Strange that Irish team still unannounced. Late fitness test for someone perhaps

Is that real? England have a second row starting at Out Half?

Those are some seriously heavy backs we have
Are they nearly at full adult size already?

Yup, he's a big b*stard. Had a very decent first season with Saints but unsurprisingly played the bulk of his rugby at 12.

Mallinder is a kicking centre/OH. Similar size to Peter Robb.

Well we have been in years gone by, but weve managed to unearth some freaks like Porter,Ryan and Deegan this year

I was just thinking you were very aggressive. In fairness there are another of huge lumps not there. Kenny, O'Donnell and Sam Arnold jump to mind straight away. That's hardly a complete fluke.

haha, well Arnold did come through the English system with Harlequins but I get your point. We always tend to have a few physical players but rarely a full pack that could compete up front with the likes of an English u20s

Can someone explain to me why England are such favourites for this?

Having beaten NZ and the 6N champions to get to the final and England earlier on in the year you'd think it should be Ireland, no?

The reasoning for England being favourites seems to be "they're scary and they're England"

This is their fourth final in a row I think, with two wins in three years.

That hardly makes sense for u-20's though where the teams are so different year-on-year.

You'd think that the most reliable info to judge on is current year results?

Don't get me wrong, England do look like a strong side - the strong expectation for them to win in most media and even the strong betting odds seems a bit unfounded though.

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,599 ✭✭✭matthew8

Well they are the home side and were very good in the semi final.

The England side that takes the field tomorrow is vastly different from the one that we played in the 6N. Only 7 players who started that game start tomorrow.

England often make huge changes to their 23 between the tournaments with a number of players often being left with their clubs. Harry Mallinder, for example, started two Aviva Premiership games the week we faced them in the 6N.

In fact, of the 23 that we played then, 9 of them didn't even make the squad for this tournament.

Is the U20s 6 Nations in its current form really worthwhile when there's a JWC every year?

  • Registered Users Posts: 4,214 ✭✭✭ClanofLams

Yeah sure why not? It's good development for young players. JWC is only 5 games.

Georgia misses out though. Bit unfair on them, and any other fringe team who only gets half the matches of the 6N matches.

What channels other than TnaG are covering this tonight? Would enjoy it a lot more with commentary I can understand.

Argentina giving SA a run for their money (third place playoff) which gives me a lot of hope for the game later

Not sure what the score was when you posted that but they're giving them a bit of a pasting now.

    44-19.

While a big part of England's win was the quick start, SA must have lost 5/6 of their own line outs which is criminal.

They were 19-7 down, bodes well for Ireland I suppose.

Worth a couple of point no doubt, not enough to make them favourites.

They were good enough to make use of a first half where SA were doing their best to shoot themselves in the foot. They were outscored in the second.

That's a fair reason for not basing judgement on 6N results. But it doesn't give you any real info to judge current ability. You could conclude that it should be better, but not by how much. It also ignores that Ireland have improved hugely since the 6N.

If you compare results from the competition (not fool-proof, but the best indicator we have), you'd see that England beat a SA in the semis by less than Ireland beat the team that beat them in the group stages. ie. that Ireland had a better semi-final result than England.

FWIW, I just don't see the evidence for England to have a heavy favourites tag. Personally I'd put Ireland at slight favourites but would find even or England at slight favourites understandable.

I did ask this question originally to see if there was anything I was missing...but from what I'm seeing, I'm not? It's just hype?
