Is everyone selling there wool or holding it till hopefully price improves surely can't get worse? Sheds are all empty so no big deal till store it for awhile.

I'm going to hold onto mine for the moment. Not taken by up much space. Wouldn't like it hanging around the sheds at winter though. I'd image it's a magnet for rats nesting.

Paid 2 euro per sheep here this year and last....shearer had handier time as I had all lambs separated out of ewes beforehand and had ewes in for the night beforehand so they were emptied out for him.He had a ten year old son with him as 'help' on the day, asked for 25 euro for him on top of cost of shearing. There about 4 hours in total...thought it was a bit 'Irish' looking for money on top for the child who didn't really do anything.....but gave it.

    What do other people pay?

    2 euro as well.

2 lads, both of em handy enough, altho one lad cut a hogget on her lower leg this year, and tis nasty enough. It went deeper than I thought, she'll come good, but she is lame enough now with it... These things happen though I suppose...

The cheek of him!! You were worse to pay it!! If he helped bagging wool or tidying up a bit you'd slip him a few quid anyway but to ask for it was cheeky!

Changed my shearers this year as fella that usually did them wasn't the tidiest and nicked a couple last year, whilst it was only the ewes i didn't mind too much about the track lines. This year as its only hoggets for sale in August i wanted them clipped well and the two boys did a fine job on them.
However two hoggets jumped the hurdles and caught their legs in the gap at the top of the hurdles and one broke her leg and I've splinted her but the other has a fair bit of swelling despite a couple of injections with betamox and metacam. Vet couldn't tell if she'd torn tendons or broke the fibula due to the swelling so i'll have to keep an eye on her.

Took the wool on wednesday night, got 50p/kg for it and had two bales from last autumn when i sheared the ewe lambs. They only gave me 15p/kg for it as they said the Chinese don't like wool that has come from sheep that had been coloured or dyed before sale. Didn't realise the chinese were so fussy .

Most people would give it anyway and if he wanted to be paid for the child he should have included it in his price per sheep. 40 or 50 cents per sheep would cover it but might make him sound dear.
I wonder how much of the €25 went directly to the child too as pocket money as opposed to feeding and clothing the child.

I'd say they'll take that dyed wool especially if they get it half or a third off.

Put it this if I had had more time to think about it I might have challenged him on it but weather was dodgy last while and he came when I asked which means a lot.Would have thrown the young lad a few euro regardless as a gesture but he didn't do much at all.

Do other people here have shearers that bring 'help' with them?.....that you end up paying for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭ganmo

i think shearers brought help here once and that was an actual wool handler no idea if they were paid separate. The same shearer brought his chap a few times and he def didn't get anything extra but he's shearing in his own right now

If I'm shearing for some one it's €2 per sheep.. that's 2 shearing 1 man coping... or €1.50 if farmer copes and bags wool.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,748 ✭✭✭ganmo

    Coping?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,041 ✭✭✭Lambman

That sounds fair enough Lambman...does your man 'coping' bag the wool?

He hardly has time to tramp it down in bag has he?

After about 30 sheep a second shearer arrived to help him,he employs a few different fellas depending on their availability,to be fair they are all good clippers.

How's it dear it's an extra €20 per 100 sheep... try paying some one till separate all the lambs from 100 ewes catch them and cope them for shearing then pack the wool.... when he's finished hand him the €20 see what he says.!

€2.20 it's dear when wool is 60c!! €2 here for 2 very good men with a trailer. The two of them shore 850 in 2days before lambing. Just keep sheep to them and pack the wool. I thought the days of catching sheep for them were gone and all shearers these days had a trailer. I remember doing it when I was 15 for my uncle and another man who were contract shearing. Everyone in our area had big cheviots or big suffolks and usually the pen was massive. I got 20p each sheep from the uncle and made good money but by god I worked for it. :-)

As with everything with sheep Stan - it's a numbers game...

Shearers here just turn up with the shears and stand... you catch and turn the ewes for em...
We'd only had 60 this year for shearing, but it would usually be around that... most of their clients would be the same, or smaller... they often say it takes em longer in some places to setup and take the stands down than it does to shear...

So it would hardly be worth these lads while having a trailer, when the farmer is the one catching the ewes anyways - although it would make the job easier on the lad catching... ;)

And yes, 60 ewes is hobby numbers.. but I guess even hobby farmers need to have their sheep shorn too... ;)

Hardly the shearers fault wool fell badly in price did u give €3 per ewe years ago when wool was €1:50? It works both ways!

As Adam 14 said lambs are already separated, wool is packed for shearer etc, for all we know Adam 14 is already paying someone to give him a hand as there's work taking lambs out of 250 ewes!We are all entitled to our opinion ....to me 2:20 per sheep just for clipping is dear.
