Marvel’s Luke Cage

Alfre Woodard is going from leader of the free world to local politician. The State Of Affairs and Desperate Housewives star is close to inking a deal to co-star opposite Mike Colter (The Good Wife) in Netflix’s 13 episode drama series Marvel’s Luke Cage.
Luke Cage will star Colter as the eponymous superhero. The character will first appear in Netflix’s second Marvel series A.K.A. Jessica Jones, before seguing to Marvel’s Luke Cage as the series lead. During the course of an investigation in New York City, private investigator Jessica Jones encounters the enigmatic Luke Cage – a man whose past has secrets that will dramatically alter Jessica in ways she could never have imagined.
Woodard is set to play Minetta, a powerful woman in local politics who will have an impact on Luke Cage’s life. According to Deadline, who broke the news of the impending casting, the character is a new take on well known Marvel villain Black Mariah, a professional criminal and drug dealer who is something of a nemesis to bot Luke Cage and Iron Fist.
Marvel’s Luke Cage will be the third series to come out of Netflix’s bumper deal with Marvel for four television series and a miniseries tying the four together (in a similar vein to the Avengers films on feature side). The series is being produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television, with Jeffrey Bell serving as the executive producer. Cheo Hodari Coker is the showrunner and will pen the first two episodes. Production begins later this year for a 2016 global premiere on Netflix.

Simone Missick has joined the cast as Missy, "a woman with a strong sense of justice." It's suggested that she is Misty Knight.

    Official synopsis.

Unsurprising but good. I wouldn't be too surprised if they ran concurrently in parts tbh.

Hmm, after watching JJ, it'll be interesting to see how that will happen.

In other casting news, we're meeting Claire Temple's mommy in Luke Cage.

    Spoiler from JJ.

    Probably a
flash back to when Luke was being controlled

They need to have a pretty good supporting cast, because having watched Jessica Jones in full, I really don't think Luke Cage has the charisma, the interest, or even the personality to make for an interesting main character.

What was the 4th series they doing or was it said yet?

That (presumably shortened & edited) fight scene was pretty epic. Netflix hires good choreographers, that's for sure

That and every show needs to have a kickass corridor fight scene to top what was done previously :)

I haven't gotten around to watching JJ yet. Would ye say I'd need to get it watched before watching LC?

Absolutely. Luke was in a good few episodes of JJ so there'll probably be a good few mentions of her and what happened there. Wouldn't be surprised if she shows up in Luke Cage too. Plus it has a fair bit about his backstory in JJ too.

Plus, it's a good watch. Really well done throughout.

Not sure about that; without delving into spoilers, he's not really all that pivotal to events in Jessica Jones that I'd worry his own series would spend a lot of time mulling over events from that previous show. A couple of things that happen him affect Jones' own story all right & pretty profoundly, but the reverse isn't as true IMO.

Its not important but it is good to get a background for the character but like you said not essential.

Agree with Penn though, if your going to watch this, why not watch JJ anyway

Well I guess no more than those who watch The Flash but not Arrow, or vice versa; if Jessica Jones didn't interest you, for whatever reason, it wouldn't be a hindrance to watching Luke Cage.

It's more a question of time rather than anything else - too many series to catch up on. :o

The it is not essential but if you go with the defenders for the next series, it might be good to see the past relationship so it does not seem confusing or you don't miss why attitudes are what they are.

JJ is definitely worth a watch on its own merits though

Why would anyone watch the shows out of their intended order...?!

Edit: I say this assuming you're intending on watching JJ at some point and just wondering about prioritising LC. I may be way off.

One of the best things about the Marvel shows on Netflix, is each one tries its hardest to beat the corridor fight scene from daredevil season 1 :D

Have watched the first two episodes and really enjoying it. It's a bit slow mind but it's working so far but if it keeps up this pace for the whole season I might get a bit bored.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 61,272 ✭✭✭✭Agent Coulson

I'm enjoying the pacing of the show to be honest.

Five episodes in and it's really good I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,503 ✭✭✭✭Also Starring LeVar Burton

Just watched the first episode. Feels a lot more adult than Daredevil or Jessica Jones, but maybe I'm misremembering how age appropriate those actually were. Very enjoyable first episode anyway - sets the tone nicely for the series.

The music in this is just superb!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

    One episode in.

Feels like they've gone to gory violence very fast but I'm think that is maybe because they feel they don't need to introduce Luke Cage as his intro has been done in Jessica Jones. That left a hole that got filled by the baddies!

I think it's got potential. Will see where it goes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,984 ✭✭✭Venom

Five episodes in and loving it tho its much slower going than Daredevil.

The amount of actors from "The Wire" in this is pretty mad.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,115 ✭✭✭✭Nervous Wreck

Four episodes in. Fantastic stuff. A lot of Easter egg stuff I didn't think we'd see. Great so far!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,501 ✭✭✭✭Slydice

Second episode has gotten me hooked to the story.

I haven't noticed folks from the wire yet. I mistakenly thought one of the guys in the first episode was Marlo but just from the back of his head. Then it showsed his face and I was like ... nah. I'll keep an eye out though. It'll just give the series even more thumbs up.

It's unreal how they present these. I hate the Marvel movies and shows with a passion but in the 3 series netflix have on the go now it's amazing how the same and how different they are in terms of shades of dark. Hats off to them.

The netflix ones come across as "we ain't checking for brains on the way in so no need to leave it at the door Sir!" and I mean that in a positive way.
