[*]If you can re-educated Joe Duffy by talking about the hate speech being used by radio jocks - cyclists as 'vermin', 'give him a bang of your walking stick', 'the lycra brigade', 'they all go through red lights', etc, and how this hate speech endangers lives, that would be a good thing.

You must not listen to him often. He can be the most ignorant man on radio, there's no correcting him, and he just takes the populist view on everything. Often it leaves him on the wrong side when he misjudges things, but that just leads to an ad break and him returning afterwards on the 'right' side.

You're right; I hardly ever listen to Irish radio. BBC World service, France Inter, France Info (the latter two without understanding much, though more as I go along) - oh, wait, I do listen to Lyric sometimes, and to RnaG late-night music.

But the shock jocks grate on me so much even when I hear them in a shop that I wouldn't listen of my own volition.

On the other hand, I know from experience that they speak with the voice of the current beliefs; Gay Byrne, a shock jock of his day, was all anti-contraception-no-divorce when that was the centrist belief, but changed with the times. They all do. So if you can swing the centrist belief by vigorously putting another view - as happened successively with contraception, divorce, Magdalens, etc - you can change what people are being fed.

just spotted someone on a genesis on glasnevin avenue whose jersey was matched perfectly to the paintjob on the bike. that's a little *too* co-ordinated, maybe?

Transport for London, which the mayor controls, has devised a “direct vision standard” that rates vehicles according to how well the driver can see the truck’s surroundings. Vehicles rated zero star will be banned from 2020, and one- and two- star from 2024. TfL said 18 per cent of lorries in London were rated zero.

Trucks with zero stars are those typically designed for off-road use and were involved in 70 per cent of cyclist deaths caused by HGVs, the mayor’s office said. Lorries were involved in 58 per cent of cyclist deaths and 23 per cent of pedestrian deaths on the roads. Last year nine cyclists were killed on London’s roads and 378 were seriously injured.

    Sounds like a great idea.

Irish team for the World Championships in Doha has been announced.

Sam Bennett will lead the team in the men’s road race with Matt Brammeier and Ryan Mullen protecting their sprinter. Mullen will also take part in the time trial, with Nicolas Roche also competing in the discipline.

Anna Turvey is set to be Ireland’s only representative in the women’s side, and will compete in the individual time trial.

Eddie Dunbar, Michael O’Loughlin, Matthew Teggart and Daire Feeley will race in the U23s, while Jake Gray, Ronan Toumey and Xeno Young take part in the junior events.

Cycling along past Rathmines Garda Station; a bus pulled in ahead of me at the stop, I checked behind, signalled right and moved out into the right-hand lane where I would take Grosvenor Road.

A driver - obviously imminently about to give birth / suffering extreme diarrhoea / oxygen tank about to give out - came up behind me and went right across the solid white line, then cut in front of me and the bus to take the left-hand fork along Rathgar Avenue.

We really, really need an ad campaign to persuade drivers (and cyclists, and pedestrians) that they don't have to get there (wherever 'there' is) so immediately, and they could slow down, calm themselves and take a more meditative and courteous approach.

I'm not speaking here from the position of Mother Teresa - I've broken red lights when it was freezing cold, or when I was scared of an area, or when there was absolutely nothing coming for miles; but in general, Jesus, why the hell is everyone in such a crazy hurry that they do things like this?

    Working for Deliveroo

    http://www.independent.ie/life/dublin-deliveroo-worker-i-fell-off-my-bike-when-i-rang-the-call-centre-the-first-thing-they-asked-was-if-the-food-was-okay-35090382.html
I wasn't badly hurt, but I was shaking like a leaf. Falling off your bike is never a nice feeling, especially if you've been clipping along when it happens.
As soon as I'd pulled myself together, I immediately phoned the Deliveroo call centre. I wanted to let them know that I'd been delayed and the reason why. No sooner had I said to the operator that I'd just fallen off my bike, than they were asking me if the food was okay. That was the priority - making sure nothing had happened to the food. Me - the person delivering the order and the only human point of contact a customer would have - just didn't seem to matter to the person who answered the phone to me.

speed with guy martin is on at the moment; he's trying to break the record for the fastest human powered boat. an engineer just told him he'd need to generate 1000W to get the design he's working on hydrofoiling, and 600W to sustain it there.

Starting point is at the Dublin Bikes stand outside the Natural History Museum, on the western side of Merrion Square.

Assemble from 5.30pm, the cycle will begin around 5.45pm.

Bring your bike, and if you have a bell or whistle bring those too.

You can actually get straw hats with flowers on them to wear over your helmet, which would look rather Edwardian-giant-lady's-hat on my bulbous helmet.

I see a lady around Dublin 4 with one of the helmets that's disguised as a normal hat. It looks ok, but it still looks like a disproportionately big hat with a strap and buckle.

My bike is off the road now until I replace the fork. Further investigation shows a crack in the carbon, if ever I needed to go for a spin it's today. I'm just back after a week of annual leave and my 'cover' completely knackered things up. Currently hiding now because I'm supposed to be in a meeting at 2pm with the CEO to give a monthly update

Just tell CEO that cracked carbon is a seriously bad situation and are working tirelessly in finding a replacement fork and that you hope to have better news for him next month.

I have not read his other books but The Rider is an exceptional read. I read it years ago and was heading on holidays to the Cevennes in France where the book is based so I read it again. Beautiful story that is very well told.

Chuchote, did I see you at 4pm yesterday on the Clonskeagh Road? A Mondrian/Battenberg-clad cyclist passed me. I have only this to go on.

You did, begob! I'm cycling over daily to walk a friend's dogs while she's away. Next time, say hi!
