Mob Rule.

What can be done about these internet mobs who decide to start a campaign of abuse and destroy the lives of whoever happens to be in the news this week?
The Lion man(who did nothing illegal) has been attacked unmercifully. Just the other day some on here were advocating starting a campaign against a particular Judge.
Quite a few of the internet heroes who participate in these things I suspect have little understanding or real interest but are simply in it for the thrill and come next week will have completely forgotten their passionate crusade.

Is there a solution to the modern equivalent of townsfolk with pitchforks?

Cut America (and potentially the UK) off from the Internet for the next few decades.

What he did was not illegal. It was, however, ****. Most people, when confronted with **** behaviour, let the individual concerned know that what they did was ****, and that they themselves are more than likely, a ****.

In the good old days, this may have been one or two people confronting the **** about his **** behaviour. Now it's one or two, times a million or so.

    Fair play to them all.

    ****.

The right, sensible and long term solution then would be to campaign to change the law.

Mobs don't like to use reason though do they?

Create a hate mob to expose hate mob organisers.

Sympathy for that gobsh##e that killed the lion - no chance. Dunno the other one with the judge that u are talking about.
The more abuse the better for that clown, might stop a few going over when they see the abuse he got. Then again maybe not with these gun loving yank hicks

What the Lion killer did was illegal. Hence why his two guides have been arrested.

I don't approve of mob rule, or witch hunts on the internet. I think it's lazy as well as cruel. But that is the time we live in and the internet is very much ruled by mob thought.

In the same way that a feeling spreads over a mob that's willing and ready to be riled up, on the internet, I get the feeling that people feel more free to express the first emotion that comes to mind as regards a situation, and do not temper their words or think twice in how they phrase them as they might if speaking to a person face to face. Then another person reads it and allows themselves to be provoked into an emotional reaction too. Then a troll comes in and stirs **** up. Then someone who was borderline aboit it all reads the emotional backlash from two people and has an emotional reaction of "not fair!" and guns for the first two commentators. Then it snowballs. The original target of the chaos is not really considered to be a person, more like an abstract representation of whatever it is that's pissing people off. And just like with a mob, there is a lessened sense of responsibility of word and action and then things just get out of hand. Unfortunately, lives may be ruined before the mob finds something else to distract it.

I don't think there is a way to solve this, really. The human race will have to mature more first, and see the internet as a method of communication with other people, and not just a sounding board for the loudest voices.

Having said all that, it is not yet decided whether or not he did do something illegal. It appears that the guides certainly did, it has yet to be decided whether Palmer knew it was.

You can't fart crooked in this social media dominated world, without a mob coming after you about the direction of the odour.

Take a small business for example. Regularly I see campaigns on FB drumming up all kinds of stories about how they were unhappy with the service of a particular business. It then turns into an exaggerated withhunt. It seems that the social media type person thinks they can get satisfaction by using a mob mentality and while it may give them eventual customer satisfaction, they don't give a fiddlers about the effects on the business, its owners and other customers.

Social Media - Shoot first. Ask questions later.

    So he's innocent.

Animal hunting is an industry in Africa, there's even breeding farms for lion hunting.
The rarer the animal the more it costs.

Will the mob start a campaign against this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,544 ✭✭✭Samaris

An interesting thing to consider is whether you have ever agreed with the general idea of the mob's opinion, but argued against their more extreme ways or corrected misapprehensions or false notions it has.

It takes little to mock the mob, more to hold to your own point of view even to the detriment of the baying voices when you could easily just go along with the outrage. Does tend to mean that both sides will dislike you though!

Unfortunately we've a mixed package here.

There definately is something wrong with hate groups on the internet.

But fcuk the american dentist who thought I'm going to kill, some sentient, graceful, living thing, just because I can, not for food, not quick - but just to show everyone what a big lad I have.

FFS - what did he think was genna happen, he's an intelligent guy presumably?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 843 ✭✭✭QuinDixie

big game hunting of these animals for me is disgraceful.
I would not mind if the lion was killed for food, say the locals needed food, but some rich white American dentist shoots with an arrow. Cyril deserved a more noble death.
so I say let them hunt the dentist. payback is a bitch.

Mob rule on the internet is unfortunately the way things are going. Not much you can do to stop it. Both locally and globally. I can see a lot of suicides happening as a result of the mob mentality, with people being accused of rape or pedofilia or something with obvious societal consequences and the citizens of the Internet taking it at face value and next thing you know the guy or girl has their life ruined and kills themselves, when they were quite possibly innocent.

I'm a person who campaigned to help bring in the recent animal health and welfare act. The judge in the Liam Dowling case sent out a message that it doesn't really matter how you treat an animal regardless of how many laws are passed so yeah, this week I'm on the side of the angry internet mobs.

This didn't happen in Ireland. Campaign for harsher penalties if you feel so passionate about animals. Or just give up and say some mean things about the bad man that shot the lion. See which one helps the animals more.

...and this justifies going along with mob rule how? If you don't believe the penalties handed out are harsh enough, campaign for harsher ones! Being mean to one person on the Internet isn't going to do anything in the grand scheme of things.

You can save your indignation for someone else. I've never been mean to anyone on the internet. But nor do I have any sympathy for either that dentist or that scumbag in Dublin.

It could be a campaign against someone innocent who they mistake for a criminal. A campaign of threats to murder and/or rape the innocent victim. Leading to that person having to keep moving address or even commiting suicide.

    There are real life examples.

Internet mob rule is a scary thing. While I may not agree with a person's actions, if that action is legal, I believe they should still be able to undertake it without getting death threats or being spat at in the street, and their family members and friends should not be harassed purely for being in some way connected to them.

If you feel an action should be illegal, campaign to make it so. Boycott the business of the person involved, and tell them why. Tell your friends about your boycott-- in calm and reasoned terms, without screaming, emotive hyperbole. If you believe a person's actions were illegal, report them to the relevant authorities.

We are possibly reaching a point where a person's entire future can be destroyed by a single mistake, an unwise action, or even a case of mistaken identity or spite. I can't speak for anyone else, but I find that very alarming.

Check out the Justine Sacco story - all over an ironic tweet being interpreted literally.
That witch hunt against Three recently was another example of a willingness to misread things in order to form a mob. The sjw term is misused a lot but this is where it's very much applicable.

The World Wildlife Fund supports and auctions off big game hunting licenses in Zimbabwe.

This ithe problem with online hate mobs, it's populist hate venting which never really gets to the root of the problem. destroying this guy, however unpleasant he is, wont scratch the surface of the problem.

perhaps take the time to understand why the wwf has this policy and, if appropriate, what can be down to change it. Of course that would require a long term campaign and real analysis of why the policy of auctioning off these licenses exists. No fun for the hate mobs, shrill fools .

It's great to see such overwhelming compassion when the worst aspects of humanity are emphasised so much, but the witch-hunt is getting too much now - and it's unfair on his children. He's done a runner. No sympathy for him, but it's awful for his family. His kids don't deserve to be punished for what he did. It's bringing out an ugliness in people who know what this is doing to his kids - and kinda undermines their compassion for the lion.

There is also some really stupid sh-t on Facebook about what Cecil said from heaven according to an animal communicator or something. FFS. Getting just a tad hysterical.
