Id say starting off if you do ten an hour ya would be doing well, i can do 250 a day which includes picking out the culls whilst im doing it and weaning lambs now but im at it since i was 16, im 26 now, ten years at it youll manage 40 sheep with a hand type heiniger shears, no point buying a proper machine, youll see sense and get a contractor in next year!

Have a lister nexus here with 3 speed settings. What speed do ye recommend using? 2800, 3200 and 3500rpm. My gut is telling me fastest speed. Father has a much older machine but seems to cut faster!

depends on how fast u shear if you are 10-20 an hour set slower speed ur combs and cutters will wear less.

Well the machine was set to slowest speed as it turns out. Changed it to medium and it's like a different animal! I wouldn't be great yet but would manage 25-30 an hour. Got a few tips of an excellent contract shearer and it's made a huge difference in terms of my technique.

Know a man that used to shear that before morning milking, but he got a better paying job with IFA.

€500 for a mornings work wouldn’t be bad going. If the conts in the ifa are getting that for doing nothing then we should all look into it :-)

I was looking at the hand held battery shearers at tullamore, in my opinion the combs and cutters were set wrong on them for shearing wool.
someone was on here getting hassle trying to shear sheep with one, maybe that's the reason. I would always set the comb with a good lead on the cutter, these had the comb pushed back as far as it'd go
    Any shearer like to comment

Comb set back to far will only chaw the wool. I always have cutter sitting back about 3mm from first bevel on tip of comb and make sure cutter is overlapping the outer tooth on both sides

I bought a battery one from Connacht Agri, just got it delivered there now, I need it for dagging for this clean lamb policy, lambs have got dirty since the grass started to grow.
Going to put my conventional shearing machine in Donedeal later on.

If the sheep's well ready hold the comb well up if not hold it down less chance off nicking them....
