Fortunately I managed to discover a spare base layer in my bag to help "wick away" the water.

bugger to that. i've on more than one occasion found myself carrying a couple of servers around on a summers day, and bailed into the shower after and lived with a few short lived water spots on my t-shirt, as a preferable alternative to walking around steaming for the rest of the day.

I was in a meeting all day Wednesday sporting my boards jersey when I forgot to bring a shirt to work. I am getting worried about how many times I have forgotten clothes for work. Tap dancing round the lab in cycling shoes, lycra instead of slacks (which to be fair, just look like skinny jeans when I have a lab coat on), going commando.

    Please listen to this.
    I've been a fan of Leonard Cohen's since 1969.
We've been through a lot together.
He helped me, when I was very unwell.
    R.I.P.

"They will bind you with love that is graceful and green as a stem" is one of my favourite lines in any literary medium. Really trips beautifully in 3/4 too.

I first heard him through the tribute album ' I'm your fan' . Great record.

And the start of the never-ending rise of Hallelujah. Virtually every version now made is really a cover, probably indirectly, of John Cale's arrangement on that record.

What are the chances that these wheels would kill me?

    https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Carbon-700C-38mm-road-wheel-group-a-bicycle-wheel-rim-the-road-wheel-group/324598_32297187524.html

Less than $300 for a pair of carbon clinchers

    23% + €20 duty?
    Would be about €340 total

I notice from the ad, that these wheels have Novatec Flower Drums, which can't be bad.

First puncture for a few years and my pump quits! This is at 07:15 on the way to work. No other cyclist I asked had a pump so I ended up taking the luas out to citywest with the bike in three pieces to get around the stupid no bike rule.

It was not a good morning. It's the first time in seven years of commuting that the bike has let me down and I ended up not able to get going again. Still nice enough morning for a walk to the luas.

    €300 + €20(?)duty + shipping = Total cost.

Now add 23% VAT on top of all that so minimum €394...

    Price is $274.50
Do customs give a 1/1 exchange rate on $ to €?
I've never imported from outside the EU before.

They use the amount you were charged. If they're not happy with the declaration on the packet, they'll ask you for proof. Then they'll work off the euro value.

OTOH, it might just get through to you without any customs...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,983 ✭✭✭✭tuxy

    So $274.50 = €252.39 + €20
    €272.39 x 1.23 = €335.03

Would that be about right? That's why I was saying about €340 in the earlier post.

I probably won't order, seems like a big risk but the price is interesting. If it was an item that wasn't a safety issue I'd take the chance.

GAH! Hate it when a really nice tyre with really low mileage gets ripped beyond repair.

Anyone here use the bike racks in UCD? Is leaving a lock on the rack permitted or are they removed by security? Thanks.

This won't help, but from my 3 years there (2 studying, 1 working) security never paid much attention to bike racks or such things.

Richiview is quiet though and probably less troublesome than anywhere else. Nicest part of the campus by a long way
Thanks Weepsie! Don't fancy having to carry a heavy chain and padlock around!

For future ref, as an emergency measure it's good to replace the valve cap on one of your wheels with one of these

    http://www.adverts.ie/other-bike-parts-accessories/presta-to-schrader-bicycle-tyre-valve-converter-adapter/7824727

(You'll get it at your local bike shop for a couple of quid.) This way you can wheel your bike to the nearest petrol station and give it a puff of air to keep the tyre going till you can get to a bike shop.

Must have fancy petrol station up in the pale. I drove around to 6 or 7 of them in my town and failed to find one that worked. Ended up using my track pump on the car.

anyone here have any experience of terry dolan carbon frames?
mcquaid cycles in finglas have a bike for sale which is an intriguing prospect - a terry dolan carbon frame, ultegra, and krysium wheels, €1700. seems to have been assembled in house rather than an off the peg bike. chap in the shop reckons it's a 50cm, but a lot of their frames seem to be sized deceptively small. my main concern is i think i saw the same bike in the window two years ago so i very strongly suspect it's not 2017 stock.

shane ross is currently on morning ireland arguing for a register of interests for judges.
