Could you PM me the details with the Focus.. Im not pushed just yet on selling the Corolla, but want to see what interest there is in it. Dont think I would get anything as reliable as it again unless I bought another one!

Didn't think you'd take me seriously! You can have it next summer if you'll be interested then!

If the insurers find out you've made a renewal after an incident without informing them which will later result in a claim, you're getting f*****d.

If she has NCB protection or not, her premium is going. If it was only a small tip, are you sure you want to claim for it?
Well if it comes to it she can always refund anything they pay out, I am assuming there won't be a whiplash claim :)

Thanks OSI, thought as much, insurers were duly informed anyway.
As for paying for damage, the GF reversed back in the MX5, it has a few scratches on it but apparently the other car (2008 Mazda 3) has quite a lot of damage to the rear quarter and bumper that she reversed into.
So, rear quarter panel and bumper of a 2008 Mazda 3 made complete sh*t of, I would expect this to cost around €2000.
    Whiplash? We'll see about that.
But looking like there's no way we can pay that, insurance will have to do their job on this one.

Europcar shafted me years ago when I rented in Scotland, said I damaged the car. They had no attendant at the airport when I dropped it back and I had to leave the keys in a letterbox. It was parked in the corner of the car park, said there was damage all along side the near side of the car (which unless the wall fell on it would be hard) they then said all the offside was damaged,
I asked for body shop receipts or photos of the damage. They just kept fobbing me off. I fought them for a while then decided it was ruining my weeks and just let it go, £500.
Got full insurance with any rentals I got after that and vowed to avoid them in the future,

Sounds bad. I got the full insurance so I can go back with just steering wheel but if i lose the keys....

In an unexpected twist all thoughts of selling my Alfa have gone out the window. It's going from not being driven for weeks to my new mile muncher. New job ftw

Seems all the Petrol E39's on the forum are knocked out, mine with gearbox problems, yours is overheating and Sobaneks just cracked the expansion tank and sprayed coolant everywhere earlier :pac:

Is this car breakdowns and issues across the forum the last few weeks contagious I hope not. I suppose it's the joys of being into cars all the hardship they put us through and we still love them :)

Out of curiosity, is it possible to see how much life is left on a timing belt my looking at it?

You can add my e39 to that list. Alternator not working and need to send it off to be reconditioned and then there is something up with the rear hub.

Well the rubber doesn't wear away as such. But if you take of the cover belt shouldn't be frayed or broken at the edges and there should be no cracking at all on the rubber. Any of that and it's a bad sign and would need to be changed. But then even if it looks good it may still be due to be changed no definite way of telling really. Do you know when it was last changed.

No. There are no markings on the cover and nothing in the service book about it either.

There's "01 Punto 1.2 pet" written on the gearbox though so I assume that has been changed with one from a breaker yard before.

Well, yeah, on the bright side, the engine will be okay even if the belt snaps. :P

Almost 200k km and still running fine! But yes it's not been used as much as I'd like. It's driving like a new car mind!

The timing belts these days aren't usually the ones that cause failure. It's a lot more common for tensioners and idle pulleys to fail or get stuck causing the belt to come off, which in effect causes the same outcomes as a snapped belt.

It's not easy to spot a soon-to-go tensioner or idle pulley though.

Jesus, I've not had a problem with the bangernomics C5 yet and I've done 7000 miles in it since I got it.

Well "these days" in my case is more like late 90's, early 2000's. :pac:

Is yours the 1242 engine? That's in our 2014 500, pretty much identical.

They're quite close still but the newer engines are interference.

Yes but I'm pretty sure the belt has been changed at least once?
