    SCAM.

You can't win a draw that you never entered!
Also general rule of thumb is if you have to ask then you already know the answer ;)

I think you know the answer to this already!

    100% a scam

    Similar story here: http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5108721

Beaten to the punch by doing some research on it ;-)

I understand it's a scam, I often see them on facebook for iphones and aldi. What is the actual scam? On facebook they ask people to like and share but what does it do for the scammers. how do they make money from this.

Clicking 'like' on FB exposes the scam to all your friends and expands the network of potential victims. And tells your friends that you'd click on anything late at night!

The victim thinks they have won and supplies details of their bank or credit card a/c to pay an 'administration' fee, same as the Spanish lottery and other scams.

It's probably like the e-mail scams, all it takes is 1 in a 1,000 or even 10,000 to fall for it. Asking people to click 'like' costs nothing and is much cheaper than shoving leaflets about fake charity clothes collections through letterboxes!

Plus 1 on this .... Text at 6am this morning from 087 603809758.

"Big Action Offer introduced by Viber" ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 stanistheman

Just found this when searching for Viber Promo, glad to see people are on here quickly to let others know. My Dad just showed me his phone and wanted to know what this was. It's presented very well, but I told him that I would have to check that it's a scam. Good to know I was right to trust my suspicions!

Seems a different number is being used each time, the number I have is +387603809661.

"A stranger told me I won a competition I never entered........."

How can people be smart enough to get through a full registration on Boards.ie and not be smart enough to recognise a ridiculous scam when they see it?

This is the number that was used for me

I just got it also, it is meant to look like it came from an Irish number but if you look at the number of digits it clearly doesn't. If you get it just ignore!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭FobleAsNuck

most likely if you're asking if something is a scam it usually is. your subconscious already know that and it's trying to tell you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1 Kcastle

    Number used on mine was 00353 87 603 806 548

(At first looks like Irish mobile but the number of digits is wrong for an Irish phone)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,583 ✭✭✭marcbrophy

Take a closer look at the numbers.
They are not 0035387 or +35387
    They are 00387 or +387
The country code for Bosnia / Herzegovina
Probably picked on purpose as at first glance looks like an Irish mobile :)

He could have inadvertently signed up for a premium text service so he might start getting horoscope readings or sports results for which they will extract large amounts of money from his account or rapidly deplete his PAYG balance.

Spoke to the lad today, he hasn't had credit since he responded to the message. He has been getting messages that say he has received a reverse charge message and will be able to be opened when he tops up. The minute he tops up all his credit will be gone.

Get a parent to call the telco (3, meteor, vodafone) and say that the messages are unwarranted and that any pending ones should be cancelled and blocked from the account before they'll top up again.

Explain to them that it's an anti fraud request and you want the charges dissolved.

    That should help :)
