Mob Rule.

What can be done about these internet mobs who decide to start a campaign of abuse and destroy the lives of whoever happens to be in the news this week?
The Lion man(who did nothing illegal) has been attacked unmercifully. Just the other day some on here were advocating starting a campaign against a particular Judge.
Quite a few of the internet heroes who participate in these things I suspect have little understanding or real interest but are simply in it for the thrill and come next week will have completely forgotten their passionate crusade.

Is there a solution to the modern equivalent of townsfolk with pitchforks?

In the good old days, this may have been one or two people confronting the **** about his **** behaviour. Now it's one or two, times a million or so.

I don't approve of mob rule, or witch hunts on the internet. I think it's lazy as well as cruel. But that is the time we live in and the internet is very much ruled by mob thought.

In the same way that a feeling spreads over a mob that's willing and ready to be riled up, on the internet, I get the feeling that people feel more free to express the first emotion that comes to mind as regards a situation, and do not temper their words or think twice in how they phrase them as they might if speaking to a person face to face. Then another person reads it and allows themselves to be provoked into an emotional reaction too. Then a troll comes in and stirs **** up. Then someone who was borderline aboit it all reads the emotional backlash from two people and has an emotional reaction of "not fair!" and guns for the first two commentators. Then it snowballs. The original target of the chaos is not really considered to be a person, more like an abstract representation of whatever it is that's pissing people off. And just like with a mob, there is a lessened sense of responsibility of word and action and then things just get out of hand. Unfortunately, lives may be ruined before the mob finds something else to distract it.

I don't think there is a way to solve this, really. The human race will have to mature more first, and see the internet as a method of communication with other people, and not just a sounding board for the loudest voices.

You can't fart crooked in this social media dominated world, without a mob coming after you about the direction of the odour.

Take a small business for example. Regularly I see campaigns on FB drumming up all kinds of stories about how they were unhappy with the service of a particular business. It then turns into an exaggerated withhunt. It seems that the social media type person thinks they can get satisfaction by using a mob mentality and while it may give them eventual customer satisfaction, they don't give a fiddlers about the effects on the business, its owners and other customers.

Social Media - Shoot first. Ask questions later.

So he's innocent.

Animal hunting is an industry in Africa,there's even breeding farms for lion hunting.
The rarer the animal the more it costs.

An interesting thing to consider is whether you have ever agreed with the general idea of the mob's opinion, but argued against their more extreme ways or corrected misapprehensions or false notions it has.

It takes little to mock the mob, more to hold to your own point of view even to the detriment of the baying voices when you could easily just go along with the outrage. Does tend to mean that both sides will dislike you though!

big game hunting of these animals for me is disgraceful.
I would not mind if the lion was killed for food, say the locals needed food, but some rich white American dentist shoots with an arrow. Cyril deserved a more noble death.

Mob rule on the internet is unfortunately the way things are going. Not much you can do to stop it. Both locally and globally. I can see a lot of suicides happening as a result of the mob mentality, with people being accused of rape or pedofilia or something with obvious societal consequences and the citizens of the Internet taking it at face value and next thing you know the guy or girl has their life ruined and kills themselves, when they were quite possibly innocent.

I'm a person who campaigned to help bring in the recent animal health and welfare act. The judge in the Liam Dowling case sent out a message that it doesn't really matter how you treat an animal regardless of how many laws are passed so yeah, this week I'm on the side of the angry internet mobs.

This didn't happen in Ireland. Campaign for harsher penalties if you feel so passionate about animals. Or just give up and say some mean things about the bad man that shot the lion. See which one helps the animals more.
