching both TV3SD and ITVHD the weekend and have to say Tv3 are doing a great job. Without doubt the picture quality is vastly improved over the blurry Champions League games we were getting a while ago. Its clear that the main commentator doesn't watch rugby regularly but he has improved since the first game. I love the Southern Hemisphere commentators. Think their accents fit the rugby perfectly. Its a shame you have to subscribe to watch in HD but I have to say theres very little difference between TV3 in standard definition than ITV in HD.

Overall I think Tv3 have done great so far and will be watching them over ITV.

Was on my way out of Cardiff yesterday and missed the Japan game, can't seem to get it on 3 Player, am I blind or is it just not there?

Can I use ITV player from Ireland?

Its not there on the UPC 3 player but its on the web 3 player.
    Which is crapola..

TV3 really are ruining everybodys world cup. No HD on saorview, dead ass commentators and the worst, the very worst.. the ad breaks after the anthems..

    Sick.

In fairness, it wasn't quite as it appeared.

I too was appalled at what appeared to be going on with the music on the PA during the Cibi, but another kind poster here clarified to me that what happened was that TV3 played delayed footage of the Cibi with live audio from the stadium.

Cheers for clarifying! I was raging at the time about it!

Watching the Ireland Canada game on the on demand thingy on UPC and I'm dizzy with the way the images are. It's like watching it on one of those flippy books with pictures.

Have sky coming today so will watch ITV from here on in.

Ya its a fairly old HD tele now at this stage but really cant tell much of a difference. Like the difference between bbcSD and bbchd is huge so I dont think its the tele.

I actually tuned in ITVHD last week. The channel on the SKY box says ITVHD but when I turn on the channel it just says ITV in the top right hand corner of the screen .It doesnt say ITVHD. Maybe its not in HD at all?

Ah there's a fair oul difference between standard and HD TV3. Their HD picture is good.

Their problem, as the whole country have already pointed out, is their ads. It kills any sort of atmosphere pre, mid, and post match.

It's like just having made fabulous love to your other half and immediately getting kicked out into the cold, naked, through the bedroom window. Passion killer.

The sound on tv3 is also terrible. When I switch over from itv I have to raise the volume by 3 or 4 notches.
Personally I am looking forward to watching the Ire matches from a neutral perspective.
In fairness TV3 are operating in a tough environment with no licence revenue. Without them we wouldn't have champions league on both tues and wed nights.
Some of ITV's games are only on ITV4 as xfactor etc is on ITV and itv4 is not hd on freesat.

I'd have to disagree with the idea that this means that it's TV3's sound that is terrible - higher volume usually means the channel is engaging in sound levelling, which flattens the volume spikes and troughs out to some kind of mid-point. For the most part this sounds awful. Not saying TV3 has good sound or anything, but just saying louder doesn't mean better!

Haven't had any problems with the picture or sound quality on TV3... but those ads.

Luckily enough I can get access to ITVHD on my Sky HD box (I think? I'll try later) so I'll be watching the rest of the tournament there.

I suppose TV3 realise that a large enough % of viewers have little or no choice but to watch on TV3 so they couldn't care less about p**sing people off with inappropriate ad breaks.

Am I the only one who can't find Japan vs South Africa on the 3 player?

Highlights show is unwatchable because the picture quality is absolutely rubbish, dizzying stuff. Pity anyone watching in Saorview. They've dropped the ball big time, coverage is pants.

Haven't watched any of the games on tv3 because of the HD issue. When they won the rights I tweeted them and and asked would it be available in HD , they confirmed it would but neglected to tell me that it would cost me an extra €120 and wouldn't be available to those on soarview at all.

Poor form this day and age .

To get ITV1 HD as some have asked: (copied and pasted from here)

To add ITV1 HD in STV or UTV regions you need to do this.

Press "Services" on the remote control (or from the Guide go to "Options" on the top menu).

Press the down arrow, and then scroll across to "Add Channels".

Press "Select" or the down arrow, to highlight the frequency.

Using the number pad on the remote, enter the following frequency: 10.832

Press the down arrow, and use the left or right arrow to change the Polarisation from V to H.

Check that the Symbol Rate is 22.0 and that the FEC is 5/6, and adjust if necessary.

Press the yellow button to Find Channels.

Once it has finished scanning, find & highlight one of the channels "ITV1 HD" (there should be two of them) and press the yellow button to store it, and then press Select to continue.

You can now view ITV HD by going to "Other Channels" within Services/Options (it's next to "Add Channels") & pressing Select to reveal channel ITV1 HD & then pressing Select again to view it.

Are there any fewer ads on ITV though, because it didn't seem that way to me? I'm not trying to come across as a TV3 rep here or anything, I just genuinely haven't seen much of a difference in the technical aspects of the coverage between the UK and Irish broadcasters. I think it comes down to preferences in analysts to be honest. Actually, I was thinking of trying TV3 video feed with a properly synced up BBC radio audio.

Don't shoot me if wrong but according to a podcast I heard today UTV/ITV are providing all the actual camera work for the games. So all TV3 are doing is borrowing the same coverage from UTV/ITV and just putting there commentary team on top of it. So posting that moving to ITV because of poor camera work is pointless.

There was a bit of a dig on podcast from a BBC commentator about the coverage and how poor the playback for TMO has been so far. More or less he said UTV/ITV haven't a clue what they are doing because they only get coverage every 4 years....ouch.....

That's usually how it works with the local editor choosing what everyone sees.

Remember in for French games they used to show a kicker lining up a kick and then have his face in cloud Dracula like :pac:
