Tried the battered soy and chilli calamari from the freezer in Aldi, really tasty as a treat!

Visible in the bin beside my lovely assistant.

Normally we'd remove such a large photo from a quote, but I'm just happy to have another look at Dónal's lovely assistant :)

"Cullen's" Cloudy Lemon Irish Cider is very nice, even at 1.49 a can.

what are the frozen lamb shanks like does anyone know. I am a BIG fan of lamb shanks but worried serving up Sunday lunch with something I've never tried before.

If it's the frozen ones with 2 in a box their very good. The gravy/sauce is really nice.

They can be very fatty, or have very little fat. That turned me off them a little. If you get a nice one, their as nice as you'd get in a half decent restaurant. Get a fatty one and and you'll end up hungry.

The wife had orgasms over a spice bag mix they had. I bunged the whole lot into an acti-fry and let it off for an hour.

First they came for the socialists...

Had a Thai chicken soup for lunch today. Got it last night doin a bit of hungry shopping. I was meant to get 3 bottles of milk! Anyway it was really nice. Very thick and tasty. Much better than I was expecting.

This might be an odd one but I bought the Aldi mousturising face wash recently, probably didn't look at the label when I bought it. I'm a tight arse and I buy my shower gel, shampoo, and face wash (my entire grooming kit apart from shavers) in the budget supermarkets. My wife, who spends a small fortune on creams etc asked me what I'm using as my skin has gotten much better.

    Two new products I've noticed recently have been ;

Atlantic wheaten/brown soda bread, lovely just like homemade wheaten bread, goes great with some ham and cheese.

Gourmet Sausage Rolls, these are absolutely delicious, even though I made the mistake of giving them to my kids as an after school snack (they wouldn't be appreciated by younger generation tbh) the meat in these are delicious, a world away from the ones you'd tend to see in a garage forecourt.

Are the sausage rolls fresh or freezer?

We had the ‘Irish butcher’ pork sausages yesterday, very tasty and fairly high meat content. Even my very fussy 6 year old ate them and he usually won’t stir from Denny’s.

    How does it taste?

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

Why don't you buy their 3 blade disposable or 5 blade cartridge razors? I find both perform very well and I'm a hairy git!

I’ve tried several packs of the three blade, they won’t cut hair, even from new. Surprised how bad they were.

Fresh, there's a choice of (from memory) black pudding and jalapeno relish, or the ones I bought which were pork and roasted red peppers.

I saw them but forgot to pick them up.
Seem pricey enough at just over 3 euro for 2.
I guess they are 'gourmet' and in fairness they do seem big.

Aldi have unfortunately changed the recipe of their rice range.

Old stuff was very nice - as good as Uncle Ben's.

New stuff hasn't got a great texture and is clumpy.

Won't be buying any more - rather pay the Uncle Ben's premium.

Aldi should have just put the price up a few cents rather than selling own brand stuff that's just at the standard of Tesco's / Dunnes own brand range.

New on left - Old on right

Any of the 3 ply stuff does the job.
The shea butter one smells nice! :p
    I think it's around 3 quid for 9 rolls?

I got some 'eco' rolls in lidl a while ago and it was like sandpaper.

Not when I'm finished with them.

If you live in one of the bigger cities- why don’t you buy rice from an Indian grocery shop, will be cheaper and definitely better

60 cents and 2mins in the microwave is handier for the odd times I eat rice.

I thought it was me and the way I was cooking it, typical I blamed myself rather than the rice!!
    Glad you posted this.

Is it just that rice or is it all the rices ?
We use the purple basmati one

  • Registered Users Posts: 5,181 ✭✭✭Lady Haywire

As above I rarely eat rice but always buy the random Tilda pouches in the Aldi 'anything' aisle. Got a Brazilian Samba (something like that) a few weeks ago & it was lovely last night.

I also got the Long Grain rice that you boil and it was clumpy and mushy.
    The classic Basmati was fine.

Assume people are washing their rice? Their should be little or no starch in the water before you boil it.

Crucials garlic & herb is back.

The 3 types of brioche buns seem to be gone, thought they were sold out but could see no space for them, these are the burger, seeded burger and hot dog buns.

There are seeded brioche buns but they are 80g and very bready, nothing at all like the others, they are also not long life like the others.
